Chapter 17 - Riven, Wrapped Like a Rice Dumpling

Inside the teachers' office, Professor Alderon looked at Aria and Elayne with a tired expression.

"Aria, Elayne, later you'll come with me to the hospital."

Both girls looked confused but said nothing.

"You probably know about last night already," Professor Alderon continued. "Kael and the others went to help. They were badly injured. We'll go as representatives to visit them."

She'd only learned the details that morning. She'd been worried at first, but upon hearing that no one had died, she finally relaxed.

"Ah—Teacher, is Kael badly hurt? Is it serious?" Aria asked anxiously.

"Yes, how is he?" Elayne asked as well.

"Alright, calm down," Professor Alderon said. "He was treated in time. With rest, he'll be fine in about half a month—maybe even sooner, given a Trainer's physique."

Both girls finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"That's good… that's good."

"Alright, go back to class for now. After school at noon, come with me," Professor Alderon said.

"Yes, Teacher," they replied.

At the same time, at Elite High School, Iria and Skylin were also going as representatives to visit Riven.

By noon, at the plaza of Magic City People's First Hospital, Kael—supported by Lyra—came outside to soak up some sunlight.

Given his physique and the healing from Chansey, he didn't really need support, but Lyra insisted.

The warm sunlight made Kael squint comfortably.

After sitting down on a bench, he took out Corviknight's Poké Ball.

"Come out, Corviknight."

Pop—

A red beam shot out, forming Corviknight's massive body.

"Gah…"

Corviknight instinctively let out a cry, then immediately lowered its voice upon seeing all the patients around.

"Gah-gah…"

When it saw Kael, it lowered its head and rubbed against him, guilt evident in its crimson eyes.

Kael patted its head.

"This isn't your fault. It was my decision."

"Gah…"

"Alright, once we're healed, we'll train harder and break into the Gym Tier," Kael promised.

Lyra watched quietly, saying nothing, but she made a firm decision—

Once Pichu hatched, she would train seriously too, so she could help her brother in the future.

"Kael, I knew it was you."

A familiar voice rang out.

Turning around, they saw an Ursaring carrying a young man in a hospital gown.

Kael and Lyra burst out laughing.

"Ha ha ha! Riven, did you offend the doctor or something? You're wrapped up like a rice dumpling!"

"Heehee, Brother Riven, you look hilarious!"

"Gah-gah-gah!"

Even Corviknight couldn't hold back.

Riven was wrapped in bandages from head to toe, only his face visible. Without Ursaring, Kael might not have recognized him.

"Hey! That's enough, okay?!" Riven protested. "Do you guys have no sympathy? I'm injured and you're laughing?!"

"And you too, Lyra—learning bad habits from your brother!"

"And you, big guy—what's so funny?!"

He even slapped Corviknight's mountain-like body in annoyance.

"Oh please," Kael said lazily. "If you were really that badly hurt, you'd be lying in bed, not strolling around on Ursaring."

"Exactly," Lyra nodded vigorously.

Exposed, Riven didn't feel embarrassed at all.

"My mom told the nurses to wrap me up like this," he complained. "I didn't ask for it."

"Auntie's just worried about you," Kael said with a grin.

"…Fair point," Riven conceded.

"Enough about me," Riven said quickly. "How did you get hurt?"

He really hadn't seen Kael this badly injured before.

"And with Corviknight at Elite Peak, even a Gym-tier demonized Pokémon shouldn't have made you this miserable."

Kael sighed.

"Two demonized Skarmory—one Gym-tier, one late Elite. In a dungeon, I could've kited them to death."

"But in the city, surrounded by buildings, we had to end it quickly. Otherwise, the damage would've been catastrophic. Sometimes, we don't get to choose."

"And after this, I really need to speed up training my second Pokémon. Relying only on Corviknight has too many limitations."

Riven nodded in agreement.

His Ursaring had reached Elite as well, and he'd already asked his dad to help find a Flying-type Pokémon.

"You're right. I've asked my dad to find me a good Flying-type too."

"A Flying-type?" Kael teased. "Sounds like Uncle Jiang's wallet is about to bleed."

"Bleed? Please," Riven shrugged. "It's all mine eventually anyway. Just early investment."

"You're filial in a very… powerful way," Kael deadpanned.

But Riven wasn't wrong.

He was an only child. Everything his parents owned would eventually be his anyway.
