Chapter 6 - MOMENTS BETWEEN EVENTS

The wedding festivities had begun in earnest, and the city felt alive with celebration. Bright banners hung along the streets, the hum of music floated from the reception hall, and laughter spilled from every corner. Yet, even amid all the commotion, Nora felt a quiet calm settle over her.

She spotted Ethan near the edge of the crowd, talking to a few distant cousins with a relaxed smile. When he saw her, his face lit up not with dramatics, but with the gentle ease that had always made her heart respond.

He excused himself and approached, hands in his pockets as though he belonged nowhere else but here, beside her. You made it, he said softly, brushing the hem of a tablecloth out of his path.

I did, Nora replied, smiling. I wasn't about to miss all this chaos.

They drifted through the guests together, exchanging polite greetings and small talk, but the real moments happened in the quiet corners. A shared laugh over a mishap with a floral arrangement, a whispered observation about the music, a brush of hands as they reached for the same tray of hors d'oeuvres.

Later, they found themselves on a balcony overlooking the courtyard, the golden lights twinkling below like captured stars. The hum of conversation and music felt distant here, almost irrelevant.

You're…different in all the right ways, Ethan said, leaning slightly against the railing. I like seeing you like this calm, confident, present.

Nora felt a warmth in her chest she hadn't expected. I could say the same about you. You're…easier to be around than I remembered.

Ethan smiled, a quiet, steady smile that reached his eyes. I've been hoping for this chance, you know. Not just for the wedding, but…for us, if we let it happen slowly.

She glanced at him, the words settling over her like a gentle promise. Slowly is fine, she said. I don't need fireworks to know this feels right.

They lingered there for a while, sharing stories and quiet observations, the kind of conversation that didn't demand perfection, only attention. Around them, the wedding carried on, but in their small bubble, the world felt simpler, warmer, as if all the noise existed only to highlight the calm they found in each other.

As the evening grew cooler, Ethan draped his jacket over her shoulders without a word. The touch was brief but intentional, an unspoken agreement that he was here, steady, and willing to wait for whatever might come next.

When it was finally time to rejoin the crowd, neither moved quickly. Their steps matched, their pace unhurried, each subtle glance and soft smile reinforcing the careful bond they were building.

And as Nora glanced at Ethan, she realized that hope wasn't just a fleeting feeling anymore. It had begun to root itself in the quiet certainty of shared moments, in gestures that spoke louder than words, in a closeness measured not by urgency, but by presence.

Somewhere, something was happening. And for the first time, Nora felt ready to see exactly where it could lead.
