Chapter 361: Both Sides of the Line
The agreement held through the tenth day and into the eleventh, and by then it had stopped feeling like an agreement at all. Both camps simply moved to the markers when Soren's instrument spiked, the way two crews move toward the same fire without anyone giving the order.
Edra brought her own reader — a thin woman named Pell, who carried a case nearly identical to Soren's and checked her numbers against his without being asked. By the third joint reading, the two of them had stopped comparing results out loud and started writing them on the same page, passed back and forth between two hands instead of two books.
"It's faster this way," Soren admitted, on the tenth night, like the admission cost him something. "I don't enjoy saying that."
"You don't have to enjoy it," Pell said. "Just keep writing."
