Chapter 1 - Chapter 1. The Unexpected Return

The city of Kintara glittered beneath the descending aircraft like a crown of light.

From the oval window of the private jet, Alessia Kane watched the skyline grow closer, the familiar towers piercing through the evening haze. Most people looked at the city and saw ambition.

Alessia saw responsibility.

At twenty-eight, she was the CEO of Kane Luxe Group, one of the fastest-growing luxury cosmetics companies in the world. Investors admired her brilliance. Rivals feared her precision. The media loved calling her the untouchable heiress.

But at this exact moment, Alessia Kane was simply tired.

The business trip to Zahara Coast had been meant to last another two days. Meetings with suppliers, a product launch consultation, and a luxury resort collaboration were all scheduled neatly in her calendar.

Until a sudden storm cancelled half the flights and forced the remaining meetings to be postponed.

So Alessia had done what she always did when plans changed.

She adapted.

Now her jet was descending toward Kintara International Airport, hours earlier than anyone expected.

Even Ethan.

A faint smile touched her lips at the thought.

Ethan Blake had been unusually busy lately. Or at least that was what he claimed whenever she asked why he couldn't meet her for dinner or answer her late-night calls.

Work stress, he had said.

New clients.

Financial consultations.

Alessia had believed him. Or perhaps she had simply chosen not to question it.

Trust had always been difficult for her.

Growing up in the Kane family meant learning very early that wealth attracted more than admiration. It attracted greed, ambition, and carefully disguised intentions.

Yet Ethan had seemed different.

Charming.

Supportive.

Unintimidated by her success.

He never complained about her long hours or the endless meetings that came with running a global company. In fact, he had always told her how proud he was of her achievements.

That alone had felt rare.

The aircraft touched down smoothly on the runway.

Across the aisle, Alessia's assistant glanced up from her tablet.

"We've arrived earlier than expected, Miss Kane," she said. "Your driver is already waiting."

"Thank you, Clara."

The words came automatically.

Alessia slipped her phone from her handbag as the jet slowed along the runway. For a moment she considered sending Ethan a message.

I'm back.

But then another thought crossed her mind.

A surprise.

It had been weeks since they had spent real time together. Perhaps an unexpected visit would be nice.

The idea felt strangely exciting.

By the time Alessia stepped into the VIP terminal of the airport, the evening air of Kintara carried the faint scent of rain and city lights.

Her driver opened the door of the sleek black car waiting outside.

"Welcome back, Miss Kane."

"Thank you."

She slid into the back seat and gave a simple instruction.

"Silvercrest Heights."

The driver nodded.

The car pulled smoothly away from the airport.

Outside the window, Kintara City unfolded in glowing layers of glass towers and moving traffic. Billboards flickered across buildings in the Crown District, advertising luxury brands and upcoming events.

Somewhere among them stood Kane Luxe Tower, the headquarters she would return to tomorrow morning.

But tonight, she had no interest in business.

Tonight she was simply a woman going to see the man she loved.

Across the city, Ethan Blake was laughing.

He lounged comfortably in the centre of his stylish apartment living room, a half-empty bottle of expensive wine resting on the coffee table.

The apartment itself was beautiful.

Modern.

Elegant.

Expensive.

Every single item inside it had been paid for by Alessia Kane.

Ethan had never mentioned that detail to her.

Instead he had carefully allowed her to believe he was doing well financially on his own.

The woman sitting beside him swirled the wine in her glass.

"So," she said with a curious smile, "how long are you planning to keep pretending with the billionaire girlfriend?"

Ethan leaned back against the sofa.

"As long as it keeps working."

She laughed.

"You're unbelievable."

"No," Ethan replied casually, lifting his glass. "I'm smart."

His tone carried no guilt. No hesitation.

"Alessia trusts me," he continued. "And people like her always think they're too intelligent to be fooled."

The woman raised an eyebrow.

"And when she finds out?"

Ethan scoffed.

"She won't."

He took another drink before adding calmly,

"And even if she does… it won't matter."

The black car glided into Silvercrest Heights, the most exclusive residential neighbourhood in Kintara City.

Tall luxury buildings rose quietly along the tree-lined streets.

Alessia watched the familiar scenery pass by, her thoughts drifting back to Ethan.

She had supported him for almost two years.

At first it had been small things.

Helping with rent when his consulting business struggled.

Paying for dinners.

Later, the support had grown bigger.

Investments.

Travel.

Opportunities.

But she had never once considered it a burden.

If anything, she had believed she was helping someone she cared about build a future.

The car slowed to a stop outside Ethan's apartment building.

"Would you like me to wait, Miss Kane?" the driver asked.

"No," she said softly. "I'll call when I'm ready to leave."

The driver nodded.

Alessia stepped out and walked toward the entrance.

The lobby lights glowed warmly as she entered.

She had visited this building many times before. The receptionist greeted her politely as she passed.

The elevator ride to Ethan's floor felt strangely quiet.

Perhaps it was simply the late hour.

Or perhaps something deeper stirred in the back of her mind.

A feeling she couldn't quite name.

The elevator doors slid open.

The hallway outside was silent.

Alessia walked toward Ethan's apartment and stopped at the door.

For a moment she considered knocking.

Then she smiled to herself and used the spare key he had once insisted she keep.

The door unlocked quietly.

Inside, the apartment lights were on.

She stepped in softly.

And then she heard it.

A woman's laughter.

It floated from the direction of Ethan's bedroom.

Alessia froze.

The sound was unmistakable.

Not a television.

Not a phone call.

A woman.

Laughing.

And Ethan's voice followed.
