Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

The city was cloaked in a thick winter mist, streetlights casting a warm glow on the icy roads. Ava pulled her coat tighter around her shoulders, but the chill she felt wasn't just from the cold—it was from the weight of her worries. Her family's business was collapsing, debts were piling up, and her dreams of being a successful writer seemed to melt away like frost on a windowpane.

Her footsteps echoed softly on the empty street as she tried to focus on the rhythm, to keep her mind from spiraling. That's when a sleek black sedan slowed beside her. Reflexively, she stepped back. The car door opened, and out stepped a man who seemed to command the world around him.

Mihir.

Tall, impeccably dressed, and radiating confidence, his sharp gaze fixed on her with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat. "Ava," he said, his voice calm, controlled, yet impossible to ignore. "I have a proposal. Not just for you—but for your entire family."

Ava froze. Who was this man, and why was he speaking to her as though she was the key to solving some puzzle he alone could see?

"One year," he continued, "contract marriage. My terms, your terms. Everything in writing. Your family will have financial security, and you… you will keep your independence."

Ava blinked, certain she had misheard. Was this some cruel joke, or the start of a nightmare? But the seriousness in his eyes left no room for doubt.

"Why me?" she asked, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and curiosity.

"Because," Mihir said, stepping closer, "I want someone I don't fully know. Someone who brings both strength and vulnerability. And you… you are a mystery I am willing to challenge myself with."

A shiver ran down Ava's spine. The words sounded almost unreal, but her heart knew the truth—this was no ordinary offer.

From his pocket, Mihir drew a set of documents. Each page was crisp, meticulously organized. "Sign this contract," he said, placing them in her hands. "One year. You sign, your family is safe. You refuse, and consequences follow."

Ava's fingers trembled as she touched the paper. The weight of responsibility was crushing, pressing down on her chest. One signature could change everything—her family's future, her life, even her heart.

Just as she lifted her eyes to protest, a shadow moved at the edge of the fog. Something—or someone—was approaching fast. Ava's heart leapt into her throat. She glanced at Mihir, who stood motionless, but his eyes followed the movement with a sharp, almost predatory awareness.

Snowflakes swirled around them, catching the streetlight in tiny bursts of sparkle. The city felt suspended in a strange, surreal silence, as if time itself had paused to watch the moment unfold. Ava's pulse raced. This contract… it wasn't just about money. It wasn't just about survival. Something deeper, more dangerous, was waiting.

And then, the shadow emerged—a figure moving too quickly to recognize. Ava's breath caught. She instinctively stepped back, clutching the papers like a lifeline.

Mihir's voice, calm but commanding, cut through the tension. "Stay close to me," he said. Ava didn't question him. Something told her that for better or worse, she had just stepped into a world where everything she thought she knew about love, trust, and fate was about to change.
