The zoo was quiet now.
The last visitors had left some time ago, and the pathways of Green Ridge Wildlife Park were now illuminated only by the soft yellow glow of night lamps hanging beneath the trees.
Zhao Feng walked slowly along the stone path.
Lingxi lay comfortably across his shoulders, her smooth white body draped behind his neck like a loose scarf. Her head rested beside his collar, violet eyes moving constantly as she examined the unfamiliar world around her.
Every few steps she would lift her head and sniff the air.
Then she would pause, as if processing the scent.
Then sniff again.
The breeze carried the smell of grass, earth, animals, and water.
Lingxi wrinkled her nose slightly.
*Papa.*
"Yes?"
*…so many smells.*
Zhao Feng gave a quiet chuckle.
"Yes... There are many animals here."
Lingxi stretched her neck forward, inhaling again as they walked.
The zoo was alive with quiet sounds.
Leaves rustled in the trees.
Somewhere deeper in the park an owl called.
Water flowed faintly from the stream in the forest reserve.
And beneath all of it were the steady rhythms of sleeping animals.
Zhao Feng could feel them clearly.
Not because he was searching.
They simply existed within his awareness now.
Steady breathing in the darkness.
Small movements beneath trees and inside enclosures.
Quiet lives scattered across the sleeping zoo.
He wasn't used to sensing life this way.
For most of his previous life, noticing something had only meant one thing.
Danger.
A sound in the dark.
A shadow shifting in the corner of his vision.
A heartbeat too close.
His senses had been trained to hunt.
Or to survive.
But here…
None of the lives he sensed carried hostility.
They were simply living.
Lingxi suddenly lifted her head.
Her body shifted slightly across Zhao Feng's shoulders.
*Papa.*
Zhao Feng followed the direction she was looking.
The Siberian tiger enclosure stood ahead.
The massive predator paced slowly along the edge of its territory, muscles rolling beneath its thick coat as it moved through the dim light.
Lingxi leaned forward.
Her tail flicked lightly against Zhao Feng's shoulder.
*…big.*
Zhao Feng smiled faintly.
"It sure is."
The tiger stopped.
Its golden eyes shifted toward the path.
Toward Zhao Feng.
Toward Lingxi.
For a moment the great cat simply stared.
Lingxi stared back.
Neither moved.
Then the tiger gave a low huff, turned around, and resumed pacing along the far side of its enclosure.
Lingxi tilted her head.
*…Serious cat.*
Zhao Feng laughed quietly.
"That's one way to put it."
Lingxi watched it for a few more seconds before losing interest.
Her attention shifted toward something else.
The wolf enclosure.
Six gray wolves rested within the forested habitat near the edge of the reserve.
One wolf lifted its head as Zhao Feng approached.
Its ears twitched.
The animal stared at Lingxi quietly.
Lingxi blinked.
She tilted her head.
*…dog?*
Zhao Feng shook his head.
"Wolf."
*Wolf.* Lingxi repeated the word carefully.
The wolf continued watching them for another moment before lowering its head again.
The rest of the pack barely reacted.
They were calm.
Comfortable.
Safe.
Zhao Feng stood there a moment longer than he intended.
The wolves lay together beneath the trees, bodies touching, their breathing slow and steady.
No tension.
No urgency.
Just quiet life beneath the branches.
Zhao Feng watched them in silence.
Something about the sight held his attention.
Lingxi nudged his cheek.
*Papa?*
Zhao Feng blinked then smiled at her.
"…Nothing."
They continued walking.
The primate enclosure appeared next.
Several rhesus macaques were still awake, climbing slowly across the ropes and wooden platforms inside their habitat.
One macaque suddenly noticed Lingxi.
It froze.
Then it shrieked loudly and scrambled up the structure.
The rest of the monkeys erupted into motion, chattering and climbing to higher platforms.
Lingxi jerked back in surprise.
*Papa!*
Zhao Feng laughed softly.
"They're startled."
Lingxi frowned.
*…Lingxi scary?*
"Maybe." he answered, amused.
Lingxi shook her head adamantly.
*Lingxi nice.*
"I know." he responded with a chuckle.
One macaque tilted its head, studying Lingxi for a moment before plucking a leaf and tossing it down.
The leaf fluttered slowly through the air.
Lingxi's eyes followed it immediately.
Her head tilted as the leaf landed near Zhao Feng's foot.
Curious, she slid a little down his shoulder and stretched her neck toward it, touching the leaf gently with her nose.
The leaf skittered lightly across the stone.
Lingxi blinked.
*…soft.*
Zhao Feng smiled.
'Curious little one.'
Lingxi sniffed it again, then climbed back up to her usual spot across Zhao Feng's shoulders.
They walked on.
The herbivore area was calmer.
Several sika deer stood quietly within the grass enclosure, illuminated by the pathway lights.
One deer lifted its head as Zhao Feng approached.
Lingxi leaned forward again.
*…pretty.*
Zhao Feng nodded.
The deer watched them calmly before returning to grazing.
Lingxi rested her chin lightly on Zhao Feng's shoulder.
For a while neither of them spoke.
They simply walked.
Wind moved gently through the leaves.
The zoo breathed quietly around them.
Zhao Feng's gaze moved slowly across the enclosures.
Fences.
Barriers.
Boundaries.
For a brief moment, another memory surfaced.
Cold concrete.
Metal railings.
Observation windows above a training yard.
Children running drills under harsh floodlights while instructors shouted commands.
Faster.
Again.
Again.
Zhao Feng blinked.
The memory dissolved.
He looked back at the deer.
They grazed peacefully, unconcerned with the fence around them.
Lingxi suddenly nudged his cheek.
*Papa.*
Zhao Feng blinked and looked down.
Lingxi was watching him closely now.
Her violet eyes were no longer curious.
They were worried.
Through the bond he felt it clearly.
She had sensed the shift in his emotions.
Zhao Feng exhaled slowly.
"…I'm fine."
Lingxi studied him for another moment.
Then she gently pressed her head against his cheek again.
*Papa.*
Zhao Feng reached up and gave her head a small pat.
"It's nothing."
The unease in the bond slowly faded.
Lingxi relaxed slightly.
Then her attention suddenly shifted.
Something near the edge of the path had caught her eye.
A small metal bottle cap lay on the ground.
Lingxi leaned forward from Zhao Feng's shoulder.
Her horn tapped it lightly.
Then—
**flick**
The bottle cap vanished.
Zhao Feng stopped walking.
"…Lingxi."
She looked up immediately.
*Papa?*
Zhao Feng glanced at the empty ground.
Then back at her.
"…again…"
Lingxi blinked once.
Then she slowly lowered her head and rested it against his shoulder as if nothing had happened.
Through the bond he felt a faint ripple of quiet satisfaction.
Zhao Feng chuckled.
"You're going to fill that pouch of yours with random things, aren't you?"
Lingxi nudged his cheek again.
Her excitement was obvious.
They continued walking.
Eventually Zhao Feng stopped near a quiet clearing where several enclosures could be seen at once.
The wolves.
The deer.
The primates.
Beyond them, the silhouette of the tiger habitat.
Animals resting.
Animals breathing.
Animals living.
Zhao Feng stood there quietly.
He had never been responsible for anything before.
Not truly.
His life had only ever consisted of missions.
Targets.
Orders.
Kill.
Report.
Repeat.
That was all.
Lingxi shifted slightly on his shoulders.
Through their bond he felt her gentle curiosity.
She liked this place.
The trees.
The animals.
The night air.
Zhao Feng looked across the zoo again.
These animals lived here.
If the zoo belonged to him…
Then their lives were under his care.
The thought settled slowly.
Not heavy.
But steady.
For the first time in either of his lives, his future was his to decide.
Zhao Feng looked across the quiet zoo.
Animals resting beneath the trees.
Breathing.
Living.
Free in the small ways they understood.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"Then…"
His voice was calm, but firm.
"I'll make this place a real home for them."
He paused.
"…and for us."
Lingxi's eyes brightened.
She lifted her head proudly.
*Lingxi!*
