Chapter 19 - Celebration at School

The news spread faster than I expected.

By the time we returned to school the next day, everyone already knew.

Ridgeway High had won.

The hallways were filled with excitement.

Students were talking, laughing, and congratulating us.

Some even clapped when Ethan and I walked in together.

I felt embarrassed.

Ethan, of course, looked calm.

Too calm.

"Why are they staring?" I whispered.

"You're the champion," he replied casually.

"I don't like being stared at."

"You'll get used to it."

I rolled my eyes.

The School Assembly

That afternoon, the principal called for a special assembly in the auditorium.

All students gathered.

When Ethan and I walked onto the stage, the room erupted in applause.

My cheeks felt warm.

This was way more attention than I liked.

The principal smiled proudly.

"This victory is not just a win," he said. "It is proof of teamwork, discipline, and intelligence."

Teamwork.

That word made me glance at Ethan.

He was looking straight ahead, but I could tell he was listening carefully.

The principal continued,

"Ethan Blake and Lena Carter have brought honor to our school."

More applause.

I shifted slightly.

Ethan leaned closer and whispered,

"Relax."

"I am relaxed."

"You're not."

I tried not to smile.

After the Ceremony

The assembly ended, but students surrounded us immediately.

"Lena, you were amazing!"

"Ethan, that final round was insane!"

"Are you two really dating?"

That last question came from someone in the crowd.

I froze slightly.

Ethan answered calmly.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

The crowd reacted with excitement.

Some students cheered.

Some giggled.

I glanced at him.

He didn't look uncomfortable at all.

Instead, he stood beside me confidently.

Not overprotective.

Not distant.

Just steady.

Unexpected Moment

As the crowd slowly cleared, Daniel from Westbrook approached us.

He didn't look upset.

Just competitive.

"Congrats," he said.

Ethan nodded.

"Thanks."

Daniel looked at me.

"You're good. I'll admit that."

"Only good?" I replied.

He laughed.

"Alright. Very good."

Then he extended his hand toward Ethan.

"Next time, we won't tie."

Ethan shook his hand firmly.

"Looking forward to it."

No hostility.

Just mutual respect.

Daniel stepped back.

But before leaving, he added,

"By the way… don't let your relationship distract you next time."

Then he walked away.

I sighed.

"He really likes teasing us."

Ethan glanced at me.

"Let him try."

That simple confidence made my heart feel strangely steady.

Later That Day

After school, the campus felt calmer.

The celebration decorations were still up near the entrance.

Some students took pictures.

Others talked about the final round.

Ethan and I walked toward the gate like usual.

But something felt different now.

We weren't just rivals anymore.

We weren't just pretending either.

We had actually achieved something together.

At the gate, Ethan stopped.

"Good work," he said.

I smiled.

"You too."

There was a short pause.

Then he added,

"This is just the beginning."

I raised an eyebrow.

"Beginning of what?"

He looked at the school building behind us.

"The next competition."

Of course.

He would say that.

But this time…

I didn't feel annoyed.

Because somehow…

Winning together felt better than winning alone.

And maybe…

Just maybe…

This fake relationship was slowly turning into something neither of us expected.

The celebration wasn't the end.

It was the start of something new. 🎉📖
