Ashgrove was never loud after sunset. By the time the sky turned deep violet, most lanterns were already lit and the villagers had retreated indoors. Only the soft glow of windows and the distant chirping of crickets filled the quiet air.
Elara walked along the narrow dirt path toward her cottage, a small basket of herbs resting on her arm. The evening breeze carried the scent of pine and damp earth, calming as always. Yet tonight, something felt… wrong.
Too quiet. She stopped. The crickets had stopped singing.
Elara frowned and glanced toward the forest line that stretched dark and endless beyond the village fields. "Tessa was getting into my head," she murmured to herself. Still, her heart began to beat a little faster. A rustle sounded in the tall grass.
Elara froze.
"Hello?" she called cautiously. Nothing answered. She took another step forward.
Then—
A low growl rippled through the darkness.
Elara's breath caught. From the shadows beyond the field, two glowing eyes appeared.
Then another. And another.
Wolves. But they were wrong. Too large. Too silent.
Their bodies slipped from the darkness one by one, fur black as midnight and teeth glinting under the moonlight. Elara's heart pounded violently.
Slowly, she backed away. "Easy…" she whispered, though her voice trembled.
One of the creatures stepped forward. It was enormous, larger than any wolf she had ever seen. Its lips curled back, revealing rows of sharp teeth.
Then it lunged.
Elara screamed and ran. Her basket fell, herbs scattering across the path as her feet pounded against the dirt. The wolves chased her easily, their claws tearing through grass and soil. She could hear them gaining. Feel their hot breath behind her.
"Someone help!" she cried.
But the village houses were still too far. The lead wolf leapt. Elara stumbled and suddenly the forest exploded with a deafening snarl.
Something massive crashed between her and the wolves. She fell to the ground, gasping, scrambling backward.
A creature stood before her.
A wolf. But not like the others.
This one was enormous, towering, its fur dark silver under the moonlight. Its amber eyes burned like fire. The other wolves froze. A deep, furious growl rolled from the silver wolf's chest. The sound alone made the ground seem to tremble.
Then chaos erupted.
The silver wolf lunged forward with terrifying speed, slamming into the largest attacker. Teeth flashed. Claws slashed. The fight was brutal and fast. One wolf was thrown across the field. Another yelped and retreated.
Within seconds the attackers scattered, fleeing back into the forest with frightened whines.Silence returned.
Elara's chest rose and fell as she stared at the massive wolf standing in front of her.Its amber eyes locked onto hers. Something strange passed between them, Recognition. Connection.
The wolf took one slow step toward her. Elara's heart pounded even harder, yet oddly… she wasn't afraid anymore. Just confused.
"Did… did you save me?" she whispered.
The wolf tilted its head slightly. Then, from the shadows behind them, a twig snapped.
The wolf's ears twitched instantly. Danger again.
In one smooth movement the creature turned and vanished into the forest like smoke disappearing into darkness.
Elara stared after it, stunned.
Moments later lantern light flooded the path as villagers rushed toward her. "Elara!" Liam's voice shouted. He reached her first, helping her to her feet.
"What happened?" Tessa gasped, wide-eyed. Elara struggled to find the words. "There were wolves," she said slowly.
"But… another one came." "A bigger one."
"It chased them away."
The villagers exchanged uneasy glances. But none of them noticed the pair of amber eyes watching from the distant treeline. Kael stood hidden among the shadows, his chest still rising from the fight.
He hadn't planned to reveal himself.
Hadn't planned to interfere yet.
But when he saw the rival pack closing in on her…Instinct took over. His gaze softened slightly as he watched Elara being surrounded by worried villagers. Safe. For now.
Behind him, a familiar voice spoke quietly. "You just started a war." Kael turned to see Darius emerging from the trees. The beta crossed his arms. "That wasn't a hunting party," Darius said. "That was the Bloodfang Pack."
Kael's eyes darkened.
"I know." Darius glanced toward the village where Elara stood. "They're already searching for your mate."
Kael looked at her one last time before stepping back into the darkness. "Then they'll learn something tonight," he said coldly.
Darius raised an eyebrow, "What's that?"
Kael's voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. "That no one touches what belongs to me."
And far away in the village, Elara couldn't shake the feeling that the mysterious wolf hadn't just saved her life…
He had been watching her all along.
And somehow, She knew this was only the beginning.
