As Peter Parker was undergoing his mysterious metamorphosis on the other side of town, he wasn't the only teenager in New York whose life was about to be irrevocably reshaped.
In Forest Hills, Queens—just a few blocks away from the Parker residence—Mary Jane Watson sat cross-legged on her bed.
Ever since her parents died in a tragic car crash when she was a little girl, her Aunt Anna had taken full responsibility for raising her.
Aunt Anna provided a warm, loving home, but adolescent life came with its own set of chaotic demands that required a very specific kind of support structure—the kind only high school girlfriends could provide.
At that exact moment, the red-headed beauty was deeply engrossed in a group call on her phone with Gwen, Sam, and Liz.
While their entire social circle regularly hung out together, the dynamics had naturally fractured into two distinct sub-factions: the boys' group chat and the girls' group chat.
While the boys were busy clogging their server with loud tantrums, absurd video game debates, and reckless dare video clips, the girls used their sanctuary to share actual stories, gossip, and life updates.
Today, however, the conversation had veered away from mundane schoolwork and drifted straight into far more private territory. Specifically, the spotlight had landed directly on Sam and Danny.
"Come on, Sam, spill the juice," Liz's voice giggled through the speaker, dripping with impish glee. "We've been asking for ten minutes. How far have you and Fenton actually gone?"
On the other end of the line, Sam Manson—usually the picture of cynical goth stoicism—went completely silent, her face burning bright red.
It didn't take a genius to decipher what that silence meant. The relationship had not entered the forbidden zone—or even the buffer zone, for that matter.
"Wait, seriously?" Liz gasped dramatic horror. "Sam, that is brutal! How could you do that to poor Danny? No kisses? No romantic smooches? Not even getting a little touchy-feely?"
"We are taking things at a comfortable pace!" Sam snapped back defensively, her voice cracking slightly. "Unlike some people, I don't treat dating like a high-speed obstacle course!"
"A comfortable pace?" Liz snorted. "At this rate, you two will hold hands by the time you receive your pensions! You're keeping the guy on ice!"
"Oh, please, Liz," Sam retorted sharply. "You've been fumbling around Harry Osborn for six months, sending mixed signals like a broken traffic light! You haven't made a single real move either!"
"Hey! Harry is complicated, okay? He requires delicate navigation!" Liz yelled.
Gwen Stacy's tired sigh echoed through the phone speakers, followed by a theatrical roll of her eyes that everyone could practically feel through the cellular signals. "You two are absolutely shameless," Gwen muttered, rubbing her temples. "Must every conversation devolve into a competitive analysis of our romantic progress?"
Her interjection did absolutely nothing to curb the chaos. Sam and Liz immediately launched into a full-blown catfight over the call.
The bickering escalated so rapidly into absurd vulgarity that Liz threw her hands up and blurted, "Face it, Manson! You're basically a cuckquean in training! You're just waiting around for some other girl to walk into Danny's life and swoop him up before you even figure out how to hug him properly!"
"I am not a cuckquean you bitch!" Sam screeched.
Seeing that the call was about to disintegrate into utter anarchy, MJ decided to step in as the voice of reason.
"Alright, alright, tone it down, ladies!" MJ laughed, using her trademark mediator tone. "Liz, stop trying to turn Sam's love life into a soap opera. Sam, take a deep breath before you blow a fuse."
After a few grudging huffs and puffs, both parties finally settled down.
"Fine," Liz mumbled, before her eyes lit up with renewed mischief. "So, MJ... how are you doing over there?"
MJ blinked, raising an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh, don't play innocent with me, Watson," Liz chuckled impishly. "Everyone knows you have a massive crush on Peter."
A sudden flush of warmth spread across MJ's cheeks, turning the redhead as crimson as her hair. "I—it's not like that!"
"Oh, please, it totally is," Sam chimed in, eager to shift the target away from herself. "And Peter practically trips over his own feet every time you walk into the room. He's completely smitten with you. Honestly, what kind of boring, slow-burn rom-com anime setting is this whole dynamic?"
"Hey!" Liz immediately turned back on Sam. "Look who's talking about slow burns! You're the queen of the turtle race, Manson!"
"Do not start with me again, Allan!" Sam fired back, and within seconds, their chaotic catfight flared back up in full force.
MJ took advantage of the distraction to gather her composure and cool down her blushing cheeks. Trying to pivot the conversation entirely, she waited for a split-second pause in the shouting match and asked, "What about you, Gwen? Is there anyone you like?"
The line instantly went dead silent. Both Sam and Liz immediately paused their squabbling, hanging on the phone in eager anticipation for the blonde genius's answer.
Gwen stayed quiet for a long moment. "Honestly?" she finally said, her tone unusually thoughtful. "I don't know. Or, to be more specific... I don't really have an answer yet."
Liz let out a long, dramatic sigh of disappointment. "Poor girl," Liz lamented with exaggerated sympathy. "At this rate, Gwen, you're going to wait until you're in your eighties just to lose your virginity."
"I am not waiting until my eighties!" Gwen protested, indignant.
"Forties at best!" Sam chimed in helpfully.
"You two are unbelievable!" Gwen groaned, though she couldn't hide the smile in her voice.
Eventually, after another fifteen minutes of back-and-forth banter, the marathon phone call finally came to an end.
************
MJ unplugged her headset and tossed her phone onto the mattress beside her. She turned over onto her belly, resting her chin on her hands while staring lazily at the ceiling, thinking back over all the silly bickering she had just shared with her friends.
Ever since her parents had passed away, Sam, Gwen, and Liz—along with the rest of the group—had served as her primary anchor to the world. They filled the quiet house with laughter and noise, keeping her from ever feeling hollow inside.
Aunt Anna was wonderful and loving, of course, but having friends who made you feel genuinely alive brought a very unique kind of warmth and satisfaction.
As her mind drifted, her thoughts inevitably wandered back toward Peter Parker.
She couldn't deny it to herself anymore—she did have a crush on him.
It was a feeling that had quietly taken root during their childhood and grown stronger with every shared smile, every awkward joke, and every moment he had stood up for others. Deep down, she also had a soft, lingering feeling that Peter shared those exact same emotions.
So why do we hesitate so much? MJ thought to herself, a soft sigh escaping her lips. Why was it so hard for either of them to just say the words out loud? To simply ask each other out?
As she remained drowned in her quiet reflections, an unexpected guest made its way into her bedroom, entirely unannounced.
This intruder was small—much smaller than anyone would ever notice at a glance. It was a distinctly unique spider, boasting strange, iridescent patterns across its tiny thorax that shimmered strangely under the room's soft lighting.
The creature tiptoed silently across the fabric of MJ's bedsheets, crawling closer until it reached her exposed hand resting against the mattress.
MJ felt a faint tickle against her skin. Before she could react or brush it away, a sharp, stinging pain shot through her hand as the spider sank its fangs hard into her index finger.
"Ouch!" MJ yelped in sharp surprise, jolting upright and shaking her hand violently.
The strange spider skittered away rapidly, vanishing into the shadows beneath her dressers, leaving behind a thoroughly displeased redhead clutching her throbbing finger.
"Great. Just great," MJ muttered, frowning at the tiny red puncture mark already swelling on her skin.
She immediately got up, hurried into her adjoining bathroom, and turned on the tap. She ran cold water over the bitten finger, applying soothing cream in an effort to dull the sudden, burning ache.
However, as soon as she turned off the faucet and stepped back out into her bedroom, a sudden, violent wave of dizziness hit her like a physical blow.
Her vision swam, colors bleeding into blurred streaks. Her head throbbed with an intense, radiating heat that surged through her veins, making her knees buckle beneath her.
"What... what is..." MJ gasped out, reaching out to grab her desk for support, but her fingers slipped right off.
Before she could process what was happening to her body, her strength drained away completely, and she collapsed, passing out cold on the floor of her bedroom as her own body began to alter.
