Chapter 3 - The AI

Running over the rooftops, I jump from one crumbling building to the next. The odds of survival created by Markess the red says, move to the highest vantage point. When low on equipment, find survivors, share loot, and work within a unit. The odds of survival can increase from ten percent to forty just by adding a single member.

Basically if the undead want to come at us in swarms, let's come at them in swarms. In the distance stands a massive concrete tower. It was built before the fall, a military facility designed to treat and defend against the infected. Other than the city, no other structure is as well defended. I should, if lucky, meet someone there, then I can use them, control them, and win this stupid game.

Arriving before the gates, I glance up at the colossus tower of concrete. It is absurd. Scaring the twelve foot gates I bend my knees, catching myself.

"This is a military broadcast." A little radio plays in the security office. "All military and non military personnel are to evacuate to point alpha. This message will repeat. This is a military broadcast. All military and non military personnel are to evacuate to point alpha. This message will repeat." Fuck that gives me the heebie jeebies. Why is something like that still running anyways? Walking to the tower the damaged walls come into sight. Deep groves litter it, with massive holes spread about, revealing rebar. What did this to concrete? I run my hand over it.

Walking inside everything is demolished, seats strung over the floor, electronics sputter with life, and a spooky whaling echoes through the halls.

"Warning mission base bravo is offline, failed to connect call. Warning mission base bravo is offline, failed to connect call." I walk past a skeleton desperately clutching a phone. Pour sack, didn't even die fighting.

Walking past a pile of bones I enter the stairwell. Up or down? Why is there a down? I clench my fists walking down, the flickering red lights the only proof I am not going to miss my step and plummet to my death. Reaching the bottom I sigh, three hundred and eighty nine stairs, what are they hiding down here? I mean this ruin has already been scavenged top to bottom, so it can't really be much.

"Hello." A robotic voice speaks from a camera. "I am an AI, code named Dawn. I do not detect an identification badge, if you have lost your badge please return to the surface, and speak with professor Nox. If you do not have an identification badge, please return to the surface. If it is an emergency, place your eye upon the scanner for easy verification." A light shines, showing a massive reinforced door, there were scratches, and signs of forced entry, but it seems no one had luck.

Stepping up to the door I knock on it. "Are there people alive in there?"

"Zero vital signs detected." Dawn looks down on me. "Place your eye to the scanner." I lean into the scanner and a laser gleams, scanning my eye up and down. "Wellcome Mars Shepherd Gray, your service is appreciated."

"Wait my dad? Why are you bringing him up?" I ask.

"Rettna scans indicate, you are Shepherd, if that is incorrect say cancel, and reboot. Technical failures can occur over long durations of time. The last maintenance check was one hundred and eighty seven years ago. Recommended duration between checks is twenty eight days."
