Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Bottleneck

The Hobgoblins reached the lobby barricade, the low wall I had built earlier.

They didn't try to climb it. They formed a phalanx, locking their shields together.

"Forward!" the Kobold Shaman screeched in broken English.

The front row smashed their shields against my stone wall. Once. Twice.

Crack.

My beautiful granite wall crumbled.

"They're breaking the geometry," I muttered. "They have Siege Damage."

They poured into the stairwell. This was it. The fatal funnel. The stairs were narrow, forcing them to come up two by two.

I waited until the first two heads popped into view on the second-floor landing.

"Fire!"

I pulled the release lever on the turret. The spring snapped forward.

Thwack!

A three-inch industrial nail flew through the air. It punched through the lead Hobgoblin's eye. The monster dropped without a sound.

I cranked the lever back. Click.

Thwack.

Another nail. Another hit.

"It's working!" Silas yelled, charging a void bolt.

But the turret had a flaw. It was slow. I had to crank it by hand after every shot. The Hobgoblins were climbing faster than I could reload.
