A spoonful of cereal hovered near my lips as the device on my desk burst into frantic vibration. Suddenly, sugar-dusted silence shattered like glass dropped on linoleum.
It wasn't actual doom. Still, the flood of alerts piled up like the world was ending.
A flicker on the screen - Instagram lights up first. Then a text message slides into view moments later. A phone call rings out just after that. Everything happens within half a minute.
That moment, Ella took hold of my phone. She got it first. Her eyes went wide. Oh my God she said
My spoon hung mid-air, milk sliding down it. "Huh?" I said, eyes lifting from the cereal.
