Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 7

Seeing Yukino safe and sound, the tense Tsubasa immediately relaxed.

"Just now... what was that?"

Recalling the shot he had just fired, Tsubasa felt as if he had been divinely assisted. He had entered an unknown state.

Tsubasa didn't know what it was. He tried hard to activate it again, but it was elusive.

"What is this... It couldn't be a sign that some kind of Genetic Lock is about to open, could it?"

On the other side, Yukino subconsciously bent down to pick up the scroll on the ground. Then, a panel popped up...

[Item: Electro Arrow Scroll obtained!]

[Item Name: Electro Arrow Scroll

Item Type: Consumable (One-time Use Learning Scroll)

Item Description: Players can use this item to learn and master an offensive Magic ∙ Electro Arrow. It takes 1 to 3 days to reach entry level, and 7 days for proficient level before it can be used preliminarily.]

However, Yukino didn't have the leisure to examine the scroll carefully right now.

Because Tsubasa had fired his gun to save her, all the zombies on the top floor were attracted.

The dense tide of corpses was overwhelming, like a scene from a zombie movie.

"Don't forget the way I taught you to shoot: release the safety, and fire!" Tsubasa reminded Yukino.

Earlier, on the way, when they weren't fighting zombies, Tsubasa had taught Yukino the basics of using a firearm.

For someone who had never touched a gun, even having a real firearm made stable shooting difficult. A hint of obvious panic appeared on Yukino's face.

Looking at the roaring zombies rushing forward like a black tide, Yukino hurriedly pulled out her Beretta M9, released the safety, and began firing.

Even though she didn't understand guns, Yukino was very smart. She had paid close attention to Tsubasa's process of selecting a gun, and mimicking his method, she had chosen the same type of firearm. Plus, Tsubasa had taught her before.

BANG, BANG, BANG—!!

The sound of gunfire was incessant.

Tsubasa's expression was grim. Carrying the AK-105, he unleashed a spray of bullets.

In this situation, neither the Colt Python nor the Beretta M9 was as effective as a rifle.

Under the powerful suppressive fire, all the zombies were killed before they could even reach the two of them.

Several minutes later, the battle ended. In the corridor, the floor was littered with messy corpses mangled by ammunition; severed limbs and foul blood were splattered everywhere. The ceiling, floor, and walls were all stained with foul-smelling blood, resembling a gruesome, bloody abstract painting. It looked absolutely disgusting.

"Ugh..." Tsubasa heard Yukino retching behind him.

Such a disgusting scene made even him feel nauseous, let alone this sheltered young lady.

Tsubasa raised an eyebrow, pulled out the AK-105's magazine, and saw there was still one round left.

He clearly remembered the words of the retired leader of special forces who had taught him how to shoot: "Never let your magazine be empty; a full magazine is always worthwhile. Sometimes, during a life-or-death confrontation with an enemy, all that separates you is that one fatal round."

With a 'click,' the ammunition was reloaded. Tsubasa turned his head to look at the pale young woman leaning against the wall: "How are you feeling?"

"Mhm..." Yukino considered herself very brave—at least, compared to those timid people in the classrooms who dared not leave. But the scene just now had clearly caused a huge mental and physical shock.

"Take deep breaths, and try to think of happy things." Tsubasa stood quietly beside Yukino, keeping her company.

Slowly, he watched the young woman's breathing gradually stabilize.

"Thank you," said Yukino, patting her chest. Her usually cold blue eyes were revealing a hint of gratitude.

Tsubasa knew that this "thank you" was for saving her life earlier, in addition to helping her get better just now. He nodded without unnecessary words, preparing to enter the principal's office. But he saw a scroll of light brown oil paper lying on the hand Yukino extended to him.

"Here, it dropped after you killed that zombie just now. It must be a special item."

Tsubasa hadn't actually noticed this dropped scroll. Earlier, his entire focus had been on the zombies.

Taking the scroll, his fingertips touched the coarse paper, and the notification panel appeared before his eyes.

After two seconds of silence, he looked up at the young woman and said, "You are good."

Yukino was slightly startled, then nodded her small head naturally. She said, "Of course I am excellent."

She never hypocritically shied away from compliments.

Since childhood, she had been excellent, possessing both looks and intelligence, achieving outstanding results in her studies and other areas.

However, because of this, she was envied by her peers and isolated from a young age, and her personality also meant she had few friends.

At this moment, the cooperation between the two, which had originally been maintained only by the necessity of survival, seemed to have quietly gained a measure of trust.

The door to the principal's office was locked. Tsubasa pried it twice with his military knife, and with a 'click,' the lock quickly opened. He then pushed the door open.

The interior of the office was much tidier than either of them had expected. In the corner, there were unopened 12-liter barrels of mineral water. Next to it stood a huge snack cabinet, three people tall, filled with typical American snacks.

In the center, a thick cashmere rug was laid out. Above it were spacious and imposing solid wood tables and chairs.

Judging by the size, it was clear that the principal of this school often worked at his desk in the office, occasionally enjoying a pleasant afternoon tea.

"I will pack the food!" Yukino volunteered, raising her hand, her expression showing a rare hint of excitement.

After risking their lives and working hard for so long, the two had finally found supplies.

Looking at the situation, if they were frugal, they had enough food reserves for at least a week.

Of course, this didn't account for the people back in the classroom. Otherwise, with twenty-plus mouths to feed, the supplies probably wouldn't last even a single day.

✱✱✱

With Yukino handling the supplies, Tsubasa had some free time. He looked across from the principal's desk.

A rather lavish mahogany bookshelf stood there. It was densely packed with books, taking up one-third of the office's area. The bookshelf mainly held educational books; this was quite fitting for the principal's role as an educator.

Tsubasa approached the bookshelf. His fingertip skimmed across the spines of the books, abruptly stopping at one titled "Educational Psychology." The spine of this book was noticeably thicker than the others, and its edges showed clear signs of wear, suggesting it was frequently read.

Tsubasa tried pulling it outward, and with a 'click,' the bookshelf slid open to the side, revealing a hidden compartment inside.

Three items were placed inside the dark compartment: a dark blue, transparent glass tube with a label reading "Stamina Potion," a pitch-black grenade launcher, and six grenades.
