The next morning felt different.
The school hallway was louder than usual, but the noise didn't feel normal.
It felt… tense.
Students were gathered in groups, talking excitedly about the competition.
Some of them looked at us as Ethan and I walked past.
Word had spread.
We were the ones representing the school.
"No pressure," I muttered.
Ethan glanced at me.
"You handle pressure well."
"That doesn't mean I enjoy it."
He gave a faint smile.
The Auditorium
The competition was being held in the school auditorium.
When we entered, the place was already crowded.
Students from other schools were sitting in separate sections.
Teachers stood near the stage organizing the participants.
The stage had several desks arranged in a row.
Each desk had a small name card for the competing teams.
I spotted ours.
Ridgeway High – Ethan Blake & Lena Carter
Seeing our names there made the competition feel real.
Very real.
"Participants, please take your seats," one of the judges announced.
Ethan and I walked toward the stage.
As we sat down, I noticed Clara in the audience section with the backup team.
She was watching us again.
But this time, her expression wasn't challenging.
It was serious.
Round One
The judge stepped forward.
"Welcome to the Annual Academic Challenge."
The audience quieted.
"This competition will test logic, mathematics, and analytical thinking."
A screen behind the stage lit up.
"The first round begins now."
A timer appeared.
Ten minutes.
The first question appeared on the screen.
I leaned toward Ethan slightly.
"What do you think?"
He scanned the problem quickly.
"Start with the third condition."
"Why the third?"
"It changes the entire equation."
I followed his reasoning.
Within a minute, we had an answer.
The second question appeared.
Harder.
But not impossible.
We worked quickly, passing the notebook back and forth.
The audience was silent except for the ticking timer.
Third question.
Fourth.
By the time the timer reached the last minute, we had finished all of them.
I exhaled quietly.
"That was intense."
Ethan simply nodded.
Results
The judges collected the answer sheets.
The audience started whispering again.
A few minutes later, the main judge returned.
"The results for Round One are ready."
My heart started beating faster.
"Several teams performed well," he continued.
"But two teams achieved perfect scores."
The audience murmured loudly.
I glanced at Ethan.
He looked calm.
Too calm.
The judge continued.
"Ridgeway High…"
A small cheer erupted from our school section.
"…and Westbrook Academy."
Another team across the stage reacted excitedly.
Perfect score.
Round one was a tie.
A New Rival?
As we stood up from our seats, one of the students from Westbrook Academy walked past us.
He glanced at Ethan.
Then at me.
"Good start," he said.
His tone sounded friendly.
But competitive.
Ethan nodded slightly.
"You too."
The student smirked.
"See you in round two."
Then he walked away.
I looked at Ethan.
"Looks like we have more rivals."
He shrugged.
"I expected that."
Watching from the Audience
As we stepped off the stage for a short break, I noticed Clara again.
She stood near the side of the auditorium.
When our eyes met, she gave a small nod.
Not jealous.
Not angry.
Just acknowledging the result.
For the first time, I wondered what she was really thinking.
The Next Round
A voice echoed through the speakers.
"Participants, prepare for Round Two."
Ethan looked at me.
"Ready?"
I nodded.
"Always."
But something about the way he looked at the stage told me something important.
Round one had only been the beginning.
The real competition was just getting started.
