Chapter 22 - The Burden of Truth

The ruins of the laboratory still haunted Sun Jun. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the twisted corpses, the broken machines, and the guardian's glowing eyes. The revelation weighed on him: the apocalypse wasn't natural—it was engineered. And he wasn't just surviving; he was being tested.

Back at the supermarket fortress, life carried on. Survivors repaired barricades, tended crops, and trained under Li Feng's guidance. Children laughed, their innocence a fragile flame in the darkness. Yet Sun Jun felt a storm brewing inside him. Should he tell them the truth? Should he reveal that their world was a trial, that their lives were part of an experiment?

Lin Yue noticed his silence. She found him one evening on the rooftop, lightning flickering faintly around his hands. "You're holding something back," she said softly.

Sun Jun hesitated. "The system told me… this apocalypse is a trial. I was chosen. If I succeed, I ascend. If I fail… everything ends."

Lin Yue's eyes widened, but she didn't flinch. "And you're wondering if you should tell them."

Sun Jun nodded. "If they know, they might lose hope. Or they might turn on me. But if I hide it, I'm lying to them. And they deserve the truth."

---

That night, the system chimed:

[New Ability Unlocked: Thunder Domain Lv.7]

- Create a field of lightning energy

- Enhances allies' strength within the domain

- Weakens enemies caught inside

Sun Jun tested it outside the fortress. Sparks surged from his body, spreading across the ground. A shimmering field of electricity enveloped the area, humming with power. Within it, his strikes grew sharper, faster, stronger. Even Lin Yue, standing nearby, felt her movements quicken, her senses sharpen.

"This isn't just your power anymore," she whispered. "It's ours."

Sun Jun realized the truth. His thunder wasn't meant to isolate him—it was meant to empower others. The trial wasn't about one person alone. It was about leading humanity to endure.

---

The next day, Sun Jun gathered the leaders—Lin Yue, Li Feng, Yu Lan, Dr. Han, and Grandfather Zhou. He told them everything: the system, the trial, the engineered apocalypse, the ascension.

Silence followed. Li Feng's jaw tightened. Yu Lan's eyes narrowed. Dr. Han rubbed his temples. Grandfather Zhou simply sighed.

Finally, Lin Yue spoke. "We've always known this world was broken. Now we know why. The question is—what do we do with this truth?"

Li Feng frowned. "If the people hear this, they'll panic. Some will lose hope. Others will worship you like a god. Either way, it will tear us apart."

Yu Lan crossed her arms. "But hiding it is dangerous. Secrets breed distrust. If they find out later, they'll turn on you."

Dr. Han nodded. "The truth is heavy. But perhaps it's necessary. If this is a trial, then we must all be part of it."

Grandfather Zhou smiled faintly. "Hope is fragile, but it is also strong. Give them the truth, and they will decide how to carry it."

---

That night, Sun Jun walked the fortress alone. He remembered his small house in his old world, the loneliness that had consumed him. He had never asked to lead, never asked to carry the fate of others. Yet here he was, holding the truth of existence itself.

Lin Yue found him, her voice gentle. "Whatever you decide, I'll stand with you. But remember—this isn't just your trial. It's ours."

Sun Jun looked at her, sparks fading from his hands. "Then tomorrow, they'll know."

---

The next morning, Sun Jun gathered the survivors. Dozens stood before him, their faces etched with fear, hope, and exhaustion. He took a deep breath, lightning flickering faintly around him.

"This world is not what it seems," he began. "The apocalypse was engineered. The monsters were created. And I… I was chosen. This is a trial. If we succeed, we ascend. If we fail, everything ends."

Gasps echoed. Whispers spread. Some survivors stared in awe, others in fear. A child clutched her mother's hand, eyes wide.

Sun Jun raised his voice. "I did not choose this. But I will not abandon you. My power is not mine alone—it is ours. Together, we will endure. Together, we will pass this trial."

He unleashed his Thunder Domain, sparks spreading across the ground. Survivors felt strength surge within them, their fear replaced with determination.

"This is not the end," Sun Jun said. "This is the beginning."

---

The fortress buzzed with emotion. Some survivors wept, others prayed, others trained harder than ever. Fear lingered, but so did hope. They knew the truth now, and though it was heavy, it gave them purpose.

Lin Yue stood beside Sun Jun, her eyes steady. "You did it," she whispered. "You gave them the truth. And they chose hope."

Sun Jun nodded, his chest heaving, his hands still crackling faintly. "Then we'll carry it together. Until the end."

Thunder rumbled in the distance, echoing his resolve. The storm was far from over, but now, it was shared.
