Chapter 364: The Word He Sent
Dawn finished coming up grey and stayed that way. Nobody moved to break camp. Nobody had anywhere better to be.
Kai sat at the field's edge with his father's book open on his knee, the way he always did after a descent. Pool at sixty-eight percent, recovering clean overnight. He wrote the number down before he wrote anything else. Then he sat looking at the blank space under it for a long time.
"You're stalling," Soren said, dropping down beside him with two cups of something hot. "I recognize the face. I make it myself, right before I have to write a report I don't want to write."
"I'm not stalling. I'm deciding."
"From here those look the same."
Pell crossed over from Edra's fire while they talked, her own cup in hand, the gap between the two camps barely worth calling a gap anymore. "Soren says the letter's the hardest part. I told him a letter's only paper. He didn't agree."
