Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Somewhere Else, Another Screen Lit Up

The world was ending quietly.

No explosions.

No screaming crowds.

Just the sound of rain tapping against rusted metal and the slow, wet cough of someone who already knew they were going to die.

Mirel lay on her side in the alley, fingers digging into puddled water mixed with blood and ash. Her legs no longer responded. She couldn't feel them—not since the collapse.

Not since the mine decided she was done being useful.

She stared at the sky through a narrow gap between buildings.

Gray.

Always gray.

"Figures," she whispered hoarsely. "No light… even at the end."

Footsteps approached.

Boots.

Measured.

Unhurried.

She didn't turn her head.

She didn't need to.

"You lasted longer than expected," a man said above her. "Most don't crawl this far."

Mirel laughed weakly.

"Guess I win… something."

A shadow fell over her.

"You know the rules," the man continued. "Injured workers are liabilities."

She closed her eyes.

"No begging," she murmured. "I know."

The blade rose.

Far away—beyond worlds, beyond sight—

Something stirred.

The forgotten god drifted in a shallow void, his presence flickering like a candle in strong wind. The cost of protecting Kael had not faded. It gnawed at him, hollowing parts of his authority he hadn't even recovered yet.

"Too soon," he whispered to himself.

"I'm not ready."

Then—

A pulse.

Faint.

Barely a whisper.

But unmistakable.

❝Potential Host Detected❞

❝World Classification: Low Faith / High Desperation❞

❝Survival Probability: 3%❞

The god froze.

Another?

So soon?

He followed the thread.

The blade descended.

Mirel felt the wind shift against her neck.

And then—

It stopped.

The man frowned.

"Wh—"

A translucent screen exploded into existence between them.

The man staggered back, clutching his head.

"What is this—?!"

Mirel's eyes flew open.

Light—cold, sharp, unreal—hovered inches from her face.

❝SYSTEM INITIALIZING❞

❝Host Condition: Critical❞

❝Vital Signs Failing❞

She sucked in a ragged breath.

"Am I… hallucinating?"

The god watched closely.

"No," he said softly, though she couldn't hear him yet.

"You're being noticed."

❝System Name: Survivor's Ledger❞

❝Primary Rule: Growth Through Endurance❞

❝Secondary Rule: Pain Converts to Progress❞

The blade-holder backed away.

"I don't like this," he muttered. "I don't like this at all."

He raised his weapon again.

❝Emergency Quest Generated❞

❝Objective: Live❞

❝Reward: Body Stabilization❞

❝Failure: Termination❞

Mirel didn't think.

She screamed.

Not in fear—

In refusal.

"I'm not done!" she screamed, slamming her palm into the ground.

Agony tore through her spine.

Something moved.

Her broken legs spasmed violently.

The man yelped as something sharp tore through his calf.

A metal shard—ripped from the ground—had pierced him.

He fell, screaming.

Mirel gasped.

She could feel her legs again.

Not healed.

But awake.

❝Pain Conversion Activated❞

❝Host Endured Critical Trauma❞

❝Level +1❞

The god inhaled sharply.

❝Divine Feedback Applied: ×10,000❞

The void steadied.

The god's presence strengthened—just a little.

Enough to breathe.

Mirel stared at her trembling hands.

"What… is happening to me…?"

The screen shifted.

❝Warning❞

❝This System Does Not Protect❞

❝It Only Records❞

The man crawled backward, terror etched across his face.

"Monster…" he whimpered.

Mirel looked at him.

Her vision sharpened.

She could see his pulse.

His fear.

His weight distribution.

She dragged herself upright, legs screaming with every inch.

"Don't," he begged. "Please—"

She hesitated.

The god leaned closer.

"You don't need to kill him," he said quietly.

"Just don't die."

Mirel clenched her jaw.

She stepped forward.

Pain flooded her.

Her body shook violently.

But she didn't stop.

She grabbed the man's collar and slammed his head into the wall.

Once.

Twice.

He went limp.

She released him and collapsed, gasping.

❝Threat Neutralized❞

❝Host Survived❞

❝Ledger Updated❞

Mirel lay on her back, rain washing blood from her hair.

Tears streamed from her eyes—not from sadness.

From overload.

"Who are you?" she whispered.

The god hesitated.

Then answered.

"Someone who shouldn't exist anymore."

She laughed weakly.

"Then… we're the same."

Elsewhere—

Kael jolted awake.

His system flared.

❝Parallel Host Activated❞

❝Warning: Shared Consequences Enabled❞

He sat upright, heart pounding.

"A second host?" he muttered.

The god's voice reached him, quieter than before.

"Yes."

Kael's expression hardened.

"Are you losing control?"

"…I'm running out of time."

Kael leaned back, exhaling slowly.

"Then she'll be hunted too."

A pause.

"Yes."

Kael smiled thinly.

"Good," he said. "Then she'll grow."

In the alley, Mirel dragged herself toward shelter.

Each movement hurt.

Each breath burned.

The system followed silently, recording everything.

Above her—

Unseen—

A god watched two fragile pieces move on different boards.

And far away, among hunters and gods alike—

New ripples spread.

Two hosts now.

Two mistakes.

And something far worse than hope had begun to multiply.
