Chapter 41 - Chapter 41 :The unknown in the storm

The afternoon drifted quietly toward evening.

The golden light that had bathed the grasslands slowly deepened into warm amber.

Sam moved through the nearby woodland in silence.

The forest wasn't particularly dense, but enough old trees had survived the Mushroom War to provide plenty of dry timber.

Thud.

One tree fell.

Then another.

He split them into manageable lengths with the side of his Demon Eye Sword before stacking them neatly.

After collecting enough firewood for several weeks, he turned his attention to the tall grass growing in the nearby fields.

With a thought...

His Intermediate Shapeshifting activated.

Bones shifted painlessly.

Muscles expanded.

His right hand enlarged until it was nearly the size of a wagon.

The fingers widened into powerful scoops.

"...This is actually useful."

He chuckled to himself.

With only a few sweeping motions, enormous bundles of dry straw collected inside his oversized hand.

He compressed everything carefully so nothing would scatter in the wind.

Then allowed his hand to shrink back to normal.

The gathered straw remained tied together with vines he'd quickly woven into rope.

"...Convenient."

The trait was becoming more natural every day.

Not just useful in combat.

Useful for living.

As he walked back toward the shelter...

The sun dipped lower.

Long shadows stretched across the ruined fields.

Crickets slowly began singing.

A cool breeze rolled across the grass.

Sam paused atop a small hill overlooking the repaired building in the distance.

Smoke already drifted lazily from its chimney.

Elena must have managed to light a small fire.

A faint smile appeared.

"...Home..."

The word still felt strange.

But...

Not unpleasant.

He set the wood down beside an old stone and finally allowed himself to relax.

"...Status."

The familiar blue screen unfolded before him.

Sam stared at the final line for a long time.

His smile faded.

"...Again..."

He closed the screen with a flick of his hand.

The system rarely displayed hidden warnings.

When it did...

They were never meaningless.

The breeze shifted.

Carrying with it the scent of burning firewood...

Fresh straw...

And Elena's cooking.

His stomach growled.

He laughed quietly.

"...Guess that's enough worrying for today."

Picking up the enormous bundles of wood and straw with ease, Sam turned toward the repaired shelter.

Behind him, the last rays of sunlight disappeared beyond the horizon.

Ahead of him...

A warm fire.

A waiting family.

And one peaceful evening

Before the next storm inevitably arrived.

A few minutes of walking later..

The old building stood peacefully beneath the fading evening sky.

Its cracked stone walls, now reinforced by Sam's earth magic, caught the flickering glow of the firelight leaking through broken windows.

The wind had calmed.

Only the distant chirping of insects and the occasional rustle of tall grass disturbed the silence.

Sam nudged the repaired wooden door open with his shoulder.

His arms were full.

A huge bundle of split firewood rested across one shoulder while an equally impressive bundle of dry straw was tucked beneath the other.

He stepped inside.

Warmth greeted him immediately.

The children had already claimed the large couch-like structure he had painstakingly shaped from earth earlier. Elena sat between them, wrapped in one of the blankets, the orange light from the fire dancing softly across her face.

For just a second...

Sam simply stood there.

Watching.

It was such an ordinary sight.

One he had almost forgotten could exist.

A family gathered around a fire.

No monsters.

No lightning.

No bloody fangs .

Just people.

His people.

A small smile found its way onto his face.

"...Looks comfortable."

Lilly grinned.

"It got softer!"

"The straw helped!" her brother added proudly.

Sam laughed.

"I haven't even brought the new straw inside yet."

"Oh..."

Daniel scratched his head sheepishly.

"...then maybe we just got used to it."

Sam chuckled as he set the heavy bundles down beside the wall with a dull thump.

He carefully spread the fresh straw beneath the blankets, adjusting the couch until it became noticeably softer.

Elena tested it by sitting down again.

Her eyebrows rose.

"...That's actually comfortable."

"I'll take that as a compliment."

"It is."

She smiled warmly.

Sam opened the worn survivor's backpack that the system had preserved in pristine condition.

One by one, supplies appeared.

Wrapped smoked meat.

Dried venison.

Slices of cured beef.

Fresh bread that somehow remained warm.

Small cloth bags of dried fruit.

Several bottles of clean water.

The children's eyes grew wider with each item.

"...Whoa..."

"That's a lot of meat ."Daniel said excited..

Sam chuckled.

"I've been saving it."

He handed everyone a portion before taking one for himself.

The little room quickly filled with the comforting sounds of people eating after a long journey.

Firewood crackled.

Bread tore apart.

Someone quietly sighed in satisfaction.

For a little while...

The ruined world outside ceased to exist.

Beyond the Firelight...

Outside...

The grass swayed gently.

The treeline stood motionless against the darkening sky.

Then

Two red eyes opened.

Watching.

A figure stood unnaturally still among the trees.

It was impossibly tall.

Its skin was a sickly grey, stretched tightly across a gaunt frame.

Its arms hung almost to the ground.

Each finger ended in unnaturally thin claws that gleamed like polished surgical blades.

It did not breathe.

It did not blink.

It simply watched the repaired shelter.

Then—

One slow step.

Not a twig snapped.

Another.

Its movements were so quiet that even the evening insects continued singing, unaware that something had entered their forest.

The creature tilted its head toward the warm glow spilling from the windows.

Watching.

Waiting.

Patient.

Back Inside

Elena had finished her first helping.

Then reached for another.

And another.

The children exchanged amused glances.

Then Lilly finally puffed out her cheeks.

"Mom..."

Elena looked up innocently.

"...Hmm?"

"You're eating all the meat."

"I am not."

"You totally are!"

Her brother counted dramatically on his fingers.

"That's your... fourth piece."

"It's fifth," his sister corrected.

Elena blinked.

"...Really?"

She looked down at the empty wooden plate.

"...Oh."

A blush spread across her cheeks.

"I didn't even notice."

Sam couldn't hold back his laughter.

A genuine, relaxed laugh.

"I think I know why."

Elena looked at him knowingly.

"...You're going to tease me, aren't you?"

He shook his head, still smiling.

"I wouldn't dare."

She raised an eyebrow.

"You smiled first."

"I did."

"And?"

He glanced gently toward her stomach.

"I've read enough to guess."

"The baby probably isn't letting you ignore your appetite."

Elena instinctively rested a hand over her belly.

Her expression softened immediately.

"...Maybe."

Lilly looked between them.

"So... does that mean the baby's hungry too?"

Sam nodded.

"Growing takes a lot of energy."

Daniel looked amazed.

"So my little brother or sister is already eating our food?"

Elena laughed.

"I'll make sure they apologize after they're born."

The room erupted into soft laughter.

For a few precious minutes...

The fire burned warmly.

The children smiled.

Elena leaned comfortably against Sam's shoulder.

And outside, unnoticed beyond the circle of firelight...

The tall grey figure crept one silent step closer, its crimson eyes never leaving the shelter. The peaceful warmth inside and the unnatural stillness outside seemed separated by nothing more than a thin wall of stone—and whatever would happen next depended on which reached the other first.
