Chapter 21 - Whispers of the System

The battlefield was quiet now, but Sun Jun's mind was restless. The alliance with River Camp had held, Ma Tian was dead, and the raiders scattered. Yet victory brought no peace. Each time the system chimed, each time it rewarded him, he felt something deeper—like a hand guiding him, unseen but deliberate.

That night, as survivors slept, Sun Jun sat alone in the supermarket's upper floor. Sparks flickered across his fingertips, illuminating the cracked walls. He whispered to the system, though he knew it wasn't alive. "Why me? Why this world? Why thunder?"

For the first time, the system responded differently.

[Hidden Protocol Unlocked: Origin Inquiry]

- Transmigration Purpose: Trial of Ascension

- Apocalypse Status: Engineered Simulation

- Candidate Status: Sun Jun, Chosen Vessel

Sun Jun froze. His heart pounded. Engineered simulation? Trial of Ascension? He wasn't here by accident. He had been chosen.

---

The system continued:

[Explanation: Humanity faces extinction across countless worlds. Candidates are selected to undergo trials in apocalyptic realms. Success grants ascension—failure means oblivion.]

Sun Jun's breath caught. He remembered his small house, his lonely nights, his sudden death. It hadn't been fate—it had been design. He had been pulled into this apocalypse, tested like a pawn in a cosmic game.

Lin Yue found him hours later, his face pale, his eyes distant. "What happened?" she asked softly.

Sun Jun hesitated, then told her everything—the system's words, the revelation of a trial, the truth of his transmigration. Lin Yue listened silently, her expression unreadable.

Finally, she said, "So you're not just surviving. You're being tested. And if you succeed… you ascend."

Sun Jun nodded. "But if I fail, everything ends. Not just for me—for all of them." He gestured to the sleeping survivors below. "They're part of the trial. My choices decide their fate."

Lin Yue's Resolve

Lin Yue placed a hand on his shoulder. "Then we fight harder. We build stronger. If this is a trial, we'll pass it. Together."

Her words steadied him. For years, he had carried loneliness like a chain. Now, he carried responsibility—but he wasn't alone. Lin Yue's presence was a constant, grounding him when the storm threatened to consume him.

The System's Challenge

Days later, the system chimed again:

[New Quest: Investigate the Source of Mutation]

- Objective: Locate the origin of evolving monsters

- Reward: Thunder Ability Lv.7, System Insight

Sun Jun gathered Lin Yue, Li Feng, and Yu Lan. "The system wants me to find the source of the monsters. It's part of the trial. If we don't, they'll keep evolving until they overwhelm us."

Yu Lan frowned. "You speak of the system as if it's alive."

Sun Jun met her gaze. "It is. And it's watching us."

---

They set out, leaving the safety of the settlements. The city grew darker as they traveled, ruins twisted by strange growths. Monsters prowled, larger and more grotesque than before. Sun Jun's lightning struck them down, but each battle drained him.

At night, he dreamed of thunderstorms, of voices whispering in the static. Ascend… ascend… ascend. He woke drenched in sweat, his heart racing.

Lin Yue noticed his exhaustion. "You're pushing too hard," she said.

"I don't have a choice," Sun Jun replied. "The trial won't wait."

---

The Lab

After days of searching, they found it—a hidden laboratory beneath the ruins. Its walls were lined with shattered glass, broken machines, and corpses twisted by mutation. The air reeked of chemicals and death.

The system chimed:

[Objective Location Confirmed: Mutation Source]

Sun Jun stepped inside, lightning illuminating the darkness. He saw records scattered across the floor—notes of experiments, diagrams of monsters, data on human trials. His stomach churned.

"This isn't natural," Lin Yue whispered. "Someone made this."

Sun Jun nodded grimly. "The apocalypse was engineered. The monsters were created. And we're the test subjects."

---

Suddenly, the ground shook. A massive creature emerged from the shadows—a guardian of the lab, its body fused with steel and bone, its eyes glowing red. It roared, shaking the walls.

Sun Jun raised his hands, sparks surging. "This is the trial," he muttered. "This is the test."

The battle was brutal. The guardian's strength was overwhelming, its armor deflecting lightning. Lin Yue's traps slowed it, Yu Lan's blade struck deep, Li Feng rallied the warriors—but the creature endured.

Sun Jun gathered every spark within him, his veins glowing with electricity. He unleashed Thunderstorm Nova, a storm of lightning that engulfed the guardian. It shrieked, convulsed, and collapsed in smoke and ash.

The system chimed:

[Quest Complete: Investigate the Source of Mutation]

Reward: Thunder Ability Lv.7, System Insight Unlocked]

---

As the guardian fell, the system revealed more:

[Insight: The apocalypse is one of many trials across countless worlds. Candidates who succeed ascend to higher existence. Candidates who fail are erased. Sun Jun, your path is chosen. Continue, or perish.]

Sun Jun's chest heaved, his hands trembling. He looked at Lin Yue, Yu Lan, and Li Feng. "This isn't just survival. It's a test of humanity itself. And I'm the candidate."

Lin Yue's eyes blazed. "Then we'll make sure you succeed. Not just for you—for all of us."

Sun Jun nodded, sparks flickering across his body. The storm within him had found purpose.

---

That night, as they rested in the ruined lab, Sun Jun stared at the broken machines. He realized the truth: he wasn't just fighting monsters or raiders. He was fighting for ascension, for survival across worlds, for the chance to rise above mortality.

Thunder rumbled in the distance, echoing his resolve. The trial had only just begun, but Sun Jun was ready.
