The 8th month was drawing to a close, and the silence of the Black Box at 3:00 AM was no longer peaceful—it was heavy, suffocating, and filled with the unspoken fears of a man who had everything to lose.
The medical monitors hummed a steady, rhythmic "beep... beep..." in the corner of the master suite. To anyone else, it was just technology; to Keifer, it was the countdown of a ticking time bomb.
POV: Keifer (Mark Keifer Watson)
I sat on the edge of the bed, the cold moonlight cutting across the floor. Jay was finally asleep, her breathing shallow, her hand resting protectively over the swell of her stomach where Astraea had finally settled after her midnight "ninja" session.
I looked at her—really looked at her. Her skin was too pale, the shadows under her eyes too deep. Every time she winced in her sleep, my heart felt like it was being squeezed by a vice.
I am the "Monster." I have stared down the barrels of guns and built an empire out of steel and blood. But as I sat there, I felt like a small, helpless boy. I reached out, my hand trembling as I brushed a stray hair from her forehead.
"Don't leave me, wifey," I whispered, the words barely a breath. "I'm not strong enough for a world without you."
POV: Jay (Jasper Jean Mariano)
I wasn't actually asleep. The pain in my back was too constant, the pressure of the placenta percreta a dull, aching reminder of the war happening inside my body. I heard his voice—broken, raw, and stripped of all its CEO authority.
I opened my eyes slowly. In the dim light, I saw the man the world feared. His head was bowed, his shoulders shaking with the silent, racking sobs he never let anyone else see.
"Hubby?" I breathed.
He flinched, quickly trying to wipe his eyes, his "Monster" mask slamming back into place. "I'm here, Jay. I didn't mean to wake you. Go back to sleep."
"Come here," I said, reaching out my hand.
He hesitated, then crawled onto the bed beside me. He didn't wrap his arms around me like usual; he stayed on his side, looking at me with eyes that were bloodshot and filled with a terrifying, naked agony.
I saw the reports tonight," he choked out, his voice cracking. "Ci n didn't want me to see them, but I broke into the server. The invasion is deeper, Jay. The surgeons... they're talking about 'damage control.' They're talking about you like you're a casualty of war."
The Breaking of the Monster
Keifer grabbed my hand, squeezing it so hard his knuckles turned white, then immediately loosened his grip, terrified of hurting me.
"I can't do it, Jay," he sobbed, his forehead dropping onto my shoulder. "I can't be the man they expect me to be. I can't be a father to Alexander and Astraea if I have to look at them and know their lives cost me yours. I'll hate them. I'll hate the world. I'll burn the Black Box to the ground."
"You won't," I whispered, my own tears spilling over. "Because you love them. And they are the best parts of us."
I don't care about 'parts of us'!" he roared in a whisper, his eyes flashing with a desperate, wild light. "I want you. I want the woman who called me a monster and then kissed me anyway. I want the doctor who fixes everyone but herself. If I lose you... I lose my soul. There will be nothing left but the Monster, Jay. And I don't want to be him anymore."
I pulled his head closer, my fingers tangling in his hair. I could feel his hot tears soaking into my gown. This was the man who had bought an entire mall just to make me smile, the man who had placed Section E on high alert for months—and here he was, shattered by a biology he couldn't control.
The Vow in the Dark
"Keifer, look at me," I commanded, using my "Savage" voice, even though it was weak.
He looked up, his face a mask of grief.
"I am a surgeon," I said, my eyes locking onto his. "I have seen miracles on the operating table that science couldn't explain. I have the best team in the world. I have Ci n, Mica, and Freya. I have a family that would fight the Grim Reaper himself. But most of all... I have you. I am not going to let go of your hand, hubby. I am going to fight for every breath, for every heartbeat."
"Promise me," he whispered, his lip trembling. "Promise me you won't choose the baby over yourself. Promise me you'll stay."
It was the hardest lie—and the greatest truth—I ever had to tell. "I promise I will do everything to stay with you, Keifer. I'm not finished being your wifey yet."
He leaned down and kissed me—a kiss that tasted of salt, desperation, and a love so profound it felt like it could stop time. He stayed there, his forehead against mine, our breaths mingling in the dark.
"If you leave," he whispered, "I'm coming after you. I'll find a way to the other side and bring you back. You aren't allowed to go anywhere without a Watson security detail."
I laughed through my tears, a small, fragile sound. "Deal."
The Silent Watch
Keifer didn't move for the rest of the night. He stayed wrapped around me, his hand resting over Astraea, who was unusually quiet, as if she knew her father needed the silence.
I watched him as he finally drifted into a fitful sleep. Even in his dreams, his brow was furrowed, his hand gripping mine like a lifeline. He was the most powerful man in the country, but in this room, he was just a man terrified of a world where the stars went out.
As the sun began to peek over the horizon, signaling the start of the 9th month, I looked at the photo of Aurora on the nightstand.
Watch over us, little one, I prayed. Don't let your father's heart break again.
