Chapter 10 - A DREAM

MALEDICTION (3)

The tarvun on top of the dungeon on the hill, it would appear as though the knights were having the time of their lives. But then again I suppose its always like this. Drinking every damn day of the week, something they would never get tired of. The waitress came up to one them. A black queen, as many of the men in the tarvan called her.

"What can I get you boys." Her English was a bit rough around the endges. Her Kiswahili accent would slip out most of the time, but nothing that would turn off a group of men hungry for something exciting that night.

"Uh yesh, I would want a pair of watermelons If that's possible."

"Watermelons?" She raised an eyebrow, "We don't really serve those here."

The man got up from his chair and forcefully grabbed onto the woman's chest, fondling it softly.

"I think these will do just fine."

"YAAA!" The woman screamed, puliing herself away from the man.

"Cume nowe woooman, giiive mee sooommething!" He stumbled over his words, not only that, but he also stumbled over the wooden tables knocking his over.

The man who sat next to him sighed regretfully, "Please forgive him, he's too drunk. You best run off, send one of your male waiters instead."

The woman nodded and said nothing more, she then hurriedly returned to the kitchen. The knight helped his friend up.

"Hey wooooman!" He shouted, "Guet, byak heere."

The woman ignored the cries of the man, locking the door into the kitchen.

 "Everything ok Purity?"

She nodded, "Just another man I suppose." She adjusted her clothes. She had worn something that brought a lot more attention on her than she had intended. Her dress was short up to the knees and its neck sagged revealing her cleavage.

"Well, just try and be careful, these men will scar you for life if you aren't." The chef in charge of brewing told her.

 "Yessir."

"Take a break for now, Jacob will take your shift."

"No, no its fine I can do another."

The manager raised an eyebrow, "Huh? Fine, just make it snappy, we've got a lot of 'em coming in today."

Purity nodded. She went deeper into the back room, to the cellar where they stored the already made booze.

'Phew, I almost lost my shift.'

Purity worked on commission, the more customers she served the more shillings she would earn. Losing a shift especially to her competition would be nothing less than outrageous.

"Be confident." She whispered to herself.

Some of the other waitresses were down here as well.

"50,000 shillings!" One of them squeled, "Imagine, alinipea tu hivyo. (Can you imagine he gave it to me just like that?)"

"Ah, Walai! Unadanganya haiwezekani(Ah, really, your lying its not possible)" Another giggled, "For free?"

"Fine, you've caught me." She leaned in a bit, "I might have given him a taste, just a bit." She winked.

 "A bit?"

"Maybe a lot more, haijalishi. Imangin hiyo pesa yote! (Maybe a lot more but it doesn't matter, imagine all that money.)" She squealed.

Purity didn't glance back, she kept her eyes on the prize. Loading the booze into a crate.

'How do they do it?' She wondered, 'Just give out their body like its nothing?'

She was receiving less and less customers per day, reason was because most of the weren't into holy girls. They said she dressed like she was from the church, something that didn't sit right with them. She might as well have joined, her mother was very strict with her and what she was to do, especially in these troubling times.

"Keep yourself pure, we might be able to get a statesman to marry you." She insisted.

Tonight she had risked herself a bit, she just needed more customers to call on her as a waitress. It didn't really matter if they ordered or not, all that mattered was that the manager saw she was attracting attention.

"Purity, bestie!" A girl jumped onto he back as she was loading the crates.

"Please get off!" Purity gasped, "I can't breath if your on top."

"Oh, pole didn't mean to (Oh, sorry, didn't mean to.)" The girl got off, she was the one talking to the others about her rousing success at seducing a knight.

"Oh my, it seems you've gotten dressed a little more toningt, huh?"

Feeling a bit shameful she tried to cover up her chest, "Not much." He voice cracked.

"Your nervous." The girl told her, "Tell you what."

Wrapping her arms around Purity's neck the woman whispered, "I'll take the next shift, and I'll pay you back with the extra commission."

 "What, you can't, its just…"

"I'm used to it, no need to worry." The woman grabbed the crates, "I'll make double as much money tonight than ever."

The woman didn't even give Purity time to argue, she opened the door and left.

 'That's not… what I meant.'

Purity sighed, her friend was too willing, too power hungry. Too ready to give up the one thing in this world no man had, the purity of a woman's body.

Purity didn't know if it was true, but it is said that if and when a woman losses her virginity she wakes up from a dream. A dream that had closed her eyes, not allowing her to see the true side of things in this world. When she wakes up, she begins to see things clearly.

A dream, a deep slumber. Her grandmother told her that that saying didn't apply only to a woman's virginity, but rather herself and her being.

When a woman losses her purity, the one thing that men look for, she wakes up to the cruel reality that she might never find a man worthy of her. Drunk husbands that'll beat you silly the next time they come home, gamblers who will sell the single piece of land you own in this village.

Her father was probably like that, her mother never talked about him, nor did she ever mention him in the house.

 AHHHHH!

The girls in the other room heard screaming coming from the tavarn.

 "What's going on up there?"

Purity shook her head, "Nancy." She whispered under her breath, she forgot what she was thinking about and rushed to the other room. In the distance they could hear clashing of steel blades, feet crushing the wooden boards beneath them.

 It was like a warzone.

Glass shattered, as men ran to their death, others tried to escape only to be met with the same fate.

"What's happening!" Purity rushed into the tavarn to find it a wreck, tables and chairs on the floor, beer glasses broken and windows shattered.

 "Nancy?"

The cooks stood in disgust as Purity raced over to Nancy who was covered in blood and unconscious. "Nancy! Nancy please talk to me!" Tears ran down her cheeks as she held her friend close.

All the while beside her were the dead bodies of all the knights in the tarvan, not one of them was able to escape alive.
