Chapter 40 - Lower Rank One

On the Roof of the Train

The wind howled.

The train tore through the night, steam mixed with coal smoke billowing like gray dragons into the sky.

"Up there!"

Tanjiro flipped nimbly onto the roof, Nichirin Blade clenched tight. His gaze locked forward.

"That nauseating stench—it's coming from the engine!"

Whoosh!

A figure moved even faster than him.

Inosuke landed lightly ahead of Tanjiro like a great cat, graceful despite the gale. His haori snapped violently in the wind as he flicked his iron fan open, blocking the coal ash blasting toward his face.

"Hey, Gonpachiro,"

Inosuke said, hiding behind the fan as he looked down at the iron roof in disgust.

"This place is filthy. All coal dust. When we're done, I'm billing the conductor for dry cleaning."

Just then—

"Good night…"

A soft, syrupy, sickly-sweet voice drifted from the front of the train.

Lower Rank One · Enmu.

He stood at the very edge of the engine, arms spread wide, backlit by moonlight as if embracing the rushing night wind.

"What a lovely night," he sighed.

"Perfect for having a beautiful dream…"

He turned around. The eyes engraved with the mark of One curved into a smile as they fixed on the two boys.

"Especially you," Enmu said, gazing at Inosuke with clear interest.

"The one dressed so beautifully… yet whose dreams are filled with nothing but money."

He licked his lips, savoring the memory.

"Such a fascinating dream. Your desire for wealth is purer than a demon's hunger for humans. Why wake up at all? Wouldn't it be better to keep dreaming?"

"Shut up, inferior lifeform."

Inosuke snapped his fan shut. Frost gathered in his emerald eyes.

"You've got some nerve saying that."

He pointed straight at Enmu's nose, teeth clenched.

"You were the one who ordered that idiot woman to burn down my treasury just now, weren't you?!"

"One billion gold koban!"

"Do you have any idea how much that is?!"

"Do you know how many Hashira I'd have to sell to earn that back?!"

Enmu froze.

"…Eh?"

That's what you're angry about? Shouldn't a normal person be worried about their companions first?

"Since you're admitting it,"

Inosuke slowly drew his twin blades.

The serrated edges shimmered under the moonlight, glowing with icy blue and blood-red brilliance.

"Then you'll pay with your life."

"I'll skin you, dig out those eyeballs of yours—whatever blood demon art junk they are—

they should fetch a decent price."

"Heehee…"

Enmu covered his mouth as he laughed. The mouth in the palm of his hand split open as well, emitting a skin-crawling echo.

"How crude. If you dislike pleasant dreams so much…"

"Then have a nightmare."

Blood Demon Art: Forced Sleep · Eyes!

The mouth on Enmu's hand opened wide. An invisible wave surged out, engulfing both boys.

Meet his gaze—and fall asleep instantly.

"Ugh!"

Tanjiro staggered, his eyes glazing over.

In his dream, his family surrounded him, shouting accusations.

"Why were you the only one who survived?!"

"I'm sorry!"

In the dream, Tanjiro raised his blade and slit his own throat without hesitation.

"Wake up!"

Slash!

In reality, Tanjiro's eyes flew open. He gasped for air.

"Inosuke! Don't look at his eyes—that's his Blood Demon Art!"

But Inosuke wasn't struggling.

In fact… he looked irritated.

"Snrrrk…"

Standing upright, Inosuke fell asleep on the spot—

a snot bubble inflating lazily from his nose.

Inosuke's Dream

A ruined, drafty temple.

The once-glorious Eternal Paradise Cult had gone bankrupt.

Doma wore tattered rags, begging on the street.

"Please… spare some change… my son needs a steamed bun…"

Kotoha, dressed in patched clothing, sewed garments for others to earn a few coins.

And Inosuke himself held a cracked bowl containing half a moldy corn bun.

"Young Master, we're broke! The treasury is empty!"

Butler Muzan wailed beside him.

"OUTRAGEOUS!!!"

Dream-Inosuke exploded with rage, kicking the temple apart.

"I'm the young master of the Eternal Paradise Cult! How could I go bankrupt?!

This is fake! This is a scam!!"

"WAKE UP!!!"

Reality

Pop!

The snot bubble burst.

Inosuke's eyes snapped open, veins bulging on his forehead, bloodshot with fury.

He had awakened—from poverty.

"You bastard!"

He glared at Enmu with such hatred that even a Lower Rank One felt a chill.

"You actually dared to make me dream that!"

"Making our family of three beg on the streets?!

That's the greatest insult to my household!"

"DIE, YOU POOR TRASH!"

Inosuke stomped forward, agility surging.

Ice Breathing · Second Form · Shattered Frost Fangs!

His twin blades became a storm—wild, unrestrained, driven by pure instinct and rage.

Enmu recoiled in shock, retreating rapidly.

Impossible!

He woke up without killing himself?!

What kind of mind structure does this kid have?!

Is money his only weakness?!

"Then so be it!"

Enmu activated his art again.

"Sleep! Sleep! This time, dream of all your money turning into stone!"

"I won't look!"

Inosuke suddenly shut his eyes.

He kept swinging—eyes completely closed.

"Hahaha! Closing your eyes won't help!"

Enmu sneered. "You can't see me—so you can't hit me!"

"Who says I can't?"

Inosuke grinned mockingly, eyes shut tight.

The hairs on his body stood on end. Every ripple of air, every vibration, painted a clear image on his skin.

Omnidirectional radar.

"Your heartbeat is too loud!"

"Your blood stinks!"

"And that disgusting gaze of yours—

even with my eyes closed, it feels like snot stuck on my face!"

"There!"

Still blind, Inosuke slashed to the right.

RIIIP!

The serrated blade bit deep into Enmu's neck.

Though Enmu barely managed to block with his tendrils, the ice-infused edge still tore away half his shoulder.

"AAAH!"

Enmu screamed and stumbled back.

"Is this kid a monster?! Fighting without eyes?!"

"Gonpachiro! Now!"

Inosuke roared.

"Cut his neck!"

"Yes!"

Tanjiro seized the opening.

Water Breathing · Tenth Form · Constant Flux!

A roaring water dragon surged forth, crashing toward Enmu's neck.

Slash!

Enmu's head flew off and rolled across the roof.

"…We won?"

Tanjiro froze.

"That was… easy?"

"No."

Inosuke frowned, eyes still closed.

"The feeling was wrong."

"No crunchy sound of bone snapping.

It felt like cutting rotten mud."

Sure enough—

Enmu's severed head did not disintegrate.

Instead, it laughed.

"Hehehe… very impressive."

"Unfortunately—I'm no longer here."

RUMBLE—!

The entire train shook violently.

Countless dark-red masses of flesh burst from the metal walls, crawling across the roof like blood vessels.

Eyes.

Eyes opened everywhere, lining the train's surface, staring at them.

"This train has become my body,"

Enmu's voice echoed from all directions, merging with the roar of steel.

"The two hundred passengers aboard are nothing but nutrients."

"How many do you think you can protect?"

"Tch."

Inosuke opened his eyes, staring down at the writhing flesh with disgust.

"Disgusting."

"A perfectly good iron train—

you turned it into pig offal."

He looked at Tanjiro.

"Gonpachiro, situation's changed."

"This freak fused with the train. Which means—"

He tapped the eye-covered roof with his iron fan.

"This train is alive now."

"T-then what do we do?!"

Tanjiro panicked.

"If the whole train is the demon, where's its neck?!"

"Idiot."

Inosuke grinned shrewdly.

"If it's alive, then it's simple."

"All living things feel pain.

All living things fear cold."

He drew a deep breath. His Ice Spirit Physique surged to life.

The temperature plummeted. Moisture in the air crystallized into frost.

"Listen, Gonpachiro."

"You go find the neck."

"I'll go the other way—"

Inosuke plunged both serrated blades into the fleshy roof.

"And cool this train down a bit."

"I'm freezing this whole thing into a popsicle!"

"Let's see how it digests passengers then!"

Total Concentration · Ice Breathing · Third Form

Avalanche Saw Fangs · Absolute Zero!

A terrifying wave of cold surged through the Nichirin Blades, flooding into the train's vein-like walls.

The writhing red flesh instantly frosted over, movements slowing, stiffening.

"AAAAH! So cold! So cold!"

The entire train let out a wail.

Inosuke stood atop the roof like a tyrant.

"Freeze, you stinking piece of shit!"

"On my turf, without my permission—

NO ONE gets to eat people!"

Inside the Carriages

Tendrils that had been reaching for passengers froze solid midair.

Nezuko, who had been about to save people, blinked and poked one.

Crack.

It shattered into pieces.

"…Hm?"

She tilted her head.

She didn't know what was happening—but it felt…

Amazing.
