Chapter 28 - Chapter 28 – The City of Burning Banners

Smoke no longer rose from a single village. It rose from an entire city now.

Far beyond the edges of Beast Territory, the human border city of Azurewall stood beneath a sky gone dark well before its time — a trade hub, a cultivation center, home to three major sect branches that had stood for generations without facing anything close to what was descending on them tonight.

Tonight, it was under siege.

The Demon Lord had shifted his strategy since the village. This wasn't reckless rage redirected somewhere convenient anymore. It was systematic dismantling, eight thousand demons divided carefully into coordinated waves — aerial types targeting the watch towers first, heavy types smashing directly through the gates, corruptors spreading abyss poison through every breach the others opened.

The outer walls of Azurewall trembled under the combined pressure. Citizens ran through market streets that had overturned into chaos, spiritual lanterns shattering underfoot, the city's defensive array flickering violently against a strain it had never been designed to withstand.

Three sect banners rose above the walls in response — the Azure Sword Sect, masters of precise blade work; the Crimson Pill Pavilion, alchemists who'd traded their usual work for battlefield medicine tonight; Stone Mountain Hall, heavy defensive cultivators built to hold ground rather than take it. Their elders stepped onto the walls together, Silver Rank among them, two Half-Gold standing at the front of that combined defense.

The city wouldn't fall easily. Whether it would fall at all remained, for now, genuinely uncertain.

A massive abyss beast rammed the eastern gate first, stone shattering under the impact as demons poured through the breach. Stone Mountain Hall disciples charged to meet them, iron-body techniques activated, forming a human shield wall that took the worst of the initial charge directly onto themselves. Claws tore into that line, blood spraying across the broken stone, but the wall held rather than breaking.

Behind them, Azure Sword Sect cultivators leapt forward, blade light flashing like falling stars across the breach, heads and demonic limbs falling in equal measure under the coordinated strikes. For a few precious minutes, the tide actually slowed.

Then the sky split open above the city, and three demon generals descended together — two Silver Peak, and one Half-Gold among them. The city's defensive formation cracked audibly under the combined weight of their arrival, civilians screaming through streets that had gone from chaotic to genuinely desperate in the span of a single breath.

Children cried beneath collapsed roofs in the western district as fire spread unchecked through streets no one remained to fight it in. In one cellar, a mother held her infant close, praying quietly that the ceiling above her would hold through whatever was happening on the surface. Above ground, cultivators died in slow, deliberate exchanges, buying seconds that felt increasingly unlikely to matter.

The Azure Sword Sect's Vice-Patriarch stepped forward to meet the Half-Gold general directly, his blade radiance condensing into a single line of pure white light. Their clash split the main plaza apart entirely, shockwaves leveling the surrounding buildings in both directions.

Stone Mountain Hall elders joined him moments later, three humans against a single demon general, and still the demon only laughed, abyss energy amplifying mid-fight in a way that told everyone watching he'd been holding back through the opening exchange.

He wasn't fighting alone regardless of how the numbers looked. A second Silver Peak general struck the rear lines simultaneously, targeting the Crimson Pill Pavilion's healers first and specifically — the medical tents burned within minutes, wounded cultivators who'd trusted this ground to be safe cut down where they lay.

The western quarter fell shortly after that, demons pouring through residential streets that had never been built to withstand anything close to a siege. A father held a gate shut with everything he had left in him, until it broke anyway, dragged away while his son's screams carried over the sound of collapsing timber behind him. An elderly grandmother shielded two children with her own body in a doorway that offered no real protection at all, crushed under a demonic claw before either child fully understood what was happening around them.

Flames reflected off broken windows throughout the quarter. Blood mixed freely with rainwater pouring from a ruptured spirit well nearby. The city bells rang without pause through all of it, calling for help that showed no sign of arriving in time to matter.

Within the sanctuary in Beast Territory, Lin Tianren's eyes finally trembled, consciousness returning slowly through the fog his shattered core had left him in. The fox lifted its head at the change, nine tails swaying in response.

The Beast Queen stood nearby in silence, her emerald aura visibly weaker than it had been the night before. She felt what was happening in Azurewall the same way she'd felt the village burn — a human city under calculated, deliberate attack, exactly the kind of strike the Demon Lord had chosen specifically because it cost him nothing directly.

She could intervene. Moving again, though, with the corruption already spreading through her wound, risked making that injury considerably worse than it already was.

Her gaze shifted to Lin Tianren instead, still barely conscious on the ground before her.

"The world won't pause for your recovery," she said quietly, not unkindly, but without softening the truth of it either.

Back in Azurewall, the Half-Gold demon general finally broke through the Vice-Patriarch's defense, his blade shattering under the pressure, his chest opening beneath the follow-up strike. He fell where he stood, and the human defensive formation began collapsing in the wake of his death, the coordination that had held the line for the last hour unraveling all at once.

The city's core array flickered dangerously in response, its stability failing along with the cultivators who'd been feeding it strength. If it fell entirely, nothing would stand between the remaining population and total massacre.

The demon general raised his weapon toward the formation's central pillar, unhurried, already certain of the outcome.

"Let hope die," he said, and brought the weapon down.

[Time Remaining — Primary Clock: 9 Days][Azurewall City: 40% Destroyed][Human Casualties: Severe][Half-Gold Human Elder: Fallen][Demon Generals: 4 Active][Beast Queen: Injured, Holding Position][Lin Tianren: Awakening]

Somewhere in Beast Territory, still fighting his way back to full consciousness, Lin Tianren felt the weight of that strike land through the same distant sovereign resonance that had woken him in the first place — the sense of something vast and undefended finally breaking, far beyond anywhere he could currently reach it.
