Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 — Lantern Light and Quiet Approval

Date: Mid-Winter, New Year Festival — Taishō

Age: Akira — 7

Location: Azabu District

Combat Strength: ★★☆☆☆ (Stable; recovery and balance prioritized)

---

Snow had fallen the night before.

By morning, Azabu was white and hushed, rooftops capped in frost, footsteps crunching softly along the streets. The air felt clean—sharp enough to wake even the sleepiest hearts.

Akira arrived at the clinic early, as usual.

He boiled water, laid out clean cloths, checked the charcoal fire. The familiar rhythm settled him. Winter illness still lingered, but the worst had passed. Fewer coughing fits. Fewer frantic knocks.

The doctor watched him work for a long moment before speaking.

"You know," he said, washing his hands, "you move like you belong here."

Akira paused, then bowed. "I'm still learning."

The doctor snorted. "Everyone worth trusting is."

He reached into a drawer and handed Akira a small, worn cord—nothing fancy. Just a simple token used by helpers to move freely in and out of the clinic.

"You're not a doctor," the man said plainly. "And you won't act like one."

"Yes," Akira replied immediately.

"But," the doctor continued, tying the cord around Akira's wrist, "you are my helper. Officially."

Akira looked down at the cord.

It wasn't power.

It was responsibility.

"…Thank you," he said quietly.

The doctor nodded once. "Go enjoy the festival today. You've earned it."

Akira blinked. "You noticed?"

The doctor smiled faintly. "Go."

The New Year Festival transformed Azabu.

Lanterns lined the streets, glowing gold and red against the snow. Stalls sold warm dumplings, sweet beans, grilled fish. Bells rang from the shrine, laughter echoing between houses.

Akira stood at the edge of it all, momentarily unsure.

Then—

"Akira!"

Mitsuri waved enthusiastically, bundled in bright layers, cheeks pink from the cold. She ran up, nearly slipping, then steadied herself with a laugh.

"You came!"

He smiled. "I was told to."

She beamed. "Good!"

They walked together, slow and unhurried. Mitsuri talked—about food she wanted to try, games she wanted to play, resolutions she didn't quite understand yet.

Akira listened.

When they reached a ring-toss stall, Mitsuri tugged his sleeve. "Let's try!"

Akira eyed the prizes—small charms, wooden toys.

"I'm not good at games," he said honestly.

"That's okay!" she said. "I am!"

She tossed. Missed. Laughed.

Akira stepped up.

> "Trajectory analysis available. Wind negligible. Probability of success: 87% if adjusted."

"…Help me a little," he thought.

> "Acknowledged. Minimal assistance engaged."

He tossed gently.

Ring landed clean.

Mitsuri gasped. "You did it!"

He tried again.

Another win.

And another.

Soon Mitsuri was laughing so hard she had to hold her stomach.

"That's amazing!" she said. "You're secretly good at everything!"

Akira shook his head. "Just… observant."

They shared dumplings, hands warming around the paper wrappers. Mitsuri hummed happily, snowflakes catching in her hair.

At the shrine, they rang the bell together—Akira quieter, Mitsuri enthusiastic.

"What did you wish for?" she asked.

He thought for a moment. "To keep learning."

She smiled softly. "That sounds like you."

She didn't ask more.

Fireworks cracked faintly in the distance—small, brief bursts of color against the winter sky. Mitsuri watched them with wide eyes.

Akira watched her.

> "Emotional state: Calm. Contentment detected."

Good, he thought.

---

Later, as lanterns dimmed and people drifted home, Akira walked back through the snow alone, prize charm tucked safely in his pocket.

The clinic cord rested warm against his wrist.

The festival laughter still echoed faintly in his ears.

Tomorrow, training would resume. Study would continue. Winter would still be cold.

But tonight—

Tonight was light.

Akira looked up at the lanterns swaying gently in the wind.

And for once, he didn't feel like he had to hurry.
