Chapter 1 - Moonlight on Broken Wings

The town of Silverpine was quiet—too quiet for a place with so many strange stories.

Every full moon, the people of Silverpine locked their doors early. Windows were shut, curtains drawn tight. No one walked outside after midnight. They said the moonlight revealed something that shouldn't be seen.

Sixteen-year-old Mira had heard the rumors her whole life. But rumors didn't scare her.

What scared her was the sound she heard that night.

A faint cry echoed through the forest behind her house. It was soft and broken, like someone calling for help. Mira looked at the glowing full moon outside her window and hesitated.

It's probably nothing, she told herself.

But the cry came again.

Curiosity pulled her outside.

The forest looked different under the moonlight. The trees cast long silver shadows across the ground, and the air felt colder than usual. Mira followed the sound deeper between the trees until she reached a small clearing.

That's when she saw it.

Something lay on the ground, half hidden by fallen leaves.

At first, Mira thought it was a bird. But as she stepped closer, she froze.

It was a statue.

A stone statue of a winged figure.

Its wings were large and beautiful—but both were cracked and broken. Pieces of stone feathers lay scattered around it.

Mira frowned. She had lived near this forest for years and had never seen this statue before.

Then she noticed something strange.

The cracks in the wings were glowing faintly in the moonlight.

Suddenly, the same soft cry echoed again.

But this time, it came from the statue.

Mira's heart pounded. She stepped back, but curiosity kept her from running.

"Hello?" she whispered.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the moonlight grew brighter, shining directly onto the statue's broken wings.

A low whisper filled the air.

"Help… me…"

Mira spun around, but no one was there.

The voice came from the statue.

Before she could react, a gust of cold wind swept through the clearing. The stone feathers on the ground began to tremble.

One by one, they slowly lifted into the air.

Mira watched in shock as the pieces floated toward the broken wings, fitting back into place like a puzzle.

But one piece was missing.

The statue suddenly went still again.

The glowing cracks faded.

And the forest became silent.

Mira stood frozen, trying to understand what had just happened.

Then she noticed something glinting in the grass nearby.

She picked it up carefully.

It was a small stone feather.

Cold.

Smooth.

And glowing faintly under the moonlight.

Mira looked back at the statue.

The missing space in the wing was exactly the shape of the feather she held.

But before she could place it back, she heard footsteps behind her.

Slow.

Heavy.

Someone else was in the forest.

A deep voice spoke from the darkness.

"Put the feather down," the stranger said.

Mira turned slowly.

A tall man stood at the edge of the clearing, his face hidden in shadow.

"You weren't supposed to find it."

The moonlight brightened above them.

And for a brief moment, Mira saw something terrifying behind the man—

A pair of massive broken wings spreading in the darkness. 🪽🌙
