Chapter 371: What the Reports Said
Kai sat at his own fire with a blank page and did not write anything on it. Cole's letter lay folded beside his knee. Three different opening lines had already failed to survive being read back to himself.
"You're not writing it tonight," Soren said, not quite a question.
"Not until I know what Edra finds." Kai set the pen down. "I'd rather answer him once, with what's actually true, than twice."
Mira sat across the fire, the shell quiet in her lap. "You could answer him and still say almost nothing," she said. "Cole would understand a careful letter. He writes them himself."
"I know how to write a careful letter," Kai said. "I'm trying to decide if that's the letter I want to send."
"What's stopping you?"
