Chapter 96 - Iron Threshold

The rain began as a thin, chemical drizzle, hissing as it struck the glowing blue boundaries of Sector 17-B. The sky above had curdled into a heavy, bruised purple—the atmospheric byproduct of a collapsed zone core.

Arjun stood atop the freshly fabricated alloy bulkhead at the northern border, his boots locked into the anti-slip metal. The wind whipped past, carrying the sharp scent of ozone, burnt alloy, and distant diesel engines. Below him, the main four-lane highway stretched out into the gray fog of the neutral territories, a dead vein of cracked asphalt cutting through the concrete wilderness.

"They're three kilometers out," Maya's voice cut through his helmet comms, tight and strained. She was stationed two hundred meters back, elevated inside the hollowed shell of a ruined communications tower that now served as Sector 17-B's central relay node. "Sensors are tracking eight light armored vehicles, two heavy tread transports, and at least forty foot soldiers. Faction tags are confirmed: Iron Covenant, Fourth Strike Battalion."

"Who's leading them?" Arjun asked, his eyes never leaving the fog.

"System signature registers a Commander Rank 2," she replied. A tactical data packet flushed across Arjun's HUD. "Name tag: Vance. Class designation: Siege Vanguard. High kinetic resistance, heavy heavy-shielding specs. Arjun... his squad outnumbers us ten to one. Our automated turrets only have enough power for a three-minute burst before the central relay throttles them."

"Three minutes is enough," Arjun said smoothly.

Beside him on the bulkhead, Marcus finished locking a heavy anti-material rifle onto a tripod mount. The old mercenary's face was grim, deep lines etched around his eyes as he checked the magazine feed. He racked the bolt back with a sharp, heavy clack.

"I've fought Covenant deserters before," Marcus spat over the edge of the barrier. "They don't fight like zone beasts, Arjun. They don't just charge into your sightline. They use suppressive artillery, flank through subterranean lines, and crush you with raw mass. If Vance takes this ridge, he'll turn our own choke point against us."

"He won't take the ridge," Arjun said. He leaned down, placing his gloved hand on the cold steel of the bulkhead. "This grid belongs to us now. The system recognizes my authority over the terrain. In 17-B, we don't just hold the ground—we control it."

A low rumble vibrated through the metal beneath their boots.

It wasn't thunder.

Out in the fog, two blinding halogen spotlights cut through the chemical haze, followed by six more. The deep, guttural roar of modified combustion engines echoed down the ruined highway. The Iron Covenant had arrived.

The lead vehicle—a sprawling, six-wheeled armored car retrofitted with heavy angular plating and a mounted rotary cannon—grinded to a halt eight hundred meters outside the blue line. Behind it, the rest of the convoy fanned out into an assault wedge, their headlamps casting long, jagged shadows against the shattered concrete buildings lining the road.

A amplified voice boomed across the empty highway, distorted by heavy static and a mechanical vocoder.

"Commander Arjun Mehta!"

The sound rattled the loose glass in the surrounding ruins.

"You've had a busy hour," the voice sneered. "We watched your core pulse from ten miles out. Imperial work, clearing a Level 4 Guardian solo. But you're bleeding out, your suit is shattered, and your reserves are dry. Hand over the sector authorization key, step back into the neutral zone, and the Iron Covenant will grant your squad safe passage to the southern hab-blocks."

Marcus glanced at Arjun, his finger resting lightly on his trigger. "That's Vance."

Arjun didn't activate his external speakers. He simply raised his right hand and brought up the sector control interface. A translucent blue holographic map of the immediate three hundred meters flickered into existence before his eyes.

"Maya," Arjun spoke calmly into the internal channel. "Status on the Covenant's flanks?"

"They're holding position," Maya reported, her voice fast. "They think you're going to negotiate. Their foot infantry is starting to disembark from the rear transports—stepping down onto the highway."

"Good," Arjun muttered.

He didn't yell a response to Vance. He didn't offer a dramatic speech.

He closed his fist over the holographic map.

[Command Executed: Sector Hazard Activation — Structural Collapse]

Two hundred meters in front of the Iron Covenant's lead vehicle, the highway didn't just break—it folded.

Because Sector 17-B was now under Arjun's explicit system command, the structural integrity of the damaged roads fell under his control. The lingering instability from the Core Guardian's death implosion had left massive sub-surface energy pockets buried beneath the asphalt. Arjun didn't build a wall; he released the lock on the ground.

With a deafening CRACK, a fifty-foot section of the highway imploded inward.

The lead armored vehicle pitched violently forward, its front axle dropping into a cavernous, glowing fissure of raw residual energy. The secondary troop transport swerved sharply to avoid the pit, slamming broadside into the concrete median with a sickening crunch of tearing steel.

Panic erupted over the Covenant's open frequencies.

"Ambush! It's a seismic trap!"

"Open fire! Target the bulkhead! Target the bulkhead!"

"Fire!" Arjun barked.

Marcus pulled the trigger on his anti-material rifle. The heavy weapon roared, a massive 20mm tungsten round tearing down the length of the highway and punching straight through the engine block of a Covenant scout car, detonating its fuel cell in a brilliant orange fireball.

At the same time, the two automated turrets mounted atop the bulkhead spun to life, their twin barrels whirring into a high-pitched scream as they unleashed a wall of blue plasma fire into the dismounted infantry below.

"Return fire!" Vance's voice echoed over the roar of battle, now stripped of its smug composure.

From the center of the Covenant line, a massive shape rose from the rear of the heaviest transport. A man standing nearly seven feet tall, encased in thick, dark-iron power armor, stepped down onto the burning tarmac. A shimmering, semi-transparent kinetic tower shield was locked to his left arm, deflecting automated plasma fire into the night sky with loud, resonant pings.

In his right hand, he carried a heavy rocket mortar.

[Target Identified: Commander Vance]

[Threat Level: High]

[Class: Siege Vanguard (Level 28)]

Vance leveled the mortar directly at Arjun's bulkhead. "You want to play for land, kid?! Let's see your dirt hold up to this!"

THUMP.

A red streak tore through the darkness, screaming toward the barrier.

"Arjun, move!" Marcus yelled, diving off the rear platform.

Arjun didn't retreat. He pushed his worn legs to their absolute limit, activating his short-range thrusters.

[Speed Boost: Active]

He launched himself off the top of the wall just as the rocket impacted. The explosion rocked Sector 17-B, blowing a ten-foot notch out of the alloy barrier and throwing up a blinding curtain of smoke and shrapnel.

Arjun hit the asphalt below in a three-point slide, his suit groaning under the kinetic shock.

[Warning: Structural failure imminent]

He rose out of the dust, clearing the smoke in a dead sprint toward the burning highway. His plasma rifle was raised, his eyes cold and unblinking behind his cracked visor.

Vance was pushing through the burning wreckage of his own vehicles, his kinetic shield glowing bright yellow as it absorbed stray fire. He caught sight of Arjun charging him alone through the fire and ruin.

"You fool!" Vance roared, raising his heavy warhammer as his kinetic shield flared to maximum output. "You're a dead man walking!"

Arjun didn't slow down. He locked his sightline onto the small glowing core at the center of Vance's shield generator.

"I survived the Guardian," Arjun whispered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You're just a man in a metal suit."

The plasma rifle hummed to life, charging to maximum overload.
