Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 – Inferno of the Proud Flame

The western sky over Azurewall glowed red, and not from any sunrise. Fire and smoke had claimed that color for their own hours ago.

The demon general's weapon was still descending toward the city's central formation pillar when a single figure dropped out of the haze above the smoldering rooftops, close enough to intercept the strike before it landed.

Zhao Lianhua. Imperial Princess of the Phoenix Bloodline, and the first real answer this city had received to its bell's continuous, unanswered ringing.

Her royal battle armor caught what little light the burning streets still offered, gold accents flashing against the smoke. Her eyes swept the advancing demon forces with the calm, assessing sharpness of someone who'd walked into considerably worse odds than this before and walked back out the other side.

She didn't speak before she moved. She didn't need to. Her presence alone was enough to make the nearest demons hesitate.

A wave of low Silver-rank demons surged toward her first, eager to test whatever had just interrupted their advance. She flicked one hand, and flame erupted in a continuous arc — a Phoenix Fire Wall that incinerated dozens of them in a single sweep. Wings of ethereal fire unfurled from her back, each motion leaving a trail of burning embers hanging in the smoke behind her.

She laughed, sharp and openly mocking. "Is that all? I expected more from warriors serving a Demon Lord."

A Silver-rank demon general charged directly at her, claws burning with dark energy. Her eyes narrowed, and something in her bloodline answered the challenge fully — a pillar of white-hot fire erupted from the ground beneath him, chains of blazing energy wrapping around his frame before he could close the distance. He struggled against it, and found no give in the binding at all.

A single kick sent him crashing into a collapsing building, demon and debris disappearing together beneath the rubble.

Unlike the human defenders who'd been fighting to simply survive the night, Zhao Lianhua wasn't fighting for survival at all. She was asserting control over ground that had needed someone willing to do exactly that for the last several hours.

Her aura expanded outward in a circular sweep of flame and shockwave together, every demon within fifty meters staggering under the pressure of it. One tried to close in behind her, an agile, horned silver beast moving fast enough that most cultivators wouldn't have registered it in time.

She turned mid-air instead, a fire talon strike burning clean through its hide before it finished its approach. It screamed once and collapsed.

"Step forward," she called out to whatever remained watching from the smoke, "if you're willing to test a princess properly."

Her bloodline carried more than raw flame, and the demons pressing toward her found that out the hard way over the following minutes. The first time her life came under genuine threat that night, a rebirth ability activated on its own — flame engulfing her wound the instant a demon spear found her flank, her body regenerating almost as fast as the damage arrived.

She laughed at the sight of her own healing flesh, something close to genuine amusement in it. "You can't actually harm me," she told the demon that had landed the strike, white-hot flame already searing through the ones still pressing close around her.

Each exchange, each kill, each risk she took without flinching seemed to push something in her bloodline closer to its next threshold, the fire around her burning steadily brighter the longer the fight continued.

A Half-Gold demon general finally broke free of the collapsing wall behind her, aura intense, eyes carrying a malice that had nothing restrained left in it.

She tilted her head at him, more curious than concerned. "You think arrogance alone earns rank?"

She closed the distance herself rather than waiting for him to commit — a Phoenix Wing Burst, both fiery wings expanding fully, each strike cracking the ground beneath her as she moved. He met her head-on, and the collision between Half-Gold demonic force and awakened Phoenix bloodline sent a shockwave outward that flattened stone buildings for a considerable distance in every direction, civilians scattering wherever open ground still existed to run to.

The firestorm that followed consumed most of the surrounding street. She fought through the center of it with something that looked, to anyone watching from a safe enough distance, almost like genuine enjoyment — the thrill of a fight actually worth taking seriously, after however long she'd spent finding fights that weren't.

Within minutes, dozens more demons lay dead across the shattered street, hundreds scattered outright by the force of the exchange. The Half-Gold general survived the encounter, but limped away from it burned and visibly humbled, whatever confidence he'd carried into the fight considerably diminished by the end of it.

Zhao Lianhua hovered above the wreckage afterward, her flames dimming slightly — conserving strength rather than genuinely spent. She wasn't finished tonight, not by a wide margin.

Her aura still radiated outward like molten gold, unmistakably royal, unmistakably certain of its own authority over this ground now. The surviving human defenders below, the ones who'd made it through the worst of the western quarter's collapse, looked up at her with something between disbelief and open awe.

"Even among cultivators who've reached genuine heights," one of them murmured, mostly to himself, "the Princess of Fire is something else entirely."

Far beneath her, the city's core formation pillar still stood, cracked but intact, the strike that would have shattered it entirely arriving a fraction too late to land against anything but the aftermath of her interception. Azurewall wasn't saved yet. But for the first time since the siege began, it had a real chance of surviving until dawn.
