The next morning I asked Daniel casually.
"Did Vanessa call you last night?"
He paused.
Just for a second.
Then he laughed.
"No. Why would she call me?"
The lie was smooth.
Too smooth.
Later that afternoon Vanessa texted me.
"Hey girl, sorry I slept early last night."
My stomach dropped.
The exact same lie.
At that moment something inside me cracked.
They were hiding something.
Together.
And suddenly the situation felt much bigger than I first imagined.
Why would they both lie about the same thing?
