Chapter 11 - Chapter 11 – Too Close

For a moment neither of them moved.

The ocean stretched dark and endless behind Luca, moonlight glimmering across the waves. Autumn could still feel the warmth of his fingers where he had tucked her hair behind her ear.

Her heart was beating far too fast.

"You're staring," she said quietly.

"So are you."

She looked away first.

The sand shifted under her feet as she stepped back slightly, putting a little space between them.

"That answer wasn't very convincing," she said.

"What answer?"

"The one where you said you're 'figuring it out.'"

Luca exhaled a small laugh.

"Honest though."

Autumn folded her arms loosely.

"You usually honest?"

"Not always."

"At least you admit it."

A shout echoed faintly from the bonfire behind them.

Music carried across the wind.

Luca glanced over his shoulder.

"They'll come looking eventually."

"Your fan club?"

He smirked.

"Something like that."

Autumn tilted her head.

"You don't seem very excited about going back."

"I'm not."

"Then why come?"

He looked back at her.

"You were here."

Her stomach flipped.

She tried to ignore it.

"That's not a very good reason."

"Seemed good enough to me."

The wind pushed through his dark hair again, making it fall across his eyes.

Autumn suddenly realized how close they still were.

Close enough she could hear his breathing.

Close enough that if either of them moved an inch—

She cleared her throat.

"We should probably head back."

"Probably."

Neither of them moved.
