Chapter 7 - He watches without knowing

The music wing of St. Aurelius Elite Academy was quieter than the rest of the campus, especially during the late afternoon hours when most students were still in their final classes.

Elena Rivera preferred it that way.

The silence made it easier to think.

She sat alone in one of the smaller practice rooms, the grand piano in front of her reflecting the soft overhead lights. Her notebook lay open beside the keyboard, the unfinished melody from yesterday still staring back at her.

She had tried to ignore it all morning.

But the conversation in the library kept replaying in her mind.

You wrote this?

It doesn't sound unfinished.

Adrian Volkov's voice had been calmer than she expected.

Not cold.

Not cruel.

Just quiet.

Which somehow made it harder to forget.

Elena shook her head slightly and placed her fingers on the keys.

The melody began slowly.

Soft notes filled the small practice room, flowing gently through the slightly open door and into the quiet hallway outside.

Each note felt more certain now.

More complete.

She played the first section carefully before pausing to adjust a few notes in her notebook.

Then she continued.

Outside the music wing, Adrian Volkov walked down the hallway with Lucas Petrov beside him.

"You're avoiding the business seminar again," Lucas said casually.

Adrian didn't respond.

Lucas glanced at him.

"You know your father's assistant will report it."

Adrian's expression remained unchanged.

"I'll deal with it."

Lucas sighed dramatically.

"You're unbelievably calm for someone who just skipped a lecture about running a billion-dollar empire."

They turned the corner leading toward the main staircase.

Then Adrian stopped.

Lucas nearly walked into him.

"What now?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because he had heard it again.

A piano.

Soft.

Familiar.

The sound drifted gently through the quiet corridor, slipping into the silence like a memory.

Lucas listened for a moment.

"Well," he said slowly, "that's definitely her."

Adrian stood still.

He didn't move closer.

He didn't open the practice room door.

He simply remained in the hallway, listening.

Inside the room, Elena continued playing.

The melody from her notebook slowly grew into something fuller.

More confident.

It still carried a softness, but the notes now moved with purpose.

As if the music itself was beginning to understand where it wanted to go.

Adrian leaned slightly against the wall, arms loosely crossed.

His eyes remained on the floor ahead of him, but his attention was entirely on the music.

Lucas watched him carefully.

"You're not even going to look?" Lucas asked quietly.

Adrian's voice was calm.

"I know who it is."

Lucas smirked.

"That's not what I meant."

But Adrian didn't respond.

He stayed exactly where he was.

Listening.

The melody shifted slightly.

A new progression.

Adrian's brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.

Something about the sequence felt different.

Like a question waiting for an answer.

Inside the practice room, Elena stopped playing again.

She scribbled a few more notes into her notebook before trying the passage one more time.

This time the melody flowed smoothly from beginning to end.

She smiled faintly.

It finally felt right.

Outside in the hallway, Adrian pushed himself away from the wall.

Lucas raised an eyebrow.

"Leaving already?"

"Yes."

Lucas glanced toward the practice room door.

"You know she has no idea you're standing out here every time she plays."

Adrian didn't look back.

"That's fine."

Lucas chuckled quietly as they walked away.

"You're a strange man, Adrian Volkov."

Adrian said nothing.

But the melody followed him down the hallway.

Inside the practice room, Elena closed her notebook and stretched her fingers slightly.

For the first time since writing the piece, the melody felt complete.

Satisfied, she packed her music sheets back into her folder.

She stepped out into the hallway a few minutes later.

It was completely empty.

Quiet.

She walked down the corridor toward the stairs, unaware that someone had been standing there just moments before.

Unaware that someone had been listening.

Across the academy grounds, Adrian stepped outside into the cool evening air.

Lucas walked beside him.

"You know," Lucas said thoughtfully, "most people would just walk into the room and talk to her."

Adrian stopped near the courtyard fountain.

The sound of running water filled the space between them.

Lucas waited.

Adrian's voice finally came.

Quiet.

"She plays like she means it."

Lucas studied him.

"That's not an answer."

Adrian looked out across the empty courtyard.

"No," he said calmly.

"It isn't."

Because the truth was something Adrian Volkov hadn't admitted even to himself yet.

He kept listening to Elena Rivera's music.

And he still didn't fully understand why.
