Chapter 12 - The Intrusion

The clearing remained silent.

Wind moved slowly through the trees, rustling the leaves above, but the ground below told a very different story.

Deep gouges scarred the soil.

Broken branches littered the area.

Something large had passed through here—and it hadn't been careful about hiding its presence.

Marcus crouched beside one of the claw marks.

"This isn't normal," he said.

Victor nodded, studying the ground carefully.

"These tracks are fresh."

Aiden remained standing at the edge of the clearing, eyes scanning the treeline.

"This isn't part of the trial," he said calmly.

Kai already knew that.

Hybrid Vision Eyes were active.

Faint energy traces shimmered across the disturbed ground. They stretched deeper into the forest beyond the clearing.

Large.

Heavy.

And still warm.

Whatever had come through here hadn't passed long ago.

The system appeared.

Hidden Objective Updated

Forest Intrusion

Objective: Investigate the source of abnormal predator activity.

Reward: Unknown

A second message appeared immediately after.

Teamwork Bonus Triggered

Cooperative Combat Condition Active

Allies Detected: Members of the Great 17

Participation Rewards Multiplied

Kai read the notification calmly.

Whenever he fought beside members of the Great 17, the system increased the rewards dramatically.

It was designed that way.

Encouraging cooperation with the strongest fighters.

Marcus stood and rolled his shoulders.

"Tracks lead deeper," he said.

Victor glanced toward Aiden.

"What do you think?"

Aiden studied the ground again.

Then he nodded slightly.

"We follow carefully."

No hesitation.

No unnecessary talk.

The group moved forward together.

The forest became darker the farther they traveled.

Tall trees blocked most of the sunlight while twisted roots rose from the ground like natural barriers.

Hybrid Vision Eyes highlighted faint movement trails across the forest floor.

Kai noticed something else.

The smaller predator tracks had disappeared.

Every normal beast had fled this area.

Marcus noticed it too.

"Too quiet."

Victor nodded.

"Predators usually compete for territory."

Aiden spoke quietly.

"But when something stronger arrives…"

"They leave," Marcus finished.

A sudden cracking sound echoed from somewhere ahead.

The four of them stopped instantly.

Another crack.

Then something massive shifted behind the trees.

Marcus tightened his grip on his sword.

"Finally."

A large shadow moved between the trunks.

Then it stepped into the clearing.

The creature was enormous.

Nearly twice the size of the Thornback Stalker they had fought earlier.

Its body resembled a massive panther, but thick armored plates covered its back and shoulders.

Four curved horns extended from its skull.

And its eyes burned with a deep crimson glow.

Victor whispered quietly.

"Never seen one before."

Hybrid Vision Eyes activated fully.

Information slowly formed.

Unknown Beast Detected

Provisional Classification: Ironhorn Predator

Threat Level: Intermediate+

The creature growled low in its throat.

The sound vibrated through the ground beneath their feet.

Marcus grinned slightly.

"That thing's not small."

Aiden stepped forward calmly.

"Same formation."

Marcus moved to the front.

Victor shifted to the right flank.

Kai positioned himself opposite Victor.

The creature lowered its head.

Then it charged.

The ground shook with every step.

Marcus met it head-on.

Steel clashed against thick armor as Marcus's sword struck the creature's shoulder plate.

The Ironhorn slammed into him with brutal force.

Marcus slid backward several feet, boots digging into the soil.

"Strong," he muttered.

Victor attacked next.

His blade cut toward the creature's rear leg.

But the Ironhorn spun quickly.

Its tail smashed into Victor's guard, forcing him back.

Kai moved.

Hybrid Vision Eyes highlighted a glowing weakness beneath the creature's ribs.

He darted forward.

His sword struck the exposed joint between armor plates.

The blade sank in slightly.

The creature roared and twisted violently.

Its claw swung toward Kai's chest.

Kai stepped back just in time.

Aiden moved like lightning.

His sword flashed once across the creature's foreleg.

The strike was perfectly placed.

The Ironhorn staggered slightly.

Marcus immediately seized the moment.

He drove his sword downward with tremendous force.

The blade punched through the creature's shoulder armor.

The beast roared and thrashed wildly.

Victor returned to the attack.

His blade sliced across the creature's back leg again, weakening its balance.

Kai circled carefully.

Hybrid Vision Eyes tracked the creature's movements.

Muscle tension.

Energy flow.

Attack patterns.

The Ironhorn turned toward him suddenly.

Its jaws snapped forward.

Kai ducked beneath the bite and drove his blade deeper into the wound beneath its ribs.

The creature roared again.

But Aiden was already moving.

One precise strike across the neck.

The Ironhorn collapsed with a thunderous crash.

Silence followed.

Marcus exhaled slowly.

"That thing hit hard."

Victor crouched beside the body, examining the thick armor plates.

"Stronger than the Thornback."

Aiden wiped his blade clean.

"Still manageable."

Kai stood quietly.

The system appeared instantly.

Energy flowed through Kai's body.

The reward was far larger than his usual battles.

Exactly as the system promised.

Working alongside the Great 17 produced massive gains.

Marcus pulled his sword free from the creature's armor.

"Crystal should be inside," he said.

Victor nodded.

"Your kill," he told Marcus.

Marcus shrugged.

"Team effort."

But he still knelt and cut into the creature's chest.

After a moment he pulled out a glowing crystal.

Larger than the ones Kai had collected before.

Marcus held it briefly before placing it into a storage pouch.

Aiden scanned the surrounding forest.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"This wasn't the only one."

Victor looked up.

"You're sure?"

Aiden pointed toward the far trees.

More claw marks.

More tracks.

Kai had already seen them.

Hybrid Vision Eyes highlighted several massive footprints leading deeper into the trial forest.

Not one predator.

Multiple.

Marcus stood.

"Well that explains the disturbance."

Victor frowned.

"Several intermediate predators entering the trial grounds?"

Aiden shook his head slowly.

"No."

He pointed toward the largest set of tracks.

"These are different."

Kai focused his vision.

The new prints were enormous.

Much larger than the Ironhorn.

And far deeper.

Something even heavier had passed through here.

The system appeared again.

Marcus looked toward the deeper forest.

"So what now?"

Aiden's voice remained calm.

"We continue."

Victor nodded.

"Carefully."

Kai adjusted his grip on his sword.

Whatever was ahead—

It was bigger than anything they had faced so far.

And the system clearly wanted him to find it.

The four of them stepped deeper into the forest.

Behind them the body of the Ironhorn lay still in the clearing.
