Chapter 1 - CH1:THE PACT

Brookdale High had seen a lot of strange traditions over the years, but none quite like the one four seniors made on a quiet Friday night.

Jay, Marcus, Eli, and Noah had been best friends for almost a decade. They'd survived awkward middle school phases, terrible haircuts, brutal exams, and endless late-night gaming sessions in Jay's basement.

But there was one thing none of them had managed to survive.

Dating.

With graduation only two months away, the truth had become painfully obvious.

Not one of them had a girlfriend.

The realization hit during one of their usual hangouts. Rain tapped against the basement window while the four of them lounged around after losing yet another online match.

Eli sighed dramatically, dropping onto the couch.

"I refuse to believe," he said, staring at the ceiling, "that we're about to graduate as four completely girlfriendless losers."

Marcus chuckled. "Speak for yourself."

Jay leaned back in his chair. "Face it. We're cooked."

Noah, who was scrolling through his phone, suddenly grinned.

"You know what?" he said. "Let's make it interesting."

Jay raised an eyebrow. "That sentence has never ended well."

Noah stood up and pointed at all of them.

"If none of us has a girlfriend by the time we graduate… we commit to a pact."

Marcus crossed his arms. "What kind of pact?"

Noah's grin widened.

"We become sissies."

The room went silent.

Jay blinked. "You're joking."

"Nope," Noah said. "Think about it. If we're going to graduate single anyway, we might as well go all in on something ridiculous."

Eli slowly sat up, clearly intrigued.

"What exactly does that mean?" he asked.

Noah began listing things on his fingers.

"Makeovers. Dresses. Makeup. The whole aesthetic. No shame, no hiding. We own it."

Marcus burst out laughing.

"That's insane."

"Exactly," Noah said. "Which is why none of us will actually let it happen. Someone will get a girlfriend before graduation."

Jay leaned forward.

"And if we don't?"

Noah held out his hand in the center of the room.

"Then we keep our word."

Eli looked at the others, excitement slowly creeping onto his face.

"You know what?" he said. "I'm in."

Marcus shook his head but eventually sighed.

"This is the dumbest thing we've ever done… but fine."

Jay groaned.

"I can't believe I'm agreeing to this."

Finally, all eyes turned to Noah.

He smiled confidently.

"Graduation day decides our fate."

One by one, they stacked their hands together.

A pact sealed by stupidity, curiosity, and a little bit of fear.

What none of them realized was that the closer graduation got…

the more likely it seemed that none of them were going to escape it.

After the pact was made, the mood in Jay's basement completely changed.

At first, everyone laughed it off. It felt like one of those ridiculous things friends say late at night that no one ever takes seriously.

But the next Monday at school, reality hit.

Graduation was six weeks away.

And the pact suddenly didn't feel so funny anymore.

Jay was the first to bring it up again.

They were sitting at their usual lunch table when he leaned forward and whispered,

"So… are we actually doing this?"

Marcus nearly choked on his drink.

"Doing what?"

"You know what," Jay said. "The pact."

Noah leaned back in his chair like he was completely relaxed.

"Relax. One of us will get a girlfriend before graduation."

Eli looked around the cafeteria.

"You're all acting confident, but let's be honest… none of us have even had a date this year."

That part hurt.

Because it was true.

The next few weeks became what Noah later called "The Great Girlfriend Panic."

Suddenly, the four of them were trying things they had never done before.

Marcus started actually talking to girls in the gym instead of silently lifting weights.

Jay attempted to be more social instead of spending every afternoon gaming.

Eli joined extra theater rehearsals hoping to meet someone.

And Noah—well, Noah flirted with half the school.

Their group chat became chaotic.

Jay: "I talked to someone today."

Marcus: "Who?"

Jay: "The girl at the cafeteria register."

Marcus: "That doesn't count."

Noah: "Progress is progress."

Despite their efforts, nothing really changed.

Every Friday they met again in Jay's basement to report their progress.

Week 5 before graduation.

Nothing.

Week 4.

Still nothing.

Week 3.

Eli had a promising conversation with a girl from drama club… but she mentioned her boyfriend ten minutes later.

Marcus almost got a number at the gym but lost his confidence halfway through the conversation.

Jay got friend-zoned by someone he had liked for months.

Even Noah—the most confident of them all—had no real success.

Two weeks before graduation, the mood was different.

They sat in the basement again, but this time no one was joking.

Jay broke the silence.

"Guys… this might actually happen."

Marcus rubbed the back of his neck.

"You mean the pact?"

Noah nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

Eli looked strangely calm.

"You know… when we made it, I thought it was ridiculous."

"And now?" Jay asked.

Eli shrugged.

"Now I'm kind of curious."

Marcus laughed nervously.

"You're telling me you're actually considering going through with it?"

Eli grinned.

"A pact is a pact."

Jay pointed at Noah.

"This was your idea."

Noah smiled.

"Which means I'm definitely not backing out."

Marcus sighed.

"This is going to be the weirdest summer of our lives."

One week before graduation, they met again.

This time, there was no debate.

No excuses.

No progress.

Jay looked at the others.

"So… unless something insane happens in the next seven days…"

Noah finished the sentence.

"The pact activates."

They all stared at each other for a moment.

Then Eli slowly smiled.

"Guess we'd better start preparing."

Graduation arrived faster than any of them expected.

The football field behind Brookdale High was packed with chairs, families, cameras, and proud parents. Banners hung from the bleachers, and the stage was decorated with blue and silver ribbons.

For most seniors, the day was about celebrating the end of high school.

For Jay, Marcus, Eli, and Noah…

it was judgment day.

They met behind the bleachers before the ceremony started, wearing their blue graduation gowns.

Marcus looked around nervously.

"So… last chance."

Jay raised an eyebrow. "Last chance for what?"

"You know what," Marcus said. "If any of you suddenly have a girlfriend, now would be the perfect time to mention it."

Noah smirked.

"Nice try."

Eli folded his arms dramatically.

"I think we all know the truth by now."

Jay sighed.

"Yeah… we're all still single."

For a moment, none of them spoke.

Then Noah clapped his hands together.

"Well."

"Well what?" Marcus asked.

"Well… the pact stands."

Jay shook his head in disbelief.

"I can't believe we actually did this to ourselves."

Eli smiled.

"A promise is a promise."

Marcus pointed at Noah.

"You realize this was your idea."

"And you all agreed," Noah replied.

He held out his hand.

"Final confirmation."

Jay groaned but stepped forward anyway.

Marcus followed.

Eli placed his hand on top with a dramatic flourish.

Noah put his hand on the stack last.

"After tonight," he said, "we officially begin."

The ceremony passed in a blur.

Speeches, applause, names being called one by one.

When their names were announced, they walked across the stage like everyone else.

No one watching had any idea that the four of them had just lost a bet that would change their entire summer.

Later that night, they gathered one more time in Jay's basement.

Except this time, the mood was different.

High school was officially over.

No more chances to escape the pact.

Jay leaned back in his chair.

"So… what now?"

Eli pulled out his phone.

"I've been doing research."

Marcus looked concerned.

"That sentence worries me."

Eli ignored him.

"If we're going to do this, we should at least do it properly."

Noah nodded approvingly.

"Commitment."

Jay stared at them.

"You two are taking this way too seriously."

Marcus sighed.

"I still can't believe we're actually doing this."

Noah stood up.

"Guys."

They all looked at him.

"A pact only matters if you keep your word."

He smiled.

"And we're not backing out."

Jay slowly shook his head.

"This is going to be the weirdest summer of our lives."

Eli grinned.

"Oh, definitely."

Marcus rubbed his face.

"So… when do we start?"

Noah didn't hesitate.

"Tomorrow."

The four friends had no idea what they were getting themselves into.

But one thing was certain.

The pact had begun.

And none of them were turning back.
