Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Ur: Is Ide a Genius?

Yes, when Ide first crossed over into the One Piece world, he awakened something he had fantasized about during his chuunibyou phase—a system stitched together from various anime tropes called the "Grind to Get Stronger System." This was the very foundation of his dominance in the world of pirates.

 Magic:

 ???

"Still haven't awakened any magic?"

Ide looked at the string of question marks in the "Magic" row of his panel. After a moment of thought, he turned to Ur. "Ur, could you show me that magic circle you used earlier one more time?"

"You mean Ice-Make Magic?"

Ur raised an eyebrow. She wasn't sure what Ide was up to, but being the kind soul she was, she agreed. "Sure, no problem."

Hummmm!

As she spoke, Ur struck her pose. Channeling her magic power, she conjured the crystalline, icy-blue magic circle in front of her. It was as intricate as a work of art.

"Yes, that's the one."

Ide seized the opportunity to study the circle closely. His brain went into overdrive, using his mental energy to trace, outline, and memorize every detail of the structure before him.

"Maker Magic is a magic of freedom!" Ur explained as she demonstrated. "Ide, enjoy the magic. Use it to shape whatever forms you can imagine!"

She walked him through the principles and techniques, hoping to help him learn faster and better.

Ding!

Fortunately, the magic circle for Ice-Make Magic wasn't overly complex. Ide quickly committed its form to memory.

Now for the final step: using his mental energy to "draw" the memorized circle into the "Magic" row on his system panel.

This was easy for Ide. About five minutes later, he had perfectly replicated Ur's magic circle, stroke by stroke, into the system interface.

At the same time, his system panel updated.

[Magic:]

 Ice-Make Magic: LV0 (+)

"Heh."

"Got it."

The corners of Ide's mouth turned up. As expected, as long as he put in the effort, nothing was impossible.

"System, add points."

Using his mind like a mouse cursor, Ide clicked the little plus sign (+) next to Ice-Make Magic: LV0.

[Upgrade Failed.]

[Insufficient Magic Points.]

Unfortunately, his first attempt failed.

"Not enough MP, huh?"

Ide glanced at his Magic Points stat, then at the description for his First Magic Origin: Gains 1 MP per hour in Deep Meditation.

He frowned, then immediately dropped into a meditative trance like an old monk, beginning his grind.

"Ide?"

"Ide!"

After calling his name a few times and getting no response, Ur realized he was in a deep state of meditation. She smiled in surprise. "This guy... he picks things up fast."

"Ur, I'm heading back."

"I'll bring those fruits you wanted later."

Susan needed to get back to town; she had a business to run, after all.

"Okay."

"I'm going to stay here and watch Ide. Don't want him to accidentally hurt himself while training."

Ur smiled at Susan, declining to walk her back.

"I know, I know."

"It's not every day you meet a guy who's taller than you, stronger than you, and most importantly, handsome."

Susan winked, signaling that she understood completely and wouldn't stick around to be a third wheel.

"Susan! Nobody will think you're mute if you stop talking!" Ur fumed as she watched Susan leave.

"Well then, I might as well start my own training for the day."

Ur took one last look at the meditating Ide, then sat down cross-legged and began her own practice.

---

Time flew by.

Nine hours passed in a blink.

The sky began to darken.

"Time to make dinner."

Ur finished her meditation and shook the snow off her clothes. She looked at Ide, who was still deep in his trance, and frowned slightly. "Should I wake him up?"

Hummmm!

Just as she spoke, Ide's eyes snapped open.

He immediately struck the pose Ur had taught him earlier.

"Ice-Make..."

"Hey, hey, hey!"

"No way?!"

Ur noticed him waking up, but when she saw him strike that familiar pose, cold sweat broke out on her forehead. She looked at him in total disbelief. "How long has it been?!"

"...Lance!"

As Ide finished the incantation, a spear of ice shot from his hands, flying straight and true until it pierced the trunk of a tree ten meters away.

"It worked!"

Ide smiled faintly. He turned to the dumbstruck Ur and grinned. "Starting today, I'm officially a wizard. Right, my dear Teacher Ur?"

"I'm not your teacher."

"I haven't even taught you anything yet."

Ur was numb with shock. She really didn't understand why Ide had begged her to teach him magic if he could just... do that.

Is this guy... a legendary magical genius? she wondered.

Meanwhile, Ide's character panel updated again.

[Magic Origin:]

 First Magic Origin:

Gains 1 MP every 30 minutes in Deep Meditation.

Gains 1 MP per hour while Sleeping/Resting.

 Current Total MP: 0

[Magic:]

 Ice-Make Magic: LV1 (+)

"Oh."

Ide examined the changes. "I see. As my Ice-Make Magic levels up, my First Magic Origin grows stronger too. That means learning other magic later on will be even easier! All roads lead to Rome, indeed."

"But wait... if there's a 'First' Magic Origin, does that mean there's a Second? Or a Third?!"

Ide rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

"Teacher Ur, what's wrong?"

Ide finally noticed Ur standing there, staring at him with her jaw on the floor.

"Don't call me Teacher."

"I'm not your teacher."

"I'm going to make dinner."

Ur shook her head and walked into the wooden cottage like a zombie to start cooking.

"Oh."

Ide was a bit confused by her reaction, but he didn't dwell on it. He closed his eyes and went back into deep meditation to harvest more magic particles from the atmosphere.
