Chapter 4: Crimson in the Storage Shed

The rusty door of the old storage shed slammed shut behind Zain with a hollow clang that echoed like a coffin lid. Dust motes danced in the thin shafts of light slipping through cracked wooden slats. The air reeked of mildew, old sports equipment, and something far worse—rotting meat and copper. In the far corner, the thing crouched.

Red eyes glowed like fresh blood under a streetlamp. Its body was humanoid but wrong: pale skin stretched too tight over lean muscle, mouth split into a jagged grin filled with needle teeth. A single kagune tentacle twitched behind it, jagged and wet, like a broken wing made of flesh and bone. Low-level stray ghoul. Exactly what the system had warned him about.

Zain's heart slammed against his ribs, but his mouth curled into a feral grin. First real fight in my new life and it's a goddamn Tokyo Ghoul reject? Bring it, ugly. I've got a harem waiting outside and no monster is crashing my oppai paradise on day two.

[Combat Mode Activated]

[Enemy Identified: Stray Ghoul – Level 8]

[Threat Assessment: Low (for now). Use environment. Do not let it scream.]

[Hidden Passive: Perverted Determination – +15% combat focus when protecting future waifus]

The ghoul lunged without warning. Its kagune whipped forward like a barbed whip, slicing the air with a wet hiss. Zain dodged left on pure instinct—his DEX stat saving his skin. The tentacle smashed into a stack of metal chairs, sending them crashing in a deafening avalanche.

"Too slow!" Zain snarled, grabbing a broken broom handle from the floor. He swung it like a baseball bat, channeling every late-night fantasy of being the hero. The wood cracked across the ghoul's jaw with a satisfying crunch. Black blood sprayed.

The creature screeched, a high-pitched sound that made his teeth vibrate. It charged again, faster this time, claws raking toward his chest. Zain twisted, but the tip of one claw caught his uniform sleeve, tearing fabric and drawing a shallow line of red across his forearm.

Pain flared hot and bright. Ow—okay, that actually hurts! Note to self: buy armor later.

He rolled behind an old vaulting horse, breathing hard. Think, Zain. You're not some weak transfer student anymore. You've got the system. Use it.

[Skill Suggestion: Observe in Combat – Weak Point Detected]

Target: Base of kagune. Destroy it and the ghoul loses mobility.

Zain activated Observe mid-roll. The world flickered with blue overlays. The kagune glowed with a pulsing weak spot right where it connected to the ghoul's lower spine—glowing red like a game target.

"Got you."

He exploded forward, broom handle raised. The ghoul swung its kagune again, but Zain slid under it like he had practiced the move his whole life. The wooden shaft stabbed upward with every ounce of his STR stat. Wood met flesh with a wet, tearing sound. The weak point exploded in black ichor.

The ghoul howled, staggering. Its kagune flailed wildly, smashing shelves and sending basketballs bouncing everywhere. Zain didn't stop. He yanked the broken broom free, spun, and drove the jagged end straight into the creature's eye.

"Stay away from my school. Stay away from my girls!"

The ghoul convulsed once, twice, then collapsed in a heap of twitching limbs. The red glow in its eyes faded to dull black.

Silence fell except for Zain's ragged breathing.

[Enemy Defeated!]

[EXP Gained: 850]

[Level Up! Level 3 → Level 5]

[Stats Increased: STR +4, VIT +3, DEX +5, CHA +2 (Perverted Determination bonus)]

[New Skill Unlocked: Basic Regeneration (Passive – Minor wounds heal 3x faster)]

[Title Earned: First Blood Guardian (Hidden – +10% damage against dimensional invaders)]

[Reward: Ghoul Resistance Fragment (Consume to gain 5% resistance to kagune toxins)]

[Multiverse Ripple Stabilized – Temporary]

Zain dropped the bloody broom and leaned against the wall, laughing breathlessly. "Holy crap… I actually did it. First monster kill. Issei would be proud." He wiped black blood off his cheek with his torn sleeve. The cut on his arm was already closing, skin knitting together thanks to the new regeneration skill. Nice. Free healing means more time for skinship later.

He dragged the corpse behind a stack of mats, covering it with old tarps. No one would find it for days, and by then the system's ripple cleanup would probably dissolve the evidence. He checked his uniform—torn sleeve, a few blood spatters. A quick inventory swap pulled out a spare jacket from his endless storage space (thank you, infinite inventory). He zipped it over the damage, ran fingers through his hair, and forced his breathing to calm.

Back to cute girls. Back to pretending I was just grabbing my lucky pencil or whatever dumb excuse I gave.

He slipped out of the shed, locking the door behind him with a rusty padlock he found on the ground. The club fair noise hit him like a wave—laughter, music, the sizzle of takoyaki stalls. The sky was still bright, cherry blossoms drifting lazily. No one had noticed a thing.

Sawako was the first to spot him. She stood near the Camping Club tent, fidgeting with her bag, eyes scanning the crowd. The moment she saw him her face lit up with relief, then worry.

"Z-Zain-kun! You were gone so long… are you okay? You look a little pale."

Hori and Taiga turned at her voice. Hori's sharp eyes narrowed instantly. "New guy. What happened to your jacket? And why do you smell like… rust?"

Taiga crossed her arms. "Tch. If you ditched us for some weird fight club thing I'm kicking your butt."

Zain flashed his brightest, most innocent smile, CHA stat working overtime. "Me? Fight? Nah. Just tripped over some old equipment in the storage shed while looking for my… uh… lucky guitar pick. Total klutz moment. But hey—" he held up a clean hand— "I'm back and ready to sign up for every club you girls want."

Sawako stepped closer, gently touching his sleeve. Her fingers brushed the hidden tear underneath and she blushed. "As long as you're safe… that's what matters."

[Sawako Affection +12% – Current: 57% – "He always comes back smiling…"]

Hori smirked, but her eyes softened. "Fine. But you're buying takoyaki for all of us as apology."

Taiga huffed. "And extra spicy. Don't think we forgot about your chicken promise."

Before Zain could answer, Chika Fujiwara bounced over with Kaguya in tow. "Transfer boy! You missed the council demonstration! But we saved you a spot—sign here! We have unlimited cake!"

Kaguya's elegant gaze flicked over him, one eyebrow raised. "You seem… different. More alive. Interesting."

Yotsuba suddenly appeared from behind a tent, grabbing his arm with both hands and swinging. "Mister Strong! Come camping with us! Please please please!"

Zain laughed, surrounded by the girls, their warmth chasing away the last chill of the shed. His new level thrummed under his skin. The cut on his arm was already gone. The ghoul was dead. And the eclipse in the sky? Still just a faint crimson edge no one else could see.

One monster down. Harem growing. Powers stacking. This is just the beginning.

He slung an arm around Sawako's shoulders—casual, friendly, and definitely not accidental. "Alright, ladies. Clubs, food, and zero more shed adventures. Let's make today legendary."

As they walked toward the Light Music Club stage, the faint red flicker in the sky pulsed once… then faded.

For now.
