The cafeteria was loud that afternoon.
Students laughed, trays clattered, chairs scraped across the floor, and the smell of hot food filled the air. But at Adrian's table, things were unusually lively.
Leo was halfway through another exaggerated story.
"I'm telling you," he said dramatically, waving his fork like a microphone, "Marcus slipped because he was trying to impress that girl from the swimming team."
Marcus scoffed.
"That is not what happened."
Chelsea raised an eyebrow.
"So what actually happened?"
Marcus sighed like a man tired of defending himself.
"The floor was wet."
Leo burst out laughing.
"The pool was wet too, genius!"
Chelsea couldn't stop the small laugh that escaped her.
It surprised her.
She hadn't expected Adrian's friends to be… normal.
Funny, even.
Marcus noticed her smiling and pointed.
"See? Even Chelsea thinks it's funny."
Chelsea shrugged lightly.
"Maybe a little."
Adrian leaned back in his chair, watching the interaction quietly.
His friends accepting Chelsea this easily wasn't something he had planned.
But strangely…
He didn't mind it at all.
Across the cafeteria, Vanessa stood frozen.
Chelsea sitting at Adrian's table was bad enough.
But laughing with his friends?
That was worse.
Vanessa's friends shifted nervously behind her.
"You should just ignore her," one of them whispered.
Vanessa slowly shook her head.
"No."
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
"She's forgetting something."
"What?"
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
"This school has a hierarchy."
And then she started walking toward Adrian's table.
Chelsea noticed her first.
Her smile faded slightly.
"Here we go again," she muttered.
Marcus followed her gaze.
"Oh."
Leo leaned back in his chair dramatically.
"The queen arrives."
Adrian didn't move.
He simply watched.
Vanessa stopped beside their table.
Her posture was perfect, her expression composed.
But the tension in the air changed instantly.
"Adrian," she said sweetly.
He looked up.
"Yes?"
Her eyes flicked toward Chelsea.
"You didn't tell me you were hosting lunch meetings now."
Marcus rolled his eyes.
"Relax, Vanessa. It's just lunch."
Vanessa ignored him.
She was focused entirely on Chelsea.
"Interesting seat you've chosen."
Chelsea met her gaze calmly.
"It was available."
Vanessa smiled thinly.
"You seem comfortable here."
Chelsea took a sip of her drink.
"I am."
Leo leaned toward Ethan and whispered loudly,
"Oh this is going to be good."
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"You must be confused."
Chelsea blinked.
"About what?"
Vanessa gestured around the table.
"This isn't your circle."
Marcus frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Vanessa didn't even look at him.
"Chelsea prefers books and libraries, doesn't she?"
Chelsea tilted her head slightly.
"And?"
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"And this table is for people who actually matter."
The words hung in the air.
The cafeteria grew quieter around them as students sensed drama.
Chelsea slowly placed her fork down.
Then she stood up.
For a second, Adrian thought she might walk away.
Instead…
She looked directly at Vanessa.
"You're right."
Vanessa blinked.
Chelsea continued calmly.
"I do prefer books."
She stepped slightly closer.
"But at least books have substance."
Leo slapped a hand over his mouth to stop himself from laughing.
Marcus leaned back in his chair, impressed.
Vanessa's eyes flashed with anger.
"You think you're clever."
Chelsea shrugged.
"I think you're insecure."
A loud oooooh rippled from nearby tables.
Vanessa's face turned red.
Adrian finally spoke.
"Vanessa."
His voice was calm.
But firm.
She turned toward him.
"What?"
He gestured toward the table.
"If you're done…"
Vanessa stared at him.
"You're taking her side?"
Adrian's expression didn't change.
"I'm asking you to stop causing a scene."
For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely stunned.
Adrian had never embarrassed her like this before.
Her gaze moved slowly from Adrian…
To Chelsea…
To the boys at the table who clearly weren't supporting her.
And something dark shifted behind her eyes.
"This isn't over," she said quietly.
Then she turned and walked away.
Her heels clicking sharply across the floor.
The cafeteria slowly returned to normal.
Leo immediately exploded with laughter.
"Oh my God, Chelsea!"
Marcus grinned.
"That was brutal."
Chelsea sat down again calmly.
"She started it."
Ethan nodded slightly.
"True."
Adrian leaned closer to her.
"You just declared war."
Chelsea looked at him.
"She declared it first."
He studied her for a moment.
Then smiled slightly.
"You're fearless."
Chelsea rolled her eyes.
"I'm just tired of her nonsense."
Leo raised his drink.
"To Chelsea."
Marcus raised his too.
"To Chelsea."
Ethan followed.
Adrian lifted his cup last.
"To trouble."
Chelsea sighed.
"I regret sitting here."
But she was smiling.
Across the cafeteria…
Vanessa stood near the exit.
Her hands were shaking.
One of her friends approached carefully.
"Are you okay?"
Vanessa didn't answer immediately.
Her eyes remained fixed on Chelsea.
Then slowly…
She smiled.
But it wasn't a normal smile.
It was cold.
Dangerous.
"Oh," she said softly.
"She wants to play."
Her friend hesitated.
"What are you going to do?"
Vanessa turned toward the doors.
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"Break her."
