Chapter 193 - Chapter 193: News of a Changed World

Julian did not dare open any of the other books on the shelf before first reading the one that had been written specifically for him. Stepping away from the bookshelf, he turned his attention to appraising the various objects he could not identify at a glance. Most of them turned out to be merely rare relics from the founders' era, things like extinct plants or parts from magical creatures that no longer existed. There were also a couple of items listed as mythical, though neither came close to the level of the tree.

One of them was a rare seed of conjunction fire, something that formed only when every planet in a solar system aligned perfectly. A fire like that was born and extinguished within literal seconds, so obtaining even a seed from it was an extraordinary treasure, even if Rowena Ravenclaw herself had likely had no practical use for it. She had been an enchanter, not a craftsman, so a fire seed would have been nearly useless to her. Most likely, she had stored it away simply because it was a treasure of immense rarity.

The second item was the complete opposite, something probably very useful to Rowena Ravenclaw but worthless to Julian. It was a bloodstone, and according to the system, it contained the blood of more than a thousand different magical beasts. Bloodstones were unusual magical rocks naturally enchanted to absorb the properties of whatever blood touched them. The reason it would have been useful for Rowena and not for Julian was that the stone could display the traits of the blood it had absorbed, allowing those traits to be copied into a wizard's magic and later refined into a unique enchantment from that now nourished copy. The problem was that this only worked for magical humans, and Julian was an elf now, so despite the stone's tremendous value, it was useless to him.

Once he was satisfied with his inspection of the vault, Julian walked over to the small mountain of coins and began counting out twenty thousand galleons. Grimgrip made sure he took only that exact amount, since it was the sum being transferred into Fudge's political account. "With that handled, we're finished here," Julian said firmly, and Grimgrip closed the expanded coin purse holding the gold. They left Gringotts after Julian signed the necessary paperwork authorizing the transfer to Fudge's account. Grimgrip received a tidy commission from the transaction, which seemed to leave the goblin in quite a pleasant mood as they departed.

Ollivander greeted them when they returned to the shop, but he also noticed the exhausted look on Julian's face and suggested that he go to bed early. It was sound advice, and Julian was more than willing to wash up and head straight to sleep after such a long day. A great deal had happened in the span of those hours, from the capture of Peter Pettigrew to the discovery that the world was far more complicated than he had ever imagined. Altogether, Julian was mentally exhausted, and he knew it, so straight to bed he went.

Julian did not even realize until he woke up that he had slept until noon the next day, which happened to be Sunday and one of his free days. What startled him badly, however, was finding Dotty standing eagerly beside his bed, clearly waiting for a chance to serve. Helena burst into laughter when Julian nearly punched Dotty the instant he opened his eyes and saw the eager house-elf there. His fight or flight instincts were clearly tuned almost entirely toward fighting, though the elf was fortunate he had stopped his fist in time because he had not been holding back.

Dotty had carried out Julian's order, however, and was now dressed in a blue and silver silk robe with the Ravenclaw family crest stitched on the front. After getting dressed, Julian went out to greet Ollivander in the shop, a little embarrassed about having slept so late, but the old man only laughed it off. When Julian checked the newspaper, he raised an eyebrow at the headline {Ministry rights wrong! True criminal awaits trial!} 'Amazing how fast things move when you grease the wheels,' he thought with a sigh, not pleased that bribery had been necessary for justice to be done at all.

Even so, Julian read through the article and could only chuckle at how much credit Fudge had chosen to claim for himself instead of leaving it with the people actually responsible. The entire article could basically be summed up as Fudge doing everything important while everyone else received little more than passing honorable mentions. Dumbledore was not even included in the article despite his involvement, which Julian found absolutely hilarious. Still, the piece did include a few important details, such as Sirius's immediate release from Azkaban and the scheduled date of Peter's trial. According to the paper, Sirius was currently at St. Mungo's receiving treatment for the effects of his decade-long imprisonment.
