Vol 02: The Hunt │ Part 04: In Between
1
The first week in the Between was the hardest.
Kaelen had expected the new world to be a place of constant danger, of endless battles and desperate escapes. Instead, it was... quiet. The settlement was peaceful. The Rifters went about their daily lives. The Ravagers had not returned since Fenris's hunt.
But the quiet was not restful. It was oppressive.
Kaelen sat at the edge of the settlement, Fenris beside him, and stared at the twin moons. His mark pulsed beneath his tunic—six Kites, all waiting. The golden Artisan Kite was dormant, waiting for the forge. The crimson Combat Kite was hungry, waiting for battle. The silver Insight Kite was patient, waiting for understanding.
But the black Void Step Kite was different. It was ready. It had been waiting for him to push it further.
He reached for it.
2
The days blurred together.
Kaelen practiced Void Step every morning, every evening, every moment he could spare. He carried rocks across the settlement. He carried Lyra. He carried Zora. He carried Fenris. Each time, the distance grew longer. Each time, the shadows became more responsive.
By the end of the first week, he could carry all three of them across the entire settlement in a single step.
By the end of the second week, he could step through shadows that were not shadows—through the spaces between spaces, where light did not reach and time did not flow.
By the end of the third week, he could feel the void itself. Not as a hunger. As a home.
The third Void Step Kite was forming.
3
Lyra watched him practice, her journal open.
"You are getting faster," she observed. "You disappeared for almost a full minute."
Kaelen emerged from a shadow, breathing hard. "I was... exploring. The void. It is like a river. I can follow it."
"Follow it where?"
"I do not know." He touched his chest. "But I think I can find the Rift. Any rift. If I try hard enough."
Lyra wrote quickly. "That is Mastery. The third tier. You are almost there."
Kaelen smiled. It was a tired smile, but genuine.
"Almost."
4
The fourth week brought the breakthrough.
Kaelen was practicing alone, Fenris at his side, when he felt it—a shift in the void, a deepening of his connection. The third Void Step Kite pulsed in his chest, warm and complete.
He stepped into the shadow—and emerged on the other side of the valley.
Fenris was beside him, his violet patterns blazing.
You did it, the hound said through the bond.
Kaelen looked at his hands. The black Kite pulsed, steady and strong.
"I did it," he said.
He could cross rifts now. He could travel through the void itself.
He had mastered Void Step.
5
The next morning, Elder Amara came to him.
Her spiral patterns were glowing brighter than usual, and her face was grave.
"Kaelen," she said. "It is time."
"Time for what?"
Amara led him to her hut. A scroll lay unrolled on the mat, its symbols shifting and dancing.
"Time for the prophecy," she said. "Time for you to understand what you truly are."
6
Amara unrolled the scroll fully. The symbols shimmered, rearranging themselves into a pattern Kaelen could almost understand.
"This is the Prophecy of the Progenitors," she said. "It was written before the Grey Cabinet, before the Conclave, before the Foundation. It speaks of a time when the rifts will grow unstable, when the Between will bleed into the worlds beyond."
Kaelen leaned forward. "What does it say?"
Amara traced a finger along the symbols. "It says that when the rifts grow unstable, a Progenitor will rise. Not to close the rifts, but to choose. To decide whether the worlds remain separate or become one."
Kaelen felt the weight of her words. "Why the Rift? Why not the Between? Why not any of the other worlds?"
"Because the Rift is the nexus," Amara said. "It is the center of the web. Every world touches the Rift. Every rift leads to the Rift. The Between is the space between worlds, but the Rift is the anchor that holds them all together."
Lyra's eyes widened. "The Rift is the heart of everything."
"Yes. And the Progenitor is the guardian of that heart. The diamond on your chest—the frame, the Kites—it is not just a source of power. It is a key. A key to the nexus."
Kaelen touched his chest. The obsidian bird pulsed beneath his fingers.
"If someone else takes the Heart..." he began.
"They will claim the key. They will become the Progenitor in your place." Amara's voice was quiet, heavy. "But they will not protect the nexus. They will break it. They will use it to open doors to every world, to conquer everything. The Rift will collapse. Every world connected to it will suffer."
Kaelen felt the weight of her words. "How do I stop them?"
Amara looked at him, her spiral patterns pulsing once.
"There is an artifact," she said. "Forged by the first Progenitor, before the Grey Cabinet, before the Conclave. It is called the Void's Heart Core. It was designed to sever the connection between the Heart and the one who wields it."
Kaelen's hand went to his chest. "Where is it?"
"The Valley of Echoes. Three days east of here, beyond the Ravager lands." Amara's voice was quiet. "The path is dangerous. The valley is guarded by creatures that do not hunger for flesh. They hunger for memories, for identity. They will try to strip you of everything you are."
Kaelen felt Fenris press against his leg. Through the bond, he felt the hound's readiness, his determination.
"Then I will go," Kaelen said. "I will find the Void's Heart Core."
