Chapter 37 - Chapter 35: The Sunset and the Signal

[AUTHOR NOTE: A friend suggested that I ask readers for powerstones and reviews. It will help my fic reach more people. I know that readers are lazy. So I will give 3 extra chapters for 15 good reviews. 1 chapter for 5 review. And 1 extra chapter for 100 powerstone. I think this motivation is enough. Have a good day.]

Seventh Pharmaceutical Research Center. Underground Lab.

"Join the Dark Side..."

Nunotaba Shinobu paused. The "Dark Side" was synonymous with violence and corruption in Academy City.

"Don't misunderstand. HARMONY is not a tool that blindly obeys the Board. It is a scalpel. A special force dedicated to purging researchers who have lost their humanity—people who create hells like this."

Yuuya's voice was deep and persuasive.

"In the past, researchers who committed atrocities were just reassigned or imprisoned. They were valuable assets. But under HARMONY... they will be purged."

"I'm just a researcher," Nunotaba whispered, gripping her clipboard. "I'm not a soldier. What can I do?"

"I don't need soldiers. I need brains. I need someone who knows the system."

Yuuya shrugged. "Besides... don't you want to atone?"

He looked directly into her eyes.

"You are a primary contributor to this project. If it weren't for the Testament machine you invented, the Sisters couldn't be programmed with combat data. The Level 6 Shift wouldn't exist."

Nunotaba lowered her head. A shadow fell over her eyes.

She knew.

If she hadn't invented that learning device, mass-producing Level 3 clones would have taken years, not weeks. The blood of nearly 10,000 Sisters was on her hands.

"I'll join," she said, lifting her head. Her gaze was determined. "Even if I don't know what role I can play... I have to stop this."

"Welcome to the team."

Yuuya patted her shoulder. To be honest, he was growing fond of this sharp-tongued, "Evil Eye" scientist.

"Researcher Nunotaba! Have you collected the data yet?" A colleague called out from across the room.

"Oh. No need. This... new researcher is helping me," Nunotaba lied smoothly, her face calm.

"Good. Then I'll start moving the active units."

Yuuya nodded at her and swaggered toward the rest area.

"Time to kidnap some clones."

...

The Rest Area.

The break room was spacious, equipped with vending machines and a small cafeteria for the staff.

Sitting upright on plastic chairs were thirteen Misaka Sisters. They were dressed in the beige Tokiwadai uniform, wearing combat goggles around their necks. They sat perfectly still, like dolls on a shelf, waiting for their turn to die.

"You. And you. Come here."

Yuuya pointed at two Sisters at random.

The two stood up and walked over mechanically.

"DO, Misaka asks if you require assistance with manual labor?" one asked.

"No labor. Just cooperation. Don't be scared~"

Yuuya grabbed their arms.

Snap.

[Ability: Move Point]

Zip.

They vanished.

The remaining eleven Sisters stared at the empty space.

"Alert. Misaka 9983 has disappeared."

"DO, Misaka asks: Did you see Misaka 9984 vanish as well?"

"Is Misaka hallucinating?"

"Querying the Misaka Network... DO, Misaka is investigating."

In less than a minute, chaos erupted in the lab.

"What the hell happened?! Why did two subjects disappear?!" the Project Supervisor roared, storming into the room.

"I don't know! According to the Network, they were touched by a researcher and vanished instantly!"

"Impossible! None of our staff have spatial abilities!"

"Director... could it be an intruder?" a researcher stammered, sweating profusely.

"Damn it! One subject was lost yesterday, and now two more?! Locate them immediately via the Network!"

...

Rooftop of a Nearby Building.

Zip.

Three figures materialized on the concrete roof.

The sudden shift from the dim, sterile underground lab to the bright surface world was jarring.

Yuuya squinted against the light. The two Sisters squeezed their eyes shut, then slowly opened them.

The air was warm. The sky was painted in a brilliant, pale red sunset.

The Sisters didn't panic. They just stood there, staring blankly at the horizon.

"This is... Outside. DO, Misaka states with trembling vocal cords."

"It is Outside," Misaka 9983 agreed on the left. Her face remained expressionless, but her pupils dilated.

"You don't seem panicked. Is this your first time seeing the sunset?" Yuuya asked with a smile.

"It is the male who abducted Misaka 9982. DO, Misaka exclaims in surprise."

Misaka 9984 turned her unfocused gaze toward him.

"Looks like 9982 already uploaded her memories to the Network. I'm famous."

Yuuya grinned. "How about it? Do you want to thank me with a kiss? I'd be happy to accept!"

"Kiss?" 9984 tilted her head.

"DO, Misaka asks: Is the male suggesting a transfer of oral bacteria? Or is he attempting to sense neural signals via the mucous membranes of the mouth?"

"Neural signals..." Yuuya chuckled. "Hehehe. It seems the researchers didn't program any romance into you. It's kind of cute."

"Misaka's memory contains data on the Outside World uploaded by 9982. DO, Misaka notes the discrepancy."

Misaka 9983 reached out a hand, trying to grasp the red light of the sun.

"But what Misaka is feeling now is different from the data."

"Of course it's different," Yuuya said softly. "9982 saw the night sky. This is evening."

"A warm breeze... scents of traffic and food... the wind changing direction..."

The Sister looked up at the burning clouds.

"It is beautiful. DO, Misaka whispers."
