Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

After using them twice now, August had already figured out that the Power Enhancement Shoes only had enough charge for one use at Level Three, or three uses at Level One.

Just now, he had used Level One enhancement, and after only three kicks, the battery had been drained dry.

His original plan had been to take out three of them first...

But because of that miss, a small complication had appeared.

"Looks like I'll need to practice my aim with my kicks when I get the chance. And I need to train my left leg too."

Thinking that, August rushed straight at the two remaining beggars.

When he was still five or six meters away, he happened to spot a small rock lying quietly on the ground. He immediately lifted his leg as if he were about to kick it.

That motion instantly scared the other two.

After all, they had seen exactly what had happened to their companions just moments ago.

Neither of them wanted to become the next victim.

So they hurriedly covered their heads and scrambled aside to dodge.

And that was exactly the result August wanted.

After using the feint, he finally closed the distance with one of them. Borrowing the momentum of his charge, he jumped into the air.

Under the man's horrified gaze, August drove his left foot forward in a flying kick and slammed it right into his stomach.

Level Three Leg Power!

"Urgh...!"

The beggar who took the hit immediately clutched his stomach with a twisted expression and collapsed to the ground.

Then he opened his mouth and started vomiting like crazy.

He probably even threw up whatever he had eaten the day before yesterday.

"If you don't want to end up like them, then get lost!"

The moment he landed, August shot the last beggar a murderous glare, frightening the man so badly that he turned and ran on the spot.

Only then did August finally let out a breath of relief.

Because by then, his Power Enhancement Shoes were completely out of charge. If that man had refused to run, then August would have had no choice but to consider the riskier option of using a [Banana Grenade].

But the moment he used a bomb, it would definitely cause a major disturbance and draw attention, and the consequences of that would be far beyond his control.

Fortunately, that worst-case scenario did not happen.

To avoid the runaway beggar bringing people back too soon, August immediately hoisted the unconscious Law onto his back and ran.

At some point, the coarse cloth Law had used to cover his face had already fallen off.

As they fled, they happened to pass the long-haired beggar who had been knocked down first. At that moment, the man was staring at them with pure venom in his eyes.

When August noticed that, a trace of ferocity flashed through his own gaze.

He knew this matter probably would not end so easily, but he did not stop running because of it.

Sure enough, some time later, the beggar who had escaped returned with several more people.

"Useless trash! There were several of you, and you still got beaten by a brat? One of you even got scared and ran? You're all worthless!"

One of the newcomers was a bald beggar with a vicious face. The moment he saw the children were gone, he immediately started cursing them out.

The others lowered their heads, bruised and miserable, their hearts full of frustration.

But just as they were being scolded, the long-haired beggar, who had finally recovered a little, suddenly spoke up.

"Those two brats definitely had something wrong with them."

"What's wrong with them? Are you still trying to make excuses for embarrassing yourself?"

The bald beggar thought the man was just looking for a way to save face, so he sneered at him immediately.

Although the long-haired beggar's expression turned ugly from being mocked, he still insisted, "That brat in the hat had those white patches on his face. I think they might be... survivors who escaped from Flevance."

"What did you say?!"

The bald beggar was instantly shocked.

The others were just as stunned, and fear quickly spread across their faces.

After all, under the World Government's deliberate propaganda, White Lead Disease was known as a terrifying, incurable super-contagious plague.

And it was precisely because of that that the surrounding countries had eventually joined forces to wipe out the resisting nation of Flevance.

So hearing that possibility now naturally made everyone uneasy and afraid.

"I'm sure of it. I've seen people with that disease before. Their skin looked exactly like that kid's." The more the long-haired beggar thought about it, the more convinced he became. And even if it turned out he had seen wrong, it did not matter. What he wanted was for those two brats to die.

So of course, the more serious he made it sound, the better. He believed a man as ambitious as the bald beggar would never let such an opportunity slip by.

"What do we do, boss? I... I touched that kid in the hat earlier. I'm not infected, am I?"

"Get lost! Stay away from me!"

"Boss, let's get out of here already. I... I suddenly don't feel so good."

"Leave? My ass! A bunch of idiots!"

The bald beggar's expression looked ugly at first, but then, as if he had suddenly thought of something, he began to laugh in a sinister tone.

"Listen up, all of you. Those two brats definitely are... no, they must be leftovers who escaped from Flevance!"

Seeing the blank confusion still written across the faces of the idiots around him, the bald beggar cursed them in his heart while explaining.

"This is obviously a premeditated terrorist attack! Those people who escaped from Flevance are trying to take revenge on the countries that destroyed them. They want to spread that horrible disease here, and those two brats are part of the plan."

"But! We exposed the Flevance survivors' conspiracy, and we were the first to discover those two plague-carrying brats ahead of time."

"Tell me, in that situation, how do you think Lord Municipal Officer will reward us? With money? With houses? With women? Or maybe with everything we could want?!"

"The chance to change your fate is already right in front of you. Are you really going to back down now?!"

The bald beggar's words were highly persuasive. The fear that had been on the others' faces moments ago quickly gave way to greedy excitement.

Compared to some invisible disease they could neither see nor touch, the promise of a "better future" was obviously far more tempting.

And everyone had a gambler's mindset. It was not as if the disease was guaranteed to infect anyone it touched, otherwise the soldiers who had gone to destroy Flevance would have been the first to fall.

Of course, from now on, it would still be best to avoid direct contact with those two brats as much as possible.

So the bald beggar immediately gave out orders.

"You two, go invite Captain Jess over. If necessary, you can leak a little 'information,' but make sure of one thing, don't let word spread too early."

"Got it."

"Don't worry, boss!"

Captain Jess was the local security captain, and the highest-ranking official they could normally come into contact with.

After all, with their status at the very bottom of society, even if a mountain of merit were placed right in front of them, they still had to have the stomach to swallow it.

So instead of choking themselves to death, it was better to turn it into a favor for someone higher up.

That way, when the big shots ate meat, they would at least get to drink some soup.

To be fair, the bald beggar's head was still screwed on straight. He knew how to use the opportunity to secure benefits for himself, and he was not foolish enough to try to swallow everything alone.

As for the long-haired beggar who had started all this, he grew excited as well. At first, he had only wanted to spread the news and get those two brats killed. He had not thought nearly this far ahead.
