Chapter 29 - The Invitation

The walk home that afternoon felt longer than usual.

Chelsea walked beside Mia, but her mind was elsewhere.

Ryan and Cole's warning still echoed in her head.

"You should learn your place."

She hated threats.

But what bothered her more was the fact that Adrian had stepped in.

Not dramatically.

Not emotionally.

Just… quietly.

Like it was natural.

Chelsea glanced ahead and saw Adrian and his friends walking a few steps in front of them.

Marcus and Leo were arguing loudly about basketball.

Leo insisted he could beat Marcus in a one-on-one match.

Marcus laughed so hard he nearly tripped over a rock.

"You?" Marcus said. "Beat me?"

Leo puffed out his chest.

"I have hidden talent."

Ethan walked beside them silently, hands in his pockets.

Adrian walked slightly behind them, calm as always.

Chelsea quickly looked away when his eyes briefly met hers.

Mia nudged her arm.

"You're staring."

Chelsea frowned.

"I am not."

"You totally are."

"I was not."

Mia grinned.

"You like him."

Chelsea stopped walking.

"I absolutely do not."

Mia raised both hands in surrender.

"Okay, okay."

But her smile said she didn't believe it.

Up ahead, Leo suddenly turned around.

"Hey!"

Chelsea looked up.

Leo was waving.

"Why are you two walking so far back?"

Marcus grinned.

"Come join the cool people."

Chelsea sighed.

"We're fine here."

Adrian glanced over his shoulder.

His expression unreadable.

But he slowed his pace slightly.

Soon the two groups ended up walking together anyway.

Leo immediately started talking again.

"So Chelsea," he said, walking backward dramatically.

"You survived your first confrontation with the Queen."

Chelsea rolled her eyes.

"She's not a queen."

Marcus laughed.

"Careful. Half the school disagrees."

Chelsea shrugged.

"Half the school is wrong."

Leo burst out laughing.

"I swear, you're fearless."

Adrian glanced sideways at her.

"She's stubborn."

Chelsea crossed her arms.

"And you're annoying."

Leo clapped his hands.

"I love this dynamic."

They reached a crossroads where Mia usually went her own way.

Mia waved goodbye.

"See you tomorrow!"

Chelsea nodded.

"Bye."

Now it was just Chelsea walking with Adrian and the boys.

Which felt… strange.

But not uncomfortable.

Marcus suddenly spoke.

"So we're throwing a party this weekend."

Leo pumped his fist.

"Finally!"

Chelsea looked confused.

"A party?"

Marcus nodded.

"My house. My parents are out of town."

Leo grinned mischievously.

"And it's going to be legendary."

Chelsea raised an eyebrow.

"That sounds like trouble."

Adrian smirked slightly.

"It usually is."

Marcus turned toward Chelsea.

"You should come."

Chelsea blinked.

"Me?"

Leo nodded enthusiastically.

"Yeah! It'll be fun."

Chelsea shook her head immediately.

"I don't think that's a good idea."

Marcus frowned.

"Why not?"

Chelsea gestured vaguely.

"Because… Vanessa already thinks I'm stealing Adrian."

Leo shrugged.

"So?"

Chelsea gave him a look.

"You clearly don't understand how much she hates me."

Ethan finally spoke.

"That's exactly why you should come."

Chelsea looked at him.

"Excuse me?"

Ethan's voice was calm.

"If you hide, she wins."

Chelsea hesitated.

He had a point.

But still…

Parties weren't really her thing.

Adrian suddenly spoke.

"Don't come if you're scared."

Chelsea turned toward him instantly.

"I'm not scared."

His smirk widened.

"Then come."

Chelsea narrowed her eyes.

"You're doing that on purpose."

"Doing what?"

"Challenging me."

Adrian shrugged.

"Maybe."

Marcus laughed.

"She's definitely coming now."

Chelsea sighed.

"I hate all of you."

Leo grinned.

"That's the spirit."

Across town, inside a large luxurious bedroom…

Vanessa sat in front of her mirror.

Her phone buzzed with messages from friends.

Most of them were about the confrontation earlier that day.

But one message caught her attention.

It was from a girl in Marcus's social circle.

"Marcus is throwing a party this weekend."

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

Another message followed.

"Chelsea might be there."

Vanessa slowly leaned back in her chair.

Then she smiled.

A slow, dangerous smile.

"Well," she murmured softly.

"That works perfectly."

She picked up her phone and began typing another message.

This one went to Ryan.

"I need another favor."

Meanwhile, Chelsea walked the rest of the road toward her house.

Adrian walked beside her quietly for a few minutes.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally, Chelsea broke the silence.

"You didn't have to step in earlier."

Adrian glanced at her.

"With Ryan?"

"Yes."

He shrugged.

"It wasn't a big deal."

Chelsea studied him.

"You do that a lot."

"Do what?"

"Act like things don't matter."

Adrian looked ahead.

"Most things don't."

Chelsea frowned slightly.

"You're strange."

He smirked.

"And you're curious."

Chelsea sighed.

"Goodnight, Adrian."

She turned toward her house.

Adrian watched her walk away.

Marcus suddenly called from down the street.

"Yo Adrian!"

Adrian turned.

Marcus grinned.

"You like her."

Leo nodded dramatically.

"Definitely."

Adrian rolled his eyes.

"You're both idiots."

But as he walked away…

A small smile appeared on his face.

And he didn't even notice it.
