Chapter 47 - Chapter 46: The Valley of Echoes

Vol 02: The Hunt │ Part 04: In Between

1

The journey to the Valley of Echoes took three days.

Kaelen walked at the front, Fenris beside him, the twin blades at his hips and the guinunting strapped across his back. The Void's Heart Core was still hidden, waiting to be found. Lyra followed close behind, her journal tucked away, her Mind Kite pulsing faintly. Zora scouted ahead, her cat eyes scanning the horizon.

The land changed as they walked. The grass gave way to rocky terrain, then to sparse trees with twisted, silver bark. The air grew colder, thinner.

Kaelen felt the presence of the Valley before he saw it—a weight in his chest, pressing against the void.

"Amara said the valley guards itself," Lyra said. "I wonder how."

"I think we are about to find out."

2

The Valley of Echoes opened before them.

It was a vast depression between two jagged peaks, filled with mist that shimmered with faint, silver light. The air hummed with a low, resonant frequency that seemed to vibrate in Kaelen's bones. The mist moved like it was alive, curling and shifting as if it were breathing.

Zora stopped at the edge. "I cannot see the bottom. The mist is too thick."

Kaelen reached out with the Insight Kite. The resonance was strange, layered—like a thousand voices whispering at once. He could feel the presence of something ancient, something hungry.

"Stay close," he said. "Do not lose sight of each other. And whatever you hear, remember—it is not real."

They descended into the mist.

3

The whispers began almost immediately.

They were soft at first, barely audible, snippets of conversations, fragments of memories. But as they walked deeper, the whispers grew louder, more insistent.

Kaelen heard his father's voice: You are not a son of House Valerius.

He shook his head, trying to focus.

Then he heard Thorne's voice: I didn't become a blacksmith for the heat, boy. I became one to melt the blood off my hands.

The whispers were pulling at him, trying to unmake him.

He forced himself to keep walking.

 4

The mist thickened without warning.

One moment, they could see each other, Kaelen, Lyra, Zora, Fenris, all of them close enough to touch each other. The next, the mist surged forward like a living wall, swallowing them whole. Kaelen reached for Lyra's hand, but his fingers closed on empty air.

"Lyra!" he shouted.

No answer. The mist absorbed his voice, muffling it into nothing.

He reached out with the Insight Kite—and felt nothing. The valley's resonance was too thick, too chaotic, drowning out everything. He could not feel Lyra. He could not feel Zora. He could not even feel Fenris.

He was alone.

5

Lyra stumbled through the mist, her hands outstretched.

"Kaelen! Zora! Fenris!"

Her voice echoed back at her—but the echo was wrong. It was not her own voice. It was her mother's voice, twisted and cruel.

Lyra. You are alone. You have always been alone.

Lyra reached for her Mind Kite, trying to sense the others. But the valley's resonance was too strong. It flooded her senses with noise—a thousand voices, a thousand thoughts, none of them hers. She could hear Kaelen's fear, Zora's grief, Fenris's confusion. But she could not find them. She could not reach them.

You are failing, her mother's voice echoed. You are always failing.

6

Zora was surrounded by figures.

Not just Calder. All of them. The Haven's residents—the children she had played with, the elders she had respected, the friends she had laughed with. They were all here, their faces twisted with pain and accusation.

You left us, they whispered. You ran. You let us die.

Zora's claws extended. "I did not leave you. I fought. I survived."

Survived? Calder's voice rose above the others. You survived while we burned. You survived while we died. You survived because you were too weak to save us.

Zora fell to her knees. "I tried. I tried to save you."

You did not try hard enough.

One by one, the figures stepped forward. Mara, the girl with scales on her arms. Seph, with his golden eyes. Jun, with his infectious laugh. Wren, with her truth-sense. Bram, with his wooden fingers.

They all reached for her.

You failed us, they whispered. You failed all of us.

7

Kaelen heard Zora's scream.

It cut through the mist, sharp and desperate. He ran toward it, but the mist shifted, twisted, leading him in circles. The valley was playing with him, testing him.

He stopped. Closed his eyes. Reached for the void.

The Insight Kite was useless here. The Combat Kite could not fight mist. But the Void Step—the Mastery he had earned—that was different.

He stepped into the shadow.

8

Zora was on her knees, surrounded by the figures of the Haven.

They were not attacking her. They did not need to. Their words were enough. Their disappointment. Their grief. Their accusations.

You were supposed to be our future, Mara's voice whispered. But you are just as weak as the rest of us.

You were supposed to be strong, Seph said. You were supposed to protect us.

You were supposed to matter, Bram whispered.

Zora's hands were shaking. Her claws retracted. She wanted to give up. She wanted to disappear.

Then she heard a voice. Not from the valley. From somewhere deeper. Calder's voice, but different from the figure. Calmer. Warmer.

You are not weak, Zora. You are not a failure. You are the strongest person I know.

Zora looked up. The figures were still there, but she could see past them now. She could see the truth. They were not real. They were echoes of her own guilt, her own fear.

She raised her claw covers.

"I am not weak," she said. "I am not a failure. I am Zora. I survived the Haven. I survived the attack. I will survive this."

She slashed through the figures. One by one, they dissolved.

9

Lyra was drowning in noise.

A thousand voices, a thousand thoughts, all of them screaming at once. She could hear Kaelen's fear, Zora's grief, Fenris's confusion. She could hear the valley's hunger, its ancient rage.

She could hear her mother.

You are weak, her mother whispered. You have always been weak. You could not save me. You could not save Nikki. You will never save anyone.

Lyra covered her ears. It did not help. The voices were inside her head, inside her mark.

But then she heard something else. Kaelen's voice, faint but clear.

Lyra. I am coming. Hold on.

She opened her eyes. The mist was still there, but she could see something beyond it—a glimmer of violet light. Kaelen's Void Step.

Hold on, she told herself. Hold on.

10

Kaelen found Lyra first.

He stepped out of the shadow beside her, his hand closing on her wrist. She gasped, turning, and then she was in his arms, trembling.

"Kaelen. I could not hear you. I could not find you."

"I am here. I am not leaving."

The mist surged around them, trying to separate them again. But Kaelen held on. His Void Step Mastery was stronger than the valley's echoes.

He stepped into the shadow again—and emerged beside Zora.

11

Zora was standing, her claw covers extended, her cat eyes blazing.

"Zora," Kaelen said. "We need to go."

Zora looked at him. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but they were clear.

"I am ready," she said.

12

Fenris was the last to be found.

He was standing in the center of the mist, his violet patterns blazing, his amethyst eyes fixed on the darkness ahead. He had been fighting the valley's echoes alone—not with words, but with will.

Fenris, Kaelen called through the bond.

The hound turned. His tail wagged once.

Together, the bond pulsed.

"Together," Kaelen said.

13

The mist began to clear.

It did not retreat all at once. It withdrew slowly, reluctantly, as if the valley was admitting defeat. The figures dissolved. The whispers faded. The path to the cave was revealed.

Kaelen looked at his friends. Lyra was pale but steady. Zora's eyes were red but clear. Fenris was calm, his violet patterns glowing.

"We made it," Lyra whispered.

Kaelen nodded. "We made it together."

14

The cave was before them.

Inside, the Void's Heart Core waited—a small, black crystal shard, no larger than a finger, pulsing with violet light.

Kaelen stepped forward.
