Chapter 13 - The System Shop

Kai moved quietly through the forest, the body of the Ironhorn Predator left behind in the clearing, Marcus, Victor, and Aiden just a few meters ahead, scanning for any other disturbances. The forest was still dark under the thick canopy, but the energy traces left by the predators still shimmered faintly in Kai's vision. He kept his Hybrid Vision Eyes active, subtle enough that no one could tell.

The system appeared suddenly in front of him, a floating interface like a thin, luminous rectangle, just off his peripheral vision.

System Notification

User: Kai

Reward Points Collected: 153 RP

System Shop Unlocked

Access Shop to spend Reward Points on: Abilities, Stat Enhancements, Equipment, Evolution Progression

Kai blinked. He wasn't expecting it to appear this soon, not in the middle of an active investigation. He barely had time to absorb the Ironhorn Predator's crystal before the system was already alerting him.

"Uh… what's this?" he muttered under his breath. The others had already disappeared into the shadows, moving cautiously. He didn't want to draw attention by looking too surprised, but his heartbeat quickened.

The interface floated in the air, showing multiple tabs:

Abilities

Stats

Equipment

Transformations

Miscellaneous Items

Kai's fingers hovered in the air instinctively, though he didn't touch anything. The system could sense intention.

Transformations Tab

Apex Human Readiness (Locked) – Unlocks after 1500 XP and 10 intermediate+ hunts

Kai stared at the floating text. His eyes flicked between each option. The Hybrid Vision Eyes upgrade immediately caught his attention. If he spent RP here, his vision during hunts would become even sharper—maybe precise enough to see the energy flow inside even higher-tier beasts before he had to make a move.

He tapped the Abilities Tab mentally. The interface responded instantly.

Hybrid Vision Eyes Upgrade

Cost: 100 RP

Effect: Increases range and detail recognition. Allows detection of hidden weaknesses, energy flows, and subtle predator movements at extended distances.

Kai hesitated. Spending RP so early felt risky. But the idea of seeing more without relying solely on intuition was tempting.

He thought carefully. This wasn't about greed; he had to train efficiently to stay alive in these hunts.

Yes, he confirmed mentally.

Immediately, the system reacted.

Hybrid Vision Eyes Upgraded

RP Remaining: 53

Enhanced sensory perception active.

A warm tingle spread across Kai's skull. It wasn't painful, but the way he perceived the forest shifted subtly. He could see faint energy currents around trees, smaller footprints glowing faintly, and the residual aura left by beasts that had passed through hours earlier.

Hybrid Vision Eyes didn't glow outward—no one else could see any difference. A subtle shadow passed over Kai's pupils, but anyone unfamiliar wouldn't notice.

Kai smiled faintly. The system wasn't done.

System Notification

New Quests Available

Intermediate Predator Sweep

Objective: Locate and defeat 3 intermediate-tier predators within the next 48 hours.

Reward: +150 XP, +50 RP, minor stat enhancements.

Crystal Collection Optimization

Objective: Absorb crystals from defeated beasts efficiently without alerting others to system integration.

Reward: +75 XP, +30 RP

Solo Combat Mastery

Objective: Successfully complete a hunt without any member of the Great 17 assisting.

Reward: +200 XP, +80 RP, unlock potential new ability.

Kai's mind raced. These were all different from each other, and the rewards were substantial.

He knew better than to rush them. The Intermediate Predator Sweep could be done with others if needed. The Solo Combat Mastery was more dangerous, but the reward points were tempting. And the system was emphasizing stealth and efficiency with the Crystal Collection Optimization.

Kai nodded slowly. He wasn't going to be reckless.

The others were still a few dozen meters ahead, unaware of the interface glowing softly in Kai's mind. He activated his Hybrid Vision Eyes quietly and scanned the forest ahead.

He spotted several faint red auras moving between the trees. Three intermediate predators, just like the quest specified.

Kai's fingers tightened on his sword. He didn't want to alert Marcus, Victor, or Aiden unnecessarily. Moving quietly, he gestured toward the first predator.

It was a thick-furred, four-legged beast, slightly larger than the Ironhorns they had faced previously, with curved claws that dug into the forest soil. Its eyes were alert, scanning for prey.

Hybrid Vision Eyes highlighted its muscle tension and energy flow. Kai could predict how it would move, where its weak spots were, and when it would strike.

He crept closer.

The first predator moved, sensing something small and light. Kai didn't react immediately. He let the creature approach the clearing, analyzing its stance, its intent.

At the precise moment, he struck.

The sword cut low and clean between a gap in its armored ribs. The predator roared and lunged, but Kai was already rolling to the side, drawing the blade up and slicing at the leg joint.

It staggered.

Kai was calm. Hybrid Vision Eyes told him the exact timing for each move. He struck again at the shoulder, then the side of its neck, finishing it before it could recover.

As the beast collapsed, Kai noticed a faint glow beneath its chest. The beast crystal.

He reached for it mentally. The system prompted him as always:

Beast Crystal Detected

Absorb Crystal? YES / NO

Kai hesitated briefly, thinking of Marcus, who would normally cut the crystal. But this one was his kill. He could absorb it without anyone noticing.

Yes.

White light coursed into his hand as the crystal dissolved into energy. Warmth spread through his arm and chest, followed by a faint surge in speed and reflexes.

System Notification

Crystal Absorbed

+10 XP

+3 RP

Minor physical enhancement

Kai suppressed a quiet exhale. No one noticed anything.

The other two predators hadn't reacted yet. Hybrid Vision Eyes allowed Kai to see their patterns before they knew he was there. One lunged, another circled from behind a tree.

He moved with precision, striking at weak points, cutting down the next beast, then the final one. By the time Marcus and the others arrived, Kai had already completed the Intermediate Predator Sweep without revealing his enhanced perception.

The system appeared again.

Quest Complete — Intermediate Predator Sweep

+150 XP

+50 RP

Minor Strength & Reflex Enhancement

Cooperative Bonus (for eventual participation with the Great 17 members nearby)

+25 RP

Kai smiled faintly, pocketing the mental confirmation of his points. 153 RP had now increased considerably with this sweep.

He didn't need to show anyone his efficiency. He preferred it that way. Subtle. Silent. Effective.

The others arrived slowly, looking slightly exasperated.

"Where did they go?" Marcus muttered, glancing around.

"Not sure," Victor replied. "I saw them run past the edge of the clearing, but…"

Kai merely shrugged. "Might have split off to hunt some smaller prey."

No one suspected a thing.

Hybrid Vision Eyes remained active, allowing Kai to continue analyzing the forest, energy flows, and predator behavior.

The system then triggered another notification:

New Ability Available — Crystal Assimilation

Allows user to absorb crystals after defeating beasts without manually cutting them out.

Requirement: Complete 5 solo intermediate+ hunts.

Kai's mind whirred. This would change everything for solo hunts. No more physical extraction, no extra motions to reveal his abilities.

He filed the information away, mentally noting the requirements.

The rest of the afternoon passed quietly. The Great 17 returned to the academy after clearing the forest. Kai moved alongside them, keeping calm. His RP and XP totals had jumped:

XP: 627 (after the sweep and solo hunt)

RP: 206 (including quest and cooperative bonuses)

The system had rewarded him generously without him needing to advertise his efficiency.

That evening, after classes, Kai returned to his dormitory. The system shop floated in front of him again, glowing softly.

He accessed it mentally. The Crystal Assimilation ability now showed as available for purchase with RP.

Cost: 80 RP

Effect: Automatically assimilate crystals after kills without physical handling

Kai frowned slightly. Spending 80 RP now would leave him with 126 RP, enough to upgrade Combat Instincts next.

He confirmed the purchase.

The system chimed quietly in acknowledgment.

Energy surged gently through him. He could already feel the subtle difference.

No one outside his dorm would notice, of course.

Kai smiled faintly, placing his sword carefully beside him.

The forest hunts, the system shop, the quests, the careful absorption of crystals—everything was shaping him slowly, deliberately.

And somewhere deep in the back of his mind, he wondered about the Apex Human quest he asked himself what even was a Apex Human do I have to fight a Apex Human beast or take it's crystal.

But that would wait.

For now, he had XP to earn, crystals to assimilate, and skills to refine.

The system had opened doors, but it would be his own strategy, subtlety, and timing that would allow him to walk through them safely.

Kai's eyes flicked briefly to the shop interface, then closed.

"Tomorrow," he murmured quietly, "I'll see what else I can get."

And silently, without anyone around noticing, he began planning his next hunts.

The forest was full of energy, and Kai knew it wouldn't wait for him.

Current Status:

XP: 627

RP: 126

Abilities: Hybrid Vision Eyes (upgraded), Crystal Assimilation

The system pulsed faintly in acknowledgment, as if reminding him that every move now mattered more than ever.

Kai leaned back on his bed, eyes closed.
