Chapter 46 - Chapter 46: Unintended Consequences (3)

In another part of Queens, in a luxurious apartment building, lived Gwen Stacy, daughter of NYPD Captain George Stacy.

The blonde teen had just wrapped up a late-night group call with her friends after finally putting her homework to rest.

Gwen had lost her mother during childbirth, making her father her sole anchor growing up. But these days, thanks to his high-demand job as a police captain—and especially due to the recent, absurdly chaotic event infamously dubbed the 'Murder Meat Chaos'—their face-to-face moments were growing painfully rare.

During times like this, she was deeply grateful for her inner circle. Sure, her friends were a bit unhinged, but they were loyal to the core.

Her mind wandered back to a teasing remark made during their call about her having a crush. Most people who saw them together assumed she harboured a crush on Danny.

Sure Danny was calm, mature, and remarkably collected—almost too composed for a teenager. But the truth was, Danny didn't pull at her heartstrings that way.

The actual subject of her secret affection was Peter Parker. Yes, the very same earnest, dorkily charm-laden Peter that her close friend Mary Jane also happened to be pining over. It was a textbook, tragic romance-comedy love triangle waiting to blow up in her face.

Danny possessed a wisdom that felt far beyond his years, but Peter? Peter had an endearing, bumbling innocence that she couldn't help but find completely magnetic.

Shaking off the mild existential dread of loving her best friend's crush, Gwen stood up and headed toward the bathroom to wash up.

As she reached for the light switch, a sharp, prickling itch flared across the back of her hand. Before she could even lift her other hand to scratch it, a sudden, blinding jolt of agony shot straight up her arm.

"Ouch! What the—!" Gwen yelped, wincing as her arm throbbed with heat.

She brought her hand up, staring wide-eyed at the little eight-legged culprit dangling from a microscopic thread of web near her thumb. It was an oddly iridescent spider, looking entirely pleased with its life choices.

"Are you serious?!" Gwen gritted her teeth in sheer irritation. She didn't hesitate—with swift, aggressive precision, she flicked the pest off and stomped on it with her slipper. "Out of eight million people in this ridiculous city, you had to bite me?!"

She glared down at the flat squished dot on the floor, rubbing her hand. The initial sting quickly mutated into a heavy, burning fever that made her pulse hammer wildly in her ears. The room began to spin in slow, nauseating circles.

"Oh, great..." she muttered, her vision blurring as her knees gave out beneath her. "Just... fantastic..."

Before her body hit the bathroom floor, darkness claimed her completely.

(JFK International Airport)

Just before dawn could breach the dark horizons of New York City, a sleek, pristine white charter flight made a smooth touchdown onto the runway at JFK International Airport.

The aircraft's primary door hissed open, and stepping out onto the platform was a strikingly elegant woman in her early to mid forties.

Calling her merely 'graceful' was a gross understatement.

She had sharply styled, platinum-blonde hair cut into a chic bob, pierce-bright green eyes, and an effortlessly commanding posture. Dressed in a tailored black office skirt suit, designer heels, and a sleek overcoat draped over her shoulders, she turned heads without even trying.

This was Anastasia Hardy, the sharp-witted Founder and CEO of Hardy Foundations.

Stepping out right behind her was a younger, distinctly wilder mirror image.

Fifteen-year-old Felicia Hardy shared her mother's striking features and icy green eyes, but her platinum-blonde hair flowed down in a voluminous, untamed mane that gave her a dangerous, feline charm.

Felicia was only ten when her father, Walter Hardy, had mysteriously vanished without a trace. Nearly a year ago, Anastasia had whisked Felicia off to Europe to oversee major corporate expansions and handle high-stakes international deals.

Anastasia took a breath of the crisp morning New York air, adjusting her sunglasses despite the sun not being up yet. "Ah, finally home. Dirty, noisy, and full of economic opportunities."

Felicia casually adjusted her purse, a slow, mischievous smirk spreading across her face as she looked toward the distant skyline. She couldn't care less about her mother's corporate ventures or board meetings.

What had truly kept her glued to her phone throughout their long flight across the Atlantic were the absurd, frantic news headlines and viral videos emerging from NYC over the past few weeks.

"If even ten percent of these local rumors are true, Mother," Felicia purred lightly, stepping down the stairs with effortless grace, "this trip back is going to be far less boring than London."

Anastasia cast a quick, knowing glance back at her daughter. "Felicia, darling. Please try to keep your hands in your pockets."

"I have no idea what you're implying," Felicia said, innocently placing a hand over her heart, though her glittering eyes betrayed every word.

Anastasia rolled her eyes and said, " Felicia, I am your mother. And as your mother, I know that look in your eyes. So, please. Try to help yourself since we are here to conduct legitimate business, not play cat and mouse."

"As I have said before, mom. I have no idea what you are talking about," concluded Felicia with a silly smile of hers once again.

Anastasia could only sigh as they walked down.

Assistants quickly gathered their heavy luggage as a sleek black luxury sedan pulled up to the tarmac.

The duo slipped into the heated leather backseat, and with a quiet hum of the engine, the car smoothed away into the early morning New York traffic.

**********

Outside the tinted windows, Manhattan emerged through the morning fog like a jagged silhouette of steel and glass.

Felicia leaned back into the plush leather seat, tapping her manicured nails against the phone's screen as she refreshed her local news feeds.

The stories out of New York had grown increasingly surreal over recent weeks, especially the latest reports that were laced with strange, supernatural occurrences.

Either way, it sounded far more entertaining than analyzing quarterly revenue projections or attending charity galas in Paris.

"I believe you remember our schedule for the week?" Anastasia spoke up, breaking the quiet hum of the sedan as she reviewed a series of documents on her tablet.

"Of course, Mom," Felicia replied smoothly, not taking her eyes off her screen. "Presentable, polite, and completely focused on corporate synergy."

"Don't give me that tone," Anastasia said mildly, though a faint smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "I know how restless you get when we stay in one place for too long. Just... remember where we are. New York has always had more eyes on it than London or Rome. The police are on high alert, and with these new 'phenomena' running around, security across the borough is tighter than ever."

"Tighter security just means less competition," Felicia mused softly under her breath.

The sedan glided across the bridge, entering the bustling heart of Midtown. Looking out the window, Felicia noticed subtle signs of recent chaos—construction crews repairing damaged masonry along a corner avenue, faint scorch marks near an alley, and lingering police barricades.

The city was clearly recovering from whatever bizarre incident had transpired involving the infamous 'Meat Chaos', but underneath the surface, the atmosphere vibrated with a unique, dangerous electricity.

For someone like Felicia Hardy, that electricity was magnetic.

It had been nearly a year since she had last put on the suit, since she had last stretched her legs as the Black Cat across the rooftops of New York.

In Europe, her mother's vigilant eye and constant travel had forced her to keep a low profile. But back here, in the shadows of the concrete jungle where she grew up, the old itch was returning fast.

The luxury car eventually turned down a private drive, pulling into the underground garage of the penthouse complex the Hardy family maintained in Upper East Side. The garage door sealed behind them with a heavy hydraulic thud.

"We'll rest for a few hours before the afternoon briefings," Anastasia announced, gathering her tablet as the driver opened her door. "Try to get some sleep, Felicia. Jet lag is terrible for the skin."

"I'll be fine, Mom," Felicia said, stepping out into the cool garage air.

While the staff busied themselves carrying the heavy luggage up to the private elevator, Felicia took her time walking into the suite. The penthouse was pristine, bathed in early morning sunlight filtering through floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park.

Felicia made her way straight to her personal quarters at the end of the long hallway.

Closing the door behind her, she locked it with a soft click. She walked over to her walk-in closet, sliding aside a seamless wood panel hidden behind a row of designer coats.

Behind it sat a reinforced biometric safe that had remained untouched for nearly twelve months.

She rested her palm against the scanner. With a soft chime, the safe clicked open, revealing a familiar set of sleek black leather gear, customized climbing claws, and bad-luck probability tech.

Felicia reached out, running her fingers lightly across the dark fabric. A thrill ran down her spine.

"Looks like my break is officially over," she whispered to the empty room, her eyes gleaming with anticipation.
