Chapter 40 - Chapter 40:Shelter before the storm..

One Day Later...

Deep beneath the coast, the ancient sewer network echoed with the rapid fluttering of wings.

The elite vampire had not rested.

The journey back from Wizard City had taken nearly a full day, and despite the exhaustion creeping into his limbs, excitement drove him onward.

At last...

The hidden entrance to the Vampire Court appeared.

Stone doors parted.

The vampire immediately dropped to one knee.

"My King."

The great chamber fell silent.

The Vampire King slowly looked toward him.

"You have returned."

"I have, my King."

"And?"the king asked

The elite vampire lifted his head.

"I found information regarding the Lightning Wizard."

Even the other members of the court turned their attention toward him.

The vampire recounted everything.

The bounty.

The shapeshifter's story.

The severed arm.

The impossible regeneration.

The multiple magical disciplines.

The mysterious cult beneath Wizard City that was interested in the lightning wizard .

Not once did the Vampire King interrupt.

He simply listened.

Patiently.

When the report ended, silence filled the chamber once more.

Then...

A slow smile spread across the lion-faced king's muzzle.

"This is..Interesting."

Very interesting."

The Fool tilted his head.

"So we eat the wizard?"

The Vampire King ignored him.

Instead, he began pacing slowly around the chamber.

"Our enemy possesses lightning..."

"...storm magic..."

"...adaptive traits ..."

"...regeneration."

He paused.

"And yet..."

"...someone else has already begun preparing his defeat."

The Empress folded her arms.

"The cult."

"Yes."

"based on the information, they do not seek to kill him."

"They seek to imprison him."

The Moon spoke softly from the darkness.

"...which also removes him from our path."

The Vampire King nodded.

"Our goals are... temporarily aligned."

He stopped walking.

"There is no reason to fight another hunter..."

"...if they are already hunting the same prey."

The chamber grew thoughtful.

The Fool scratched his head.

"So..."

"...friends with the pointy hats ?"

The Vampire King gave him a flat stare.

"No you lovable idiot ."

"More like, Useful pawns ."

"There is a difference."

A few members of the court chuckled quietly.

The king turned back toward the kneeling elite.

"You have served well."

The vampire lowered himself even further.

"It is my honor."

"You have earned my praise."

The elites cold heart nearly stopped.

Recognition from the King himself was exceedingly rare.

Hope flared inside him.

Perhaps...

One day...

He could stand among the Court.

The Vampire King continued.

"I have another task."

"I await your command."

"Return to Wizard City."

The elite looked up.

"But this time..."

"...forget the Lightning Wizard."

"Learn everything you can..."

"...about the cult."

"Who leads them."

"What they truly want."

"And whether they can really become our ..."

"...temporary allies."

The elite bowed deeply.

"It shall be done."

Without another word, he dissolved into a swarm of bats that disappeared into the ancient tunnels once again.

The Vampire King watched him leave.

Then quietly murmured to himself,

"Sometimes..."

"...the wisest predator lets another weaken the prey first."

Meanwhile...

Far inland...

The afternoon sun shone warmly over endless grasslands.

For the first time in days...

There was peace.

Sam walked at an easy pace.

Elena rested comfortably in his arms.

Although she insisted she could walk, Sam simply smiled and refused.

"You need your strength."

"I can still walk you know ." she said in fake anger

"I know."Sam replied..

"So put me down then ." she said while kicking her legs playfully..

"No."

She sighed dramatically before resting her head against his shoulder anyway.

"...you're stubborn."

"So I've been told."

She smiled.

Ahead of them, the children laughed as they chased each other through the tall grass.

Their laughter drifted on the wind.

A sound Sam hadn't realized he had missed until now.

He watched them quietly.

A small smile appeared.

He would protect this.

No matter what.

Nearly an hour later...

An old building emerged on the horizon.

Its roof had partially collapsed.

Vines climbed the cracked stone walls.

Broken windows stared like empty eyes.

Sam carefully set Elena down.

"I'll check it first."

She nodded.

"Be careful."

He drew the Demon Eye Sword and entered.

Inside...

Silence.

Dust floated lazily through shafts of afternoon light.

Then...

Bodies.

Several soldiers lay scattered across the rooms.

Uniforms faded.

Weapons rusted.

None had been disturbed.

Sam crouched beside one.

The wounds...

Were strange.

No bite marks.

No bullet holes.

No obvious burns.

Only deep, clean cuts that seemed almost... unnatural.

He frowned.

"...What happened here?"

He searched the building briefly.

Nothing moved.

Nothing breathed.

Nothing remained except silence.

After another careful sweep, he relaxed slightly.

"Empty."

He stepped outside.

With a quiet wave of his hand, earth magic answered.

The ground softened.

Several graves slowly opened.

One by one, Sam carried the fallen soldiers outside and laid them to rest.

He covered each grave respectfully.

No speeches.

Just quiet dignity.

When the last mound of earth settled, he bowed his head briefly.

"Rest in peace and stuff ."

The building itself needed work.

Large cracks weakened the walls.

Support beams had rotted.

Sam placed both hands against the stone.

Earth mana flowed outward.

Rubble shifted.

Broken foundations fused together.

Collapsed walls slowly straightened.

Cracks sealed.

It wasn't perfect.

But it was safe.

Far safer than before.

When he finished, he stepped back, breathing lightly.

"...That'll do."

He waved toward the others.

"You can come in now ."

The children rushed inside immediately.

Their eyes lit up.

"It's huge!"

"We have so much room!"

Elena walked in more slowly, looking around with quiet amazement.

"You fixed all this?"

Sam rubbed the back of his neck.

"...Mostly."

The inside still felt empty.

So he tried something new.

Using earth magic, he slowly shaped the floor.

The first attempt collapsed.

The second looked like a pile of rocks.

The children giggled.

The third...

Actually resembled a large couch.

Uneven.

A little lumpy.

But comfortable.

Sam stared at it.

"...Close enough."

Elena laughed softly.

"I've seen worse furniture."

The children immediately climbed onto it.

"It's soft!"

"Well..."

"Soft-ish."

Sam chuckled.

"I'll make it better."

He grabbed his survival backpack .

"I'm going to collect more wood."

"And straw."

"So we can make this more comfortable."

Elena nodded.

"We'll clean up while you're gone."

Sam looked at them one last time.

The children already pretending the couch was a fortress.

Elena smiling as she watched them.

It felt...

Almost normal.

Almost like home.

He stepped outside into the golden afternoon, heading toward the nearby woodland in search of firewood and dry straw, unaware that the strange wounds on the soldiers he had buried were not made by vampires, mutants, or wizards...

Something else had passed through this place long before his family arrived.

And somewhere in the tall grass beyond the treeline...

Something was watching the newly repaired shelter in complete silence.
