Chapter 28 - Shadows Behind the Queen

The rest of lunch passed with a strange mix of laughter and tension.

Chelsea tried to act normal while Adrian's friends continued joking around, but she could still feel the weight of Vanessa's stare lingering in the air long after she had left the cafeteria.

Marcus leaned back in his chair, stretching his arms.

"I haven't seen Vanessa that angry in years."

Leo grinned.

"Honestly? That was entertaining."

Chelsea sighed.

"I'm glad someone enjoyed it."

Ethan, who had been quiet most of the time, finally spoke.

"You should be careful."

Chelsea looked at him.

"Why?"

Ethan rested his elbows on the table.

"Vanessa doesn't attack directly."

Marcus nodded.

"He's right."

Leo added dramatically, "She prefers… creative revenge."

Chelsea frowned slightly.

"What does that mean exactly?"

Adrian answered calmly.

"It means she won't come after you herself."

Chelsea raised an eyebrow.

"Then who will?"

Adrian's eyes darkened slightly.

"People who want her approval."

Chelsea leaned back in her chair.

"Great."

Leo tried to lighten the mood.

"Hey, if anything happens, we'll protect you."

Marcus nodded proudly.

"Yeah, we're basically heroes."

Chelsea looked at them skeptically.

"I feel safer already."

Adrian smirked.

"You should."

Classes dragged on slowly after lunch.

Chelsea tried to focus on her lessons, but Ethan's warning kept replaying in her mind.

Vanessa doesn't attack directly.

The final bell eventually rang, releasing the students into the warm afternoon sunlight.

Chelsea packed her books and stepped into the hallway.

Students flooded the corridors, talking loudly and rushing toward the exits.

Mia joined her near the lockers.

"I heard about the cafeteria," Mia whispered excitedly.

Chelsea groaned.

"Of course you did."

"Everyone did," Mia said. "You embarrassed Vanessa in front of half the school."

"That wasn't my intention."

"Well, it happened."

Chelsea closed her locker.

"Fantastic."

Outside the school gates, the crowd slowly thinned as students began heading home.

Chelsea and Mia walked along the path that led toward the bus stop.

The afternoon sun was warm, and for a moment everything felt peaceful again.

Then Mia suddenly slowed down.

"Chelsea…"

Chelsea noticed it too.

Two boys were standing near the path ahead.

They weren't from her class.

But she recognized them immediately.

Everyone did.

Ryan and Cole.

They were seniors.

Bigger, louder, and known for causing trouble whenever teachers weren't around.

Ryan stepped forward with a crooked grin.

"Well look who it is."

Chelsea sighed quietly.

So this is how it starts.

Mia whispered nervously, "Let's just keep walking."

But Ryan blocked their path.

"Not so fast."

Cole leaned against the fence beside him.

"We just want to talk."

Chelsea crossed her arms.

"Then talk."

Ryan chuckled.

"You're bold."

Cole smirked.

"Vanessa says you've been acting… confident lately."

Chelsea's eyes narrowed.

"So she sent you."

Ryan shrugged.

"Let's just say we're delivering a message."

Mia grabbed Chelsea's arm.

"Chelsea, maybe we should go—"

Ryan stepped closer.

"You should learn your place."

Chelsea stared at him calmly.

"And where exactly is that?"

Cole laughed.

"Definitely not near Adrian."

Ryan added,

"People who challenge Vanessa usually regret it."

Chelsea tilted her head.

"Are you done?"

Ryan frowned.

"You're not scared?"

Chelsea shrugged.

"Should I be?"

Ryan stepped closer again.

"You might want to start being scared."

"Hey."

The voice came from behind them.

Ryan turned.

Adrian stood a few steps away.

Marcus, Leo, and Ethan were with him.

Marcus cracked his knuckles.

"Well, this looks interesting."

Leo grinned.

"Did we miss something?"

Ryan scoffed.

"This doesn't concern you."

Adrian walked forward slowly.

His expression was calm.

But his eyes were cold.

"It concerns me."

Cole straightened up.

"We're just talking."

Ethan stepped beside Adrian.

"Then you should probably finish that conversation somewhere else."

Ryan looked between the two groups.

Then he laughed.

"You think we're scared of you?"

Marcus shrugged.

"Not yet."

The tension in the air thickened.

Students nearby began slowing down, sensing the confrontation.

Chelsea sighed.

"This is unnecessary."

Ryan pointed at her.

"You started this."

Adrian stepped in front of Chelsea slightly.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"But final."

"You did."

Ryan hesitated.

Marcus took another step forward.

Leo looked almost excited.

"Come on, man," Leo said. "You don't want this."

Ryan looked at Cole.

Cole muttered something under his breath.

Then Ryan finally stepped back.

"This isn't over," he warned.

Adrian didn't react.

Ryan and Cole walked away, disappearing down the street.

Mia exhaled loudly.

"Oh my God."

Chelsea rubbed her forehead.

"This is getting ridiculous."

Marcus laughed.

"Welcome to high school politics."

Leo grinned at Chelsea.

"You handled that pretty well."

Chelsea looked at Adrian.

"You didn't need to interfere."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"You sure about that?"

Chelsea hesitated.

Then sighed.

"…Maybe a little."

Adrian smirked.

"Thought so."

Ethan spoke quietly.

"This was only a warning."

Chelsea frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Ethan looked toward the direction Ryan had gone.

"Vanessa is just getting started."

Chelsea watched the empty road ahead.

For the first time…

She wondered how far Vanessa was willing to go.

Across town…

Vanessa sat in the back seat of her family's luxury car.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Ryan.

"We delivered the message."

Vanessa smiled slowly.

But it wasn't enough.

Not yet.

She typed back.

"Good. Now we begin."
