Chapter 373: What It Heard
By midday the camp had talked itself in a circle. Soren had checked his instruments twice more and found nothing. Pell had walked the ring's rim three times, counting her own steps out loud, and found the spacing exactly as it had been the day before. Nobody could point to a cause. Everybody had a guess.
"We're not going to argue our way to an answer," Kai said finally. "We should test it."
Soren looked up from his notebook. "Test what, exactly? You can't repeat sending a letter."
"No. But I can say something true standing next to it, the way nobody did last night, and see if it moves."
Soren didn't like it — not the idea, the design. "If you go say something honest at the ring and it changes, we still won't know if it's the words or just another carrier-function contact. You read it yesterday morning and it had already shifted. You'll be reading it again today. That's not a clean test."
