The quiet of the early evening was shattered by a low, rumbling growl that made the fluorescent lights flicker. Outside, the streets seemed to shimmer with a deep crimson glow, and Vario froze mid-step, a box of cup noodles clutched in his hands.
"Wha—what is that?" he whispered, staring at the mass of hulking red silhouettes advancing toward the store.
Bella, leaning against the counter, narrowed her eyes. "Oh no… not again."
Nyx peeked over a shelf, smirking. "Looks like our past finally caught up with us. I hope you're ready, Vario."
Garruk stomped forward, balancing a precarious tower of soda cans like a shield. "Everyone get ready. Nobody's taking this store down!"
The first wave of Oni surged forward, bellowing and stomping the pavement. Their glowing eyes reflected in every window, and even the normally unflappable Vario felt a shiver run down his spine.
"I… I can handle this," Vario muttered, summoning his majiv. A faint, shimmering barrier popped up around the entrance. The nearest Oni slammed into it with a thud that rattled shelves, sending cup noodles tumbling.
"Keep it up!" Nyx cheered from behind the counter, tossing bags of chips like makeshift projectiles. "Distract them!"
Bella dashed across the store, knives flashing in the fluorescent light. Each swing took down an Oni limb or sent one tumbling into a stack of soda cans, which then collapsed in a domino effect.
Seraphine floated above, chanting softly. Her glowing sigils formed a protective dome around the most vulnerable areas of the store. "Focus your energy, Vario. Calm your mind," she called. The hum of her magic created a strange, soothing rhythm amid the chaos.
Vario's barrier flickered as more Oni pressed against it. He gritted his teeth. "I… I can't believe it… thousands of Oni? Why now?!"
The Oni pushed harder, and a few managed to claw their way through the edges of the barrier. Gallo jumped into the fray, tossing random products at the invaders. "Take this! And this! And… whatever this is!" He hurled a frozen turkey dick, hitting an Oni square in the face. It recoiled, squealing in shock, which somehow gave Vario the opening to reinforce his barrier.
Ilyra stomped her boots, freezing patches of floor beneath the Oni. They slipped and stumbled, giving Nyx an opening to flip a cart of chips that sent three of them flying into the glass doors. Kael scribbled in his notebook furiously, calculating trajectories and throwing objects with uncanny precision, turning mundane snacks into weapons of calculated chaos.
Hours—or maybe minutes, it was hard to tell—passed in a blur of screaming Oni, flying noodles, and collapsing soda towers. The first wave began to retreat, howling as Vario's majiv pulsed and Seraphine's protective aura flared.
Vario sank to the floor, breathing hard, sweat soaking his hair. "We… survived?"
Bella wiped her knife clean, smirking. "Barely. But it's just the first wave. You think this is over?"
Nyx leaned on a toppled shelf, grinning. "Nope. That red glow outside? That's only the beginning. Thousands more are coming."
Garruk slammed a soda can into place, gritting his teeth. "Then we'll be ready. The store isn't going down tonight. Not on my watch."
Seraphine floated above, her glow dimming slightly as she whispered prayers for the weary defenders. "We have held the line once… we will do so again."
Vario looked around at the chaos—upturned shelves, scattered noodles, a half-frozen Oni still trying to escape through the front window—and groaned. "Quiet days… don't exist here. They literally do not exist."
And outside, the crimson glow continued to thrum. The first wave had been repelled, but the Oni were only gathering strength.
Somewhere in the shadows, a deep, guttural laugh echoed. The Oni Siege was far from over.
