Chapter 240 - Chapter 240: Level at the Break! Two-Two in Lisbon!

A single yard of space right at the edge of the box.

For practically the entire first half, that yard simply hadn't existed. Pep Guardiola had constructed a machine to swallow it whole. But an actual football match rarely sticks to a training ground chalkboard, and the sudden turnover after Busquets stepped into the passing lane pulled Bayern's backline out of sync for just a few seconds.

Those few seconds were all Lorenzo needed.

Jérôme Boateng lunged across the grass to shut down the angle, but he was a fraction late. Lorenzo used his first touch to cushion the ball onto his right foot, stepping directly into the pocket Tata Martino had spent the whole week pointing out on the whiteboard: the arc of the D, where Manuel Neuer lingered too high off his line and the center-backs were too terrified of the offside trap to step out.

He went for power and lift.

Neuer had stopped the low tracer earlier with that cat-like palm down by the post. Lorenzo remembered that. This time, he caught the ball cleanly on the laces, sending a dipping projectile climbing toward the roof of the net, straight into the narrow window an advanced goalkeeper couldn't retreat to in time.

Neuer twisted around on his heels, frantically backpedaling the instant the leather left the boot. He launched his frame into the air at full stretch, clawing at the night sky.

His fingertips came up empty.

The ball cracked into the upper right netting with a violent snap, shaking the metal stanchion. For half a second, the entire stadium went quiet as the shot registered, and then the Blaugrana end exploded into pure, unadulterated madness.

Fweet—!

2-2.

Lorenzo peeled away toward the corner flag, dropping onto his knees to slide across the slick grass. The entire team swarmed him in seconds. Neymar arrived first, diving onto his back, followed immediately by Messi, Iniesta, and Busquets, until Xavi threw himself into the pile and buried them under a blur of blue and red shirts.

"LORENZOOO! TWO-TWO! HE'S DONE IT AGAIN!" Santiago's voice crackled through the commentary feed, completely drowned out by the roar of thirty thousand traveling Catalans. "From two goals down in a European Cup final, Barcelona have pulled level before the break! Lorenzo takes aim from distance and picks out the absolute top corner! Neuer had no chance! What a turnaround in Lisbon!"

Inés was practically leaning over her desk to be heard over the noise. "Look at the spatial awareness on that strike, Santiago! Manuel has been holding that ultra-high line all evening, and Lorenzo punished it the second he found a sliver of daylight at the top of the box. Dipping right under the crossbar before Neuer could even reset his feet!"

Down at the bottom of the celebration, Lorenzo pushed his way up and found Neymar grinning at him with grass stains across his cheeks.

"Told you we'd get them," Neymar shouted over the din, laughing as he grabbed Lorenzo's shirt. "Feels just like the Clásico all over again."

Lorenzo wiped sweat from his eyes, grinning back. "Well, not quite like Madrid. In the Clásico we were still chasing the game at the break. Right now we're level."

"Hey, I'll take level any day," Neymar said, slapping him on the shoulder. "Makes the second half a lot more fun."

"Definitely," Lorenzo laughed, getting pulled up by Busquets.

Over on the touchline, Guardiola stood completely still, his hands resting on his hips as he stared blankly at the center circle.

The defensive framework had executed its job for thirty-eight minutes. It had built a two-goal cushion against the most dangerous attacking side in Europe. Then, in a frantic five-minute blitz between the 38th and 43rd minutes, the entire cushion had vanished into thin air, turning his calculated masterclass back into an open, chaotic brawl.

Domènec Torrent walked up beside him, leaning in close. "Pep, what do you think?"

Guardiola shook his head slowly, keeping his eyes on the celebrating Barcelona players. "They figured out the pocket, Dome. Martino knew Neuer's starting line left the D vulnerable, and with those three up front, give them half a yard and they will bury it every single time." He watched Lorenzo trot back toward the halfway line. "Look, we knew the risk when we pushed the defensive line up. We took the gamble because letting them play balls behind us was worse. There wasn't an ideal solution here, only the one with the fewest casualties."

Torrent frowned, checking his tactical pad. "Do we pull Manuel deeper for the second half?"

"No, not yet," Guardiola said firmly, turning back to his assistant. "It is level at two-two. We head into the dressing room, we get their heads right, and we remind them who we are. Barcelona still have to beat us over another forty-five minutes to touch that trophy." He gestured toward the tunnel as the referee looked at his watch. "From here on out, every inch is going to be contested."

Across the technical area, Martino stood with a calm face as the referee blew the whistle for halftime.

Two-two. Recovering from two goals down against the reigning champions in a European final was massive, but Martino was around long enough to know how quickly these games could swing back.

Pautasso was smiling ear to ear beside him on the bench. "We're right back in it, Tata."

"We are level, yes," Martino replied, his tone even and cautious. He didn't smile. "The problem is that Pep now knows our exact workaround. Bayern don't just crumble when they concede. They will adjust their central screen in the locker room, and the second half is going to be twice as physical as the first."

"Come on, enjoy it for thirty seconds," Pautasso said with a chuckle. "You're never completely satisfied, are you?"

"I will be satisfied when the final whistle goes and we have the cup," Martino said, though his features softened as he watched his front three walking together toward the tunnel, talking through their runs. "Still, pulling two goals back against that side took real guts. They earned that break."

The two teams filed off the pitch, deadlocked at two goals apiece with forty-five minutes left to decide the European season.

As they reached the mouth of the tunnel, Lorenzo caught Neuer's gaze across the concrete corridor. The German keeper had made that miraculous one-handed save in the nineteenth minute, but this time, Lorenzo's high strike had beaten him cleanly.

Neuer held Lorenzo's eyes for a second, unblinking, before offering a brief, almost imperceptible nod of genuine respect.

Lorenzo returned the nod, pushed the heavy locker room doors open.
