Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 — Stepping Beyond the Reflection

Aiden did not sleep that night.

He remained in the attic, seated on the wooden floor, staring at the antique mirror that now stood like a silent gate awaiting his decision. The silver glow along its carved frame had dimmed, but the surface of the glass still shimmered faintly—as if another world breathed just beyond it.

When he stepped closer, the carvings began to glow again.

This time, the light was steady. Controlled.

Then something impossible happened.

Words began to form across the surface of the mirror.

They were not reflections. Not projections. The letters appeared as if written by invisible hands, glowing softly against the glass. The script was unfamiliar—curved and angular at once, like ancient runes shaped from starlight.

And yet, as Aiden stared at them, he understood.

Not because he could read the symbols—but because the meaning echoed directly inside his mind.

"The Gate opens only to one who holds Resonance."

"Step forward without hesitation."

"Intent is the key."

"To return, touch your reflection and call your name."

Aiden's breath caught.

"Resonance…?" he whispered.

This was no hallucination. No trick of exhaustion. The mirror was giving him instructions—clear, deliberate instructions.

It was inviting him.

And it was telling him how to come back.

His hands trembled. If he entered, there was no guarantee of safety. No assurance he would survive. But deep inside his chest, something pulsed in response to the mirror's light—an invisible thread tightening between his heartbeat and whatever lay beyond the glass.

All his life, he had read about adventures.

Now, adventure was reading him.

He stood there for a long moment, logic and fear battling curiosity and longing. Finally, he exhaled slowly.

"If this is madness," he murmured, "then I'm already too far gone."

He removed his gloves. Slipped his phone into his jacket pocket out of instinct, though he doubted it would work in another world. He considered bringing the flashlight, then shook his head.

If that world was real, he would face it with his own eyes.

He stepped closer.

The mirror's surface shifted once more, revealing the vast violet sky and three luminous moons. Wind moved across distant grasslands. The world beyond looked alive.

Aiden raised his hand.

His fingers pressed against the glass.

This time, it did not feel solid.

It yielded.

Like cool water.

His pulse thundered in his ears as he remembered the instruction.

Step forward without hesitation.

He closed his eyes.

And stepped.

The sensation was both falling and floating at once. Pressure surrounded him, like passing through a thin membrane between realities. Silver light flared around his vision. A low hum vibrated through his bones.

Then—

He hit the ground.

Air rushed into his lungs as he coughed, hands sinking into damp grass. The scent of wild earth filled his senses—sharper, richer than anything back home.

Slowly, he lifted his head.

A vast violet sky stretched above him.

Three moons gleamed overhead.

He was truly there.

Rolling plains of tall grass extended endlessly in every direction, rippling under the wind like waves upon a green ocean. Distant mountains stood dark against the horizon.

"I made it…" he breathed.

The ground trembled.

At first, faintly.

Then stronger.

Aiden frowned and turned his head.

Through the swaying grass, massive shapes emerged at terrifying speed.

A herd of bison.

But not the kind he had seen in documentaries.

These creatures were enormous—twice the size of any earthly bison. Muscles rippled beneath dark hides. Their horns were long and curved like crescent blades, sharp and menacing. Their eyes glowed faintly beneath the moonlight.

And they were charging straight toward him.

Time seemed to slow.

"What—?!"

The thunder of hooves shook the earth. Dust and grass erupted into the air. The sound was deafening.

Aiden froze for half a second too long.

Then instinct took over.

He ran.

The tall grass tangled around his legs, slowing him. His breath came in sharp bursts. The pounding hooves grew closer—far too close. Heat radiated from the massive bodies behind him.

One of the horned beasts leapt forward, its blade-like horn slicing the air inches from his back.

He stumbled.

Fell hard onto the ground.

A massive shadow swallowed him.

Aiden threw his arms over his head, bracing for impact.

And in that instant of blind panic, he saw something flicker in the air before him—

A thin, transparent surface.

Like glass.

Within it—

His own reflection.

The world around him seemed to distort.

The charging herd was seconds away from crushing him.

And Aiden Chase realized, with his heart hammering violently in his chest—

His survival in this world would depend on more than courage.

It would depend on the power hidden within his reflection.
